Specter is not going to do anything except bluster.
Posted by T2 at July 24, 2007 09:46 AMI’ll believe it when I see it. Spector is always blabbering about bringing “liberty and justice for all.” But he usually manages to slither his way out like the slimy, spineless slug he truly is.
Posted by redneckrepub at July 24, 2007 09:52 AMSpector is the deflector. His job is to delay and bait and switch.
The sound of one Senator backpedalling tomorrow will be louder than the whole TdF peloton
In his head Specter's watching a production of Hamlet where himself, playing Polonius, is the actual star.
Besides, one more dead horse's head in Specter's bed, and he'll have the whole set.
Until he finishes the collection, though, nothing's going to happen.
Posted by Davis X. Machina at July 24, 2007 10:03 AMSpecter has made an ass of himself countless times. One just waits for actions, words mean nothing from this committee anymore.
Posted by paradox at July 24, 2007 10:14 AMSports, literature and Hollywood celluloid references all in one comment!
Bravo!
Posted by snark at July 24, 2007 10:15 AMFace it!!!! It is past time for impeachment hearings. Either we are going to have a republic that is based on the rule of law or we are willing to live with a dictatorship. Where is the outrage. Don't blame Democrats. Blame the people. How many people on this site are willing to demand impeachment of cheney and bush?
This may not be the right site to discuss this issue.
If enough people think it is right to do, how should we proceed?
Posted by smooth at July 24, 2007 10:35 AMCan anyone here explain Joe Lieberman to me?
I know the man is unconscionable, but why?
Posted by Jill Bains at July 24, 2007 10:40 AMThere should be a special word in the dictionary for specter which means "lobotomized conscience"
Posted by anonymous at July 24, 2007 10:43 AMparadox is right, forget any promises from Specter. But Leahy could push for an SP. That'd be nice. Gonzo's really having some fun, too. Apparently he tried to say that Congress sent he and Card to get Ashcroft to sign off on the wiretapping! The balls! When that didn't work, he says there are no rules governing the delegation of authority. I suppose in Bizzaro world there aren't.
Posted by iamcoyote at July 24, 2007 10:53 AMAnd it looks like Abu G has confirmed that there are other domestic spying programs as well when trying to defend his hospital visit:
The disagreement that occurred was about other intelligence activities and the reason for the visit to the hospital was about other intelligence activities. It was not about the terrorist surveillance program that the president announced to the american people.
Whaddaya know? We were right.
Posted by iamcoyote at July 24, 2007 11:16 AMThe disagreement that occurred was about other intelligence activities and the reason for the visit to the hospital was about other intelligence activities. It was not about the terrorist surveillance program that the president announced to the american people.
And then after he said that, Specter said something like "you expect us to believe that?" But I believe it. When Comey testified, the Senators kept referring to the domestic spy program (or terrorist surveillance program) and Comey kept saying that he couldn't specify what program it was because it was classified. I always thought he was talking about a different one.
Posted by CG at July 24, 2007 11:56 AMCG - it sure sounded like the bushies were carefully parsing their answers about "this program" when the spying first broke. Lots of bloggers picked up on it back then; it's good to have it confirmed and to see the Huge headline on Huffpo. That ought to drive the nutbars bonkers!
Posted by iamcoyote at July 24, 2007 12:32 PMJust watched a little more...Apparently Gonzalez said in previous testimony that there was no disagreement over the domestic spying program, then in a press conference he said that Comey was talking about the domestic spying program. But Gonzalez says he misspoke at the press conference and cleared it up with the reporter 2 days later (but he didn't personally clear it up, a spokesperson did, and he doesn't know what the spokesperson said, but what he meant to say was that Comey was talking about a different program.) Now the senators seem very sure that Comey was taking about the domestic spying program, not some other program, so I'd be interested to see that testimony again and see if that was clear.
Gonzales also gave a bunch of BS answers about the infamous hospital visit (which will forever be in my head as the Daily Show spoof of a Spanish soap opera--that was hilarious). He said he just wanted to let Ashcroft know that the "gang of 8" wanted the program to continue. And as soon as Ashcroft said it wasn't for him to decide, they thanked him and left. And they had no intention of trying to get him to sign anything, and even if he had handed over authority to Comey, there are "no rules" about taking it back. He could have taken back power whenever he wanted (really??).
Posted by CG at July 24, 2007 01:20 PMCan anyone here explain Joe Lieberman to me?
I know the man is unconscionable, but why?
He is owned by the Israeli lobby but more importantly he owes KKKarl Rove and the bu$h cabal for his success in Conn.
Loserman had to get on his knees and pay homage to keep his ego intact. For that he would have sacrificed his mother's soul.
Talk about looking into the heart of darkness.
SPECTRE (SPecial Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion) is a terrorist organisation featured in the British James Bond novels by Ian Fleming, the films based on those novels, and James Bond video games.
Posted by TIKI AL at July 24, 2007 01:41 PMOh hum, I've heard this song before. Borrrrrrring.
Posted by Judith at July 24, 2007 02:26 PMGeneric Senator: "This lying by the AG is extremely bad. If only there were something we could do about it! Too bad we're only US senators....if only we had some power!"
This program, that program, here's a spying program, there's a spying program....the senate looks like a pack of fools and chumps and they couldn't care less. Since Abu won't tell them what the hell spying program he is even talking about, impeach him.
The main point of Comey's testimony was that he as acting AG refused to certify SOME domestic spying program as legal and that Cheney, Abu and Bush rushed to the bedside to get it falsely and invalidly approved by a non-acting AG.
Posted by euzoius at July 24, 2007 02:38 PMSpecter wants a special prosecutor, eh? And Specter wants a pony! He has the money, all right, but he won't buy one. Someone has to give it to him.
How they can sit there and listen to Abu just lie to their faces is incredible. Third world America.
"I wanna fix this here DOJ!" Fix that DOJ, Abu! Yeah, you're The Great Fixer. You go, Abu....fix, fix, fix.
And they sit there and listen to this appalling little Bushco apparatchik yes-man and don't just denounce him as a craven, corrupt failure who is a disgrace to the nation. Feckless Fools facing a Sycophantic Stooge. Cheney is literally pissing his pants laughing.
Posted by euzoius at July 24, 2007 02:50 PMspecter just told the ranking members what to do. he can vote against it, but he knows better this time, right?
Posted by oldtree at July 24, 2007 04:00 PM"only the insane still listen to Joe."
You mean, like, the 25% who still think POTUS is doing a decen t job? Or, do you mean just POTUS, himself?
If Specter is serious (and there is significant doubt about that), what is driving it? Is it really because Specter wants to see Truth and Justice prevail, or does he have another agenda where he is pushing back against BushCo?
Posted by Frank at July 24, 2007 04:49 PMThanks Seven of Six,
With Lieberman the Israeli connection is all I need to know to get a grip on his over the top rabidity.
He shamelessly, willfully insults himself over and over again, where he has even become an imitation of himself-almost an unreal personae-one of the undead. He has given bottom feeding itself a bad name.
Posted by Jill Bains at July 24, 2007 06:04 PMThe pic of Abu Gonzales that goes with this post is priceless. "Who, me?"
Posted by Julie at July 24, 2007 08:11 PMSpector the deflector. That has a true ring to it Nobody.
Posted by Judith at July 25, 2007 03:37 AMOne would have to have been living in the desert without outside communications to not know about Liebertraitor. Sheesh
Posted by Judith at July 25, 2007 03:43 AMGonzo's telling the story about the night visit to the hospital was priceless.
