"We cannot replace a group of corporate Republicans with a group of corporate Democrats, just swapping the Washington insiders of one party for the Washington insiders of the other." - John Edwards, taking direct aim at AIPAC's queen
Glad to see someone dare to do it!
Posted by Christopher at August 24, 2007 03:34 AMIf Edwards keeps this up, it will percolate for about a week, and then someone like Larry King or Wolf is going to ask him: "Do you really mean that?"---and then the shit will hit the fan. The Right (and 98% of the MSM) will label him an anarchist in endless tape-reel replays.
That mush is certain.
What is not certain is how the rest of the voting public will react. I happen to think most voters are going to agree with Edwards.
Posted by gtash at August 24, 2007 03:43 AMNot only 'mush', but 'much' too.....
Posted by gtash at August 24, 2007 03:45 AMI thought you said it right the first time, gtash.
Sen. Warner, papa bear, daddy, the adult in the room, has come out calling for some withdrawal by Christmas. I wonder how many baby bears are going to join him. Princess sparkle has already seconded the motion, here, here.
Posted by peter at August 24, 2007 04:11 AMIt's a riot reading how outraged Hillary's Harpies got at Edwards for leveling a salvo at her. How dare Edwards? Who does he think he is taking on the front runner? After all, Le Hill's got K-Street, the DLC, the DNC, and AIPAC all sewn up and no one gets to speak to her in such a manner.
Posted by Christopher at August 24, 2007 04:42 AMIf only Hillary Clinton goes down like Ed Muskie in '72 . . Hunter Thompson will be cackling like a banshee in the afterlife.
Posted by idiosynchronic at August 24, 2007 05:26 AMAfter Hillary is elected president, I'm sure she'll be pushing for the Iran war Cheney has wanted since at least 2000. She will be riding the first tank into Tehran, Margaret Thatcheresque, spreading freedoms and U.S. values to the Iranians like like the Shah did 30 years ago.
Posted by Christopher at August 24, 2007 05:37 AMHillary and John Warner should get it on in the Lincoln bedroom with Edwards throwing tomatoes at them while they copulate. Don't you people have anything else to do with your time than gossip about people you don't even know?
Posted by Mal Feasance at August 24, 2007 06:17 AMI was wondering about the timing of Warner's and Clinton's statements yesterday morning (afternoon)?
If Clinton was elected President, would she consider Warner for Sec of Defense if he aided her in some bu$h bashing or information sharing?
It may be a reach but I just thought it was fishy how this all came out yesterday.
Posted by Seven of Six at August 24, 2007 07:06 AMI have been typically disappointed by the traditional media coverage of Warner's statements. He may have said it's time to start pulling out troops, even "politely requesting" a Presidential statement by the staggeringly early date of September 15th, (only 9 months after the escalation began) but, as usual, the "divil" is in the details.
Our forthright, upright, ex-Marine Senator from Virginia has requested that Bush "pick any number", he helpfully provided 5,000, of US soldiers to "re-deploy" homeward, in time for Christmas. Also incidentally, in time to start covering Republic Congressional fat asses before the primaries.
My slight quibble with that is the pathetic number he timorously suggested the Kommander in Chief condescend to withdraw. 5 CHENEYING THOUSAND!?!? That's about one sixth of the full year's worth, by that time, of escalated troop numbers. I'm SO impressed! If this ancient dipshit was any more timid in daring to suggest that we bring back a meaninglessly small number of "troops" which can't possibly be sustained for that long anyway, we'd have to mop the floor under Senatorial high chair.
And yet I've spoken to people who are liberally persuaded that, "another Bush supporter has jumped ship". In a way, I sympathize with our useless leadership in Congress. They realize that nothing can overcome the relentless Corporate OWNED "Media" spin zone. Whatever happens in the real world, a rapidly faxed list of talking points will be distributed to all the SERIOUS journalists to immediately distort, exaggerate and destroy pesky little things like facts or (UGH!) NEVER-TO-BE-SUFFICIENTLY-IGNORED context! You know, all that old fashioned, Fourth Estate crap. Thank all the Gods and Goddesses we've moved past that old idea.
Posted by DeminNewJ at August 24, 2007 07:09 AMNow we know why Gen. Peter Pace is being replaced! He's recommending a drawdown of troops.
As the rallying cry from the neo-cons is "War with Iran" and "More Troops, were so close to victory in Iraq"!
Amazes me how common sense escapes the "cons"!
Seems Time Magazine has blown Mr. Giuliani's
tough talk on terrorism, his platform for being elected President.

Posted by Judith at August 24, 2007 07:23 AMSeven, I'd say you're stretching it a little. Gen. Pace said that keeping well in excess of 100,000 troops in Iraq through 2008 will severely strain the military. Bringing back the surged(5 brigades) forces by next spring and some sort of normal draw down should be able to get in that neighborhood anyway. If the current surge is indeed working, I would expect being in a position to reduce the numbers there. SecDef Gates didn't want to put Pace through the senate again.
Either way, if the surge is happening right, a reduction in troops should follow. I'd like to see our president welcome each brigade home to honor their service to our country.
As you could see by my initial reaction, Sen. Warner's announcement was lacking a whole lot of importance. Pick any number, say 5,000, say what. That I'll show them. Yeah, right.
Posted by peter at August 24, 2007 07:47 AMThought I'd share the new Russ video.
Made me smile more than anything in a very long while.
Posted by Anjha at August 24, 2007 09:03 AMThere's a huge hole at the center of our universe.
Ahhhh! The asshole of the universe! I was wondering when they would find it. They should call it "The Cheney Hole"!
It's a riot reading how outraged Hillary's Harpies got at Edwards for leveling a salvo at her.
Shhhhh! The Hill-bots only tolerate lockstep agreement in support of The Hillary. But their comments about Edwards do sting in a Lord of the Rings fashion:
Demo-gollums - "Edwards betrayed us. Wicked. Tricksy, False. We ought to wring his filthy little neck. Kill him! Kill him! And then we take the precious... and we be the master!"
Posted by phidipides using the cloak of invisibility so the Hill-bots can't see him at August 24, 2007 09:32 AMI see you Phid, come out from under the tree....
Very good. Now lets talk. The site of the undisclosed location.
Great piece ;-)
Posted by peter at August 24, 2007 09:37 AM"Hill-bots" is the term I've been using, but must say that I like "Hillary's Harpies" as well. Or maybe Hill-Harps.
My first thought about that huge black hole was that someone was looking at Bush's brain.
