Comments: It's contempt, all right!

Right on, baby!

Posted by Mister Go at July 25, 2007 01:01 PM

There's even talk of a Special Prosecutor to investigate Gonzo's lies to the Senate Judiciary Committee vis a vis the US attorneys firings. It's so very wonderful watching the wheels come off this White House but I am anxious to see Bush and Cheney fly off into the sunset. I get physically sick anytime I hear Bush's West Texas drawl or see Cheney's Jabba the Hutt-like mug.

Oh, Dick-head is rather cute, you know, like a dead giant squid...

O/T

The House banned permanent bases in Iraq!

Wooohooo!

the %^&%^&#% AG getting out of congress today without chains is unbelievable. Why didn't they arrest him and jail him immediately for contempt and perjury? They have the power, and ignored it?

These weak and pathetic SFB's have no more respect. Most are acting like republicans now, so what difference does it make?

and Murtha, another toothless spew from someone that votes with the president.

it is a bad teevee show folks. meant to distract. move along

Actually, I liked the Rude One's suggestions for Gonzo better, making him run through DC naked while people slapped him on the ass and laughed at his tiny little member.

Now THAT'S humiliation.

Posted by merciless at July 25, 2007 02:05 PM

And after they get done with that, they should cancel the August recess, or stagger it so that one branch is there all the time so Bush can't make any recess appointments.

Posted by Duckman GR at July 25, 2007 02:41 PM

Good idea, Duckman!

Posted by tempus at July 25, 2007 03:02 PM

I think Harry Reid considered that at one time. Sort of a Caretaker Congress. I agree, don't recess.

One comment though, this administration will never be shamed. They do not have the capacity.

Posted by via at July 25, 2007 03:05 PM

Sorry - but I think the damage they have done is pretty well complete now. We are in a dictatorship. NOTHING WILL HAPPEN TO HOLD ANYONE RESPONSIBLE. time to wake up to this fact.

Posted by jj at July 25, 2007 03:05 PM

via, I agree about this admin not feeling shame, I believe that's what we've learned from them - if you don't feel shame, you can do whatever you want, and run away with the money. The shocking thing is that the only thing preventing others from doing what they've done has been shame; and if we get through this with our country intact, we need to push for real roadblocks to this ever happening again.

I think one point the Rude One (we're not worthy!) is making is that these criminals need to be put in a position that the only way out is to show that they should be ashamed, and when they don't show the remorse and go through the humiliation of it (as Bill Clinton did), it will be obvious to everyone that they have no shame and the public will be disgusted with them and their followers and the GOP will be Mudd for a generation.

Posted by iamcoyote at July 25, 2007 04:48 PM

Oh, and I totally agree, NO RECESS! We've learned that Bushco can't be trusted with one anymore.

Posted by iamcoyote at July 25, 2007 04:49 PM

That's funny, I was just reading The Rude One before I came here.

Erin is right, it's some of his most brilliant work, don't miss it.

Damn! jj sees his "conservative" dictatorship dreams possibly ending. Must be tough. No doubt, he looks at the pretzledent's ass -as all republi-con males do- and can't bear the thought of that man not being in charge. It's a repressed republi-con gay thing.

As for the contempt charges, riiiiggghhhhttt. I'll keep my powder dry on this one, and clap for Tikerbell at a later date. I've seen the Democrats sieze defeat from the jaws of victory far too many times to take any news of this sort as an indicator of the outcome from their words.

You've had Abu openly lying on many occaisions. What's come of it? Nothing. What has come from the myriad investigation? Not much. What of the 1st 100 hours? Minimum wage attached to the death merchants bill. Need prescription drug reform? Too bad because Democrats nailed it to the cross to get some buck$ from big phrma.

That is the one thing this Democrat Congress has done very well. Sold you out to the highest bidder. There will be no clapping for Tinkerbell, and certainly no ATTABOYS" from my direction, until the Democrats perform. Their words and this vote for contempt are meaningless at this point.

A singular event in American history, where the legislative branch will direct the executive branch -- in the form of the federal prosecutor -- to file contempt charges against itself. The Department of Justice reminded Congress that administrations of both parties have long held that Congress has no power to issue contempt citations for claims of executive privilege. Obviously, the current leadership in Congress doesn't care.

It portends a showdown in the Supreme Court over the nature of executive privilege, and Sensenbrenner is correct. Absent any evidence of criminal conduct, the Supreme Court is highly unlikely to grant the legislative branch free rein to pursue contempt charges or to undo executive privilege. Nancy Pelosi will in all likelihood force a ruling that will firmly establish executive privilege and leave Congress with less power than it has had, after having finally called its own bluff.

If the main body of Congress is foolish enough to endorse this course of action, then it will set the stage for its diminishment. Up to now, smarter leadership in the Legislature has carefully wielded the threat of contempt to compel greater cooperation on matters of national interest. In one action in a situation that amounts to little more than a sideshow for a nation at war, the Democrats will throw that leverage away on the inhospitable shores of the Supreme Court in a case where they cannot even demonstrate any criminality.

That may sound great for the Republicans at the moment -- but only as long as the Executive branch remains in the hands of the GOP. I'd prefer the historical tension and the traditional give-and-take to what will shortly follow.

Is Nancy Pelosi and Dick Cheney involved together in this trying to establish a stronger executive branch? Maybe she's fixing the rules for the next Democratic administration. Whenever that will be?

The rude one forgot to mention camera angles that accentuate the eye makeup like Tammy Faye Bakker Messner's tatooed-on eye shadow and whatever.

Posted by Rich at July 25, 2007 09:16 PM

Hey Phid, Seems we're sorta pushing the same thing. Ethics reform and Earmark reform, these two seem to be getting just a lot happy noise with no action. Maybe we could get better politics if those two issues were addressed.

Posted by peter at July 25, 2007 09:26 PM

i'll be very interested to see how this plays out.

i am not particularly optimistic about the democratic forces in the society being able to outmaneuver the rightwingers on this or most issues, as the executive branch plays hardball quite well, congress is still too divided and weak and the courts have swung to the right.

i do however think that congress should fairly soon jump to the quick and start with impeachment hearings, first again Abu G and then cheney and then bush. go for all the gusto!!

Posted by michael72 at July 25, 2007 10:42 PM

August is always a hateful month. Don't think Bush won't piss around and make recess this and recess that. HE ALWAYS DOES! And he'll get away with it! HE 'ALWAYS DOES! Wake up to the fact indeed!

Some of y'all LC'rs are SO gullible!

Mal, I have just become too jaded.

Note that the p troll repeats the gopper talking points. It continues to amaze me the brainwashing job the Atwater inspired movement has carried out, even after the guru renounced it on his deathbed.

They've threatened and threatened and threatened to no avail waiting for greater, fuck, any, cooperation. It ain't happening.

This part of the gopper thug logic, that they will force a ruling that will firmly establish executive privilege is the weak link in their circular reasoning. How? Explain the mechanism.

All they can rule is that in this case there are no grounds due to lack of evidence. But that only addresses the lack, not the denial. So all they will do is cement the fact that lacking evidence they cannot make a ruling one way or the other. Even Kennedy won't go along with an interpretation that lack of evidence is equal to executive privilege.
