Jay is a nice enough fellow, but as I've long advocated, utterly unsuited for his job. He's not smart enough, tough enough, or ruthless enough for that job, and he should step aside as chairman for the good of the country. he has not done one thing in 7 years that would warrant him being the chair or the minority ranking member of the Intelligence Committee.
And I don't think he's a bad Democrat and evil etc etc, just that he isn't the guy forthe job and he should be replaced in a non punitive way.

Posted by bartcopfan at August 23, 2007 01:43 PMI'll take a crack at my own question: Feingold or Wyden?
Posted by bartcopfan at August 23, 2007 01:46 PMAre they going to spy on Warner now that he wants some troops home by Xmas?
OK GOP elephants, start the election circus parade: trunk to tail, trunk to tail, don't step in the pachyderm pies.
Reyes has turned out to be a real dummy.

Yeah, I blew it on that call. Silvestre Reyes is a bonehead.

Would Harmon have been better? Still too secretive.
Besides Pelosi wouldn't allow it.

Harman would not have been better; she caved to Bush already on warrantless surveillance.
That Pelosi put a cipher like Reyes in charge of that committee does not speak well of her; when you think about it, it was a sign of the FISA capitulation to come.
Hey, let's not be unfair to Jay, though. After all, if he gets really pissed off, he might write Cheneyt a private, personal note!
Posted by lambert strether at August 23, 2007 03:04 PMJay saw the same things Dick Durbin did in the lead up to the war with Iraq. Sen. Durbin says he saw something and voted against it as did 4 other Dems on that committee. Jay voted for it as did 3 other Dems. Sen. Durbin said he would have loved to make public what he saw but was duty bound not do, duty bound or sworn not to reveal. Jay gets the Chair by his seniority, Jane doesn't for personal reasons. Jane was far better for Intel Chair than this Reyes fellow. Chrm Reyes didn't know which sect in Iraq would be friendly with AQI. Said it didn't make a difference.
Princess sparkle really let us down here. She's let us down elsewhere too.
Posted by peter at August 23, 2007 06:50 PMIf Silvestre Reyes and Jay Rockefeller knew anything at all......
Save it-they don't. They are members of an incompetent political party.
Posted by jj at August 23, 2007 07:24 PMWould add Whitehouse to that team to look into this. Has impressed me so far.
If you read the original Risen report in the NYT, you'll see that "official sources" say (always anonymous to give the impression that we're seeing something that the admin doesn't want us to know) that the taps were always targeted. Personally, I can't see how they couldn't have been. I think it's total bs that computers could have searched a gillion messages and come up with suspicious ones.

steve, ya gave me the best laugh of the day...
time for a real third party in the country. a party that isn't full of corporate clones i mean clowns, nincompoops, and capitulationists.
and to think all these corrupt and weak kneed politicians and media hacks and sycophants actually owe everything to the Enlightenment and Age of Reason and its ideas. who would've thought the progeny of maidson, paine and jefferson would turn out like this?
:)

God Peter, you are definitely multiple personalities.
