Another major plus to ending our illegal criminal occupation of Iraq: with the addition of the vast reserves of Iraqi oil pumped onto the world markets, the price of gasoline in the US will probably fall to below $2/gallon.
Of course, the American oil companies and the Bush crime family don’t want to see American drivers being able to buy gasoline at $1.98/gallon…
Posted by james k. sayre at August 31, 2007 01:44 PMWatching the Democratic leadership determinedly squandering the mandate for change the voters gave them in November I am forcibly reminded of Will Rogers:
I am not a member of any organized political party. I am a Democrat.
As you said, Will. Exactly as you said.
Posted by clio at August 31, 2007 02:03 PMJames k. , remember Bush told us the entire Iraq War would be paid for with funds from Iraq Oil. But nobody ever seems to bring that lie up anymore do they? We pay $2.75 a gal while spending 5 Bil a week blowing up religious shrines. We could have built several brand new refineries with the money Bush has spent, with bi-partisan Congressional approval, in Iraq.
Posted by T2 at August 31, 2007 02:04 PMNir Rosen points out that Iraq is more than lost at this point. The country no longer exists. It is rather a collection of nation states run by various militias. The US army is simply another militia. The Kagans et al. may posture to their hearts' content, but this fiasco is oooovvvvvaaaaa! Let's just hope we can get our folks out via the only route available now that the British have left Basra.
Posted by nlacey at August 31, 2007 02:15 PMIraq hasn't been more that a free-for-all war zone for 3 years. All anyone has to do is turn on the TV and watch the news to see the reality over there. If there was any, and I mean any, normal, peacefull areas to show on TV, I guarantee the GOP Owned Media would be showing them to us 24/7. But they can't. They can't find ONE peacefull, normally operating area. But the can try to feed us the Bush Line that all's going well, progress is being made. Hey, we've been there going on 5 years and with the full United States Armed Forces at his command he cannot show us one damned street that's not been blown up recently. Not ONE elementary school with fully operational sewer facility and drinking water and electricity available all day. Not ONE hospital in Baghdad that doesn't have to rely on a generator for power. Those are the things countries provide. That ain't no country.
Posted by T2 at August 31, 2007 02:40 PM"DailyKos correctly question why in hell Reid is even negotiating with the Republicans at all"
Indeed, when the other side again and again refuses to act in good faith there is no point in negotiation. It's clear that the White House agenda is to destroy the Democratic party in its entirety so why would we negotiate with them? They're at war with us and we think we can play cards with them. Rediculous.

Careful. Your enthusiasm might make people think you want the US to lose the war.
Posted by And Bagley Was A Friend of Mine at August 31, 2007 04:30 PMNo one could care less what you think about anyone's motivation, Bagley.
Iraq and "What to Do" has now moved into low comedy, as the above posters have demonstrated. It's a farce. There isn't anything there left to "influence", but we'll be jawboning about one new DC "plan" after another for the rest of Bushco's reign, all to no purpose.
No one is getting Iraq's oil anytime soon, and even Iraq's enormous reserves cannot alter the fundamental problem that we are past peak global production and now moving forever downward, with oil prices in a permanent increase.
It's up to the "Iraqis" to do something to get the occupiers out at this point, DC and its endless plans are as much a "quagmire" as Iraq now. The shi'ites still apparently approve of our sunni crackdown and so on it will go, until the shi'ites have had enough of the situation.
The Iraq logjam won't fundamentally alter until we start to withdraw, which isn't going to happen until the US ground forces actually break. Our future is one enormous disaster thanks to "conservatism".
T2, you raise a very interesting observation, and one that fits the old saying, "the obvious is the easiest to overlook." Your are quite right in that if any city in Iraq was operating anywhere near normal, it would be the poster city for Bush. There's your proof that nothing is improving anywhere.

C'mon, bag-bot. Say it. You can do it baby! You've said it many times before. "T-t-t-t..." You can do it bag-bot! "T-t-t-ray..." C'mon, you'll be a daisy if you do! "T-t-t-rayt...uh-uh...T-t-raytur."
There you go, bag-bot. You slime-wad republi-con excuse for a closeted gay Nazi. There you go. The thing you've always been you have been calling your betters for a long time. I can't wait till you cock suckers swing in the public square!
Posted by phidipides at August 31, 2007 06:01 PMDemocrats lost the Vietnam War and seem to be doing their best job at losing this one for us. I've heard it said that Democrats will have finally lost the Vietnam war if they prevail in having our troops redeploy from Iraq.
Posted by peter at August 31, 2007 10:25 PMYes, euzoius, I'm at times persuaded that the best thing to do throughout magical September is avoid the "debate" about what to do in Iraq altogether. Clearly, nothing substantial will change. The votes for change don't exist, and not just because Barack couldn't convince 16 Seante Republicans to join the Democrats in putting together 67 votes.
Posted by Meteor Blades at September 1, 2007 12:17 AM"Winning, losing", the cretinous cogs in Team Conservative actually still run their faulty neurons in this "pattern"?
Peter GOoPer clown-suit wearer lives in the fantasy universe of the semi-retarded jingoist militarist stooge who thinks that colonial wars can be "won" if only one "perseveres". What was that definition of insanity again? Any of your kids signed up to "serve" yet, peter?
Posted by euzoius at September 1, 2007 06:26 AMphidipides,
Actually, it is spelled t-r-a-i-t-o-r.
That is your lesson for the day. Now go outside...don't forget your helmet!
Posted by And Bagley Was A Friend of Mine at September 1, 2007 09:39 AMpants pissing peter, you posting from Iraq? no? then STFU
and Warner is not going to break with Bush, he has spent years helping Bush geld the Senate
Posted by gay veteran at September 1, 2007 12:02 PMgay veteran,
Did'nt you get the memo? The "chicken-hawk" argument is no longer a valid leftist talking point: after all, none of the major Democratic palyers for nomination to run for the Presidency have any military background.
By-the-way, are you really a vet or just pretending to e one on the internets? Did you know you were gay when you enlisted? Against-the-law and all-of-that.
So what sould I post....maybe....STFU!
Posted by And Bagley Was A friend Of Mine at September 1, 2007 05:46 PMAnd Bagley, wow, you are a STOOPID troll since none of the Democrats advocate Bush's policy.
btw, the military is desperate for recruits, so march on down to the recruiting center and ENLIST
or are you too busy whacking off in mommy's basement?
