Well, the Republican Party in Westchester County New York is heading for life support as well. District Attorney Janet DiFiore just switched her party affiliation from Republican to Democrat. Taking the office out of Republican hands for the first time in over a century. This follows on the heals of a Republican State Assemblyman from Yonkers switching earlier in the year. DiFiore called the decision a deeply personal one that would not afffect the way she approaches her job as DA. Republican strategists credited the 'rightward shift of the Westchester GOP on social issues' as the likely cause for her move. But demographics in Westchester have been swinging away from the GOP, which has traditionally dominated the county, and towards the Democratic party which now holds a significant lead in voter registrations county wide.

after his formidable Republican opponent ran into a wife-swapping controversy
Was this Jack Ryan? What an idiot. It's not enough he was married to the stunning Jeri Ryan (from some Star Trek show), but he wanted to go the extra mile and have sex with her in front of other people at some adult clubs, as I recall.
Posted by MaskedVigilante at August 17, 2007 09:13 AMhave sex with her in front of other people at some adult clubs,
Ahhhh! The neo-con utopia.
Well, the Republican Party in Westchester County New York is heading for life support as well.
Poor republi-cons! And they have always done so well for Merca! I mean, just look at their record of stunning accomplishments.

Oh, plllluuuueeez. Surely the gang that can't shoot straight have at least been paying attention on how the Dems and the general political establishment have marginalized Dennis Kucinich. Plus, there's always the examples of Perot, Nader, Steve Forbes, Alan Keyes in previous years, Badnarik, John Anderson, Pat Buchanan, John Hagelin, and god knows who else to draw from. The old style version of outing the other marginal candidates from the race is a century-old tradition.
Anyway. I feel bad for Jeri Ryan. I didn't used to considering she was perfectly willing to degrade herself on Voyager, but her husband was a piece of work.

Posted by tempus at August 17, 2007 10:02 AMstunning accomplishments! so many to choose from and the latest is a major victory: completely blowing off the results of the Iraq Elections and re-forming the government of Iraq into a Shiite/Kurd, you take your half and we'll take ours and screw the Sunni's out of any of it totally, Democracy. And we'll give George his Oil Authorization to Pump just in time for Betraeus to read his script: "The Surge has allowed Democracy in Iraq to flourish and we need six more months to kill all the Sunni".
Posted by T2 at August 17, 2007 10:07 AMI wonder about the impact of the 2010 and 2020 reapportioning will be? How many EV's will be left in these 'blue' states. Democrats seem to crafting an election strategy avoiding the south or fly over country. Wonder where they are going to get their votes then? I'm seeing a lot of Illinois tags around my city the last few years. Democrats must be making life there very unpleasant and driving as many people as can leave away. That's ok, we take all comers. We'll add more and more seats and more influence in the Congress because of Democrats influence elsewhere. 2006 was way too early to stake out a trend, more of a one off.
It will be so nice to hear y'all on some Wednesday morning in November of 2008, lament about what could have been. And to see President Bush hand over the Presidency on January 20th of 2009 to Rudi Giuliani. To see President Giuliani walking up Pennsylvania Avenue on his way to the White House.
It seems Obama is having his effect on HC. What a nice Republicrat he is helping another Republicrat win your nomination.

Someone's not been paying attention.

Probably shopping the fire sales at the misrun republi-con businesses.
And to see President Bush hand over the Presidency on January 20th of 2009 to Rudi Giuliani.
Could be. And then we will see much more of his stuff. You guys have been great for Merca, as long as your definiton of "great" isn't too strenuous.

I bet the Inaugural Drag Ball will be a hot ticket!
Posted by snark at August 17, 2007 10:47 AMThe best place in Chicago to hear wingnuts go into fits over politics is the rant & rave section of craigslist. I think all five Cook County Republicans must post there obsessively.
Ever since George Ryan's disgraceful exit from the Governor's Mansion, it's been relatively pleasant to be a Dem in Illinois.
Posted by ann at August 17, 2007 10:51 AMPerhaps Henry Cuellar should be shaking in his boots. The only thing that grew from 2006 was the ranks of moderate Democrats despite the attacks from liberal groups. Moderate Democrats gave you the majority. Without them you'd be nowhere and those at Kos know it. He now "commands" moderates to be controlled, subservient to the liberal branch of the party. Democrats that would be part of the DLC had the liberals not attacked it so much.
I remember that old Lyndon Johnson line: "You know the difference between cannibals and liberals? Cannibals only eat their enemies."
Posted by peter at August 17, 2007 12:06 PMI am really out of it, but I keep reading innuendos about Rudy and drag queens. What is the story?????
"To see President Giuliani walking up Pennsylvania Avenue on his way to the White House."
Peter, you mean goosestepping up Pennesylvania.
Judith,
Do a Google image search for "Rudy, drag".
It will all be clear then.
Posted by snark at August 17, 2007 12:17 PMJust make sure you have something handy to blot the memory out with afterwards.

peter, I had this discussion at an AZ Democratic Party gathering here in Phoenix. I asked the Vice Chairman personally, why Progressive Dems should donate when we are not included in (moderate) Democratic Party policy. He begged us for our support and money, saying, "You have to realize we are in this fight together". To a point he's correct.
You know what, his answers weren't good enough. Not enough Progressive responses. So I promptly went over to Progressive Democratic table and laid down a 20 spot. He kind of looked stunned. Made him understand, he needs us just as much, if not more.
You have to understand peter, Progressives finally have a strategy: We will do what we can, where we can, to effect change. That is how the money will flow. Not just to moderate Dems.
Don't say nothing peter, but we plan to pick off RINO's with moderate Dems. And DINO's with Progressives when we can.
Turn this country around for the better, finally!!
It's not too late, you can still join us.
