I don't have a bookie, I used offshore betting. My Visa card went through fine. [grins] For some reason they only FedEx a check back. We'll see what happens.

Posted by paradox at September 8, 2007 06:18 PM

Dude, I told you, we're golden tomorrow. The Lions are one of those rare creatures in football. They can't play without a roof over their heads. And that looney bin you Oaklanders call a stadium will be rocking on Opening Day.

We'll be counting off big bills after tomorrow afternoon, don't worry. Plus, you're gonna be there.

I'm trying to contact the Hillary campaign to get her pick of the week but no luck yet. What, is she busy or something? C'mon, give me a break.

Posted by Jeff Dinelli at September 8, 2007 06:25 PM

Seahawks will totally beat the Bucs, just 'cos!

And Raiders, pah! Buncha thugs! *ducks* Hey! Cut it out...

I've always liked the Cowboys and the Lions, for nostalgic reasons, though. And because they remind me of Thanksgiving. Mmmm, punkin pie!

Posted by iamcoyote at September 8, 2007 06:29 PM

The Oakland Raiders are the answer to the question, what if Dick Cheney owned an NFL franchise?

Posted by James E. Powell at September 8, 2007 06:32 PM

Coyote, not only are you a master of all things political, you have completely nailed a winner. The Seahawks will be way too much for the Bucs, who are in a rebuilding mode. Your wisdom is awe-inspiring!

We took you away from your book to talk football? How cool! Paradox, doesn't Coyote win something for being our first commenter?

Posted by Jeff Dinelli at September 8, 2007 06:35 PM

Oops, James beat Coyote by three minutes. He wins the prize. But he seems to be sending ill-will towards the silver and black, I don't know.

Posted by Jeff Dinelli at September 8, 2007 06:38 PM

OK, maybe I'm drinking too much silver and black kool aid, Coyote beat James by 3 mins. Coyote wins.

James, are you implying that the Raiders are a poorly run operation, or that they're good at blowing stuff up, like they're going to do to the Lions tomorrow?

Posted by Jeff Dinelli at September 8, 2007 06:40 PM

Yeah so the Raiders really have been the Dick Cheney of the NFL for years, but hey they got a new coach, they actually drafted a quarterback, and they scoop Culpepper.

Daunte Culpepper is a great athlete, if anyone can pull a win out if necessary it's him. Jerry Porter is back, and as Jeff says, on opening day the Coliseum will be berserk, I'll be there, I have a Letter from California entry for it.

It's for Darcy, and other things have been done to please the gods, oh yes. I'm bringing my cooking channel mojo to the lot, my nephew will be with me, and the Raiders will not lose, not this time.

Posted by paradox at September 8, 2007 06:43 PM

not only are you a master of all things political

Boy, have I got you snowed! Heehee

Check it out, Seahawks may have a distracted QB:

The [Seattle] Seahawks quarterback and fullback gave the 43rd president a No. 43 jersey with his name on it at a $1,000-a-plate fundraiser for Rep. Dave Reichert [R] at the Hyatt.

At the time, Hasselbeck called it a thrill and said it was a win-win, this opportunity to meet the president and get out of a team meeting. But as soon as he saw the picture of the two players with Bush, Gary Wright, the team's vice president of administration, said he was concerned about negative reaction.

Maybe in really red Republican states, it would not have been a big deal. But Washington is a blue state, and deep, deep Democratic blue in King County. So objections were raised, and Hasselbeck heard them and read them. He got nasty voice mails, e-mails and text messages.

Posted by iamcoyote at September 8, 2007 06:43 PM

Coyote, this story was on Keith's show the other night, Seahawks fans were one of his top three "Worst Persons in the World" for worrying about the political affiliation of their football team's players.

I say it's valid. Their quarterback and running back love Pres Bush? That's some serious bad mojo. But I still say they beat the Bucs by two touchdowns.

What do you think Paradox will give you as a prize for being first commentor? Now I've spelled that two different ways, with an er and an or at the end. Paradox, you should've warned me about this silver and black kool aid.

What's on the menu for the tailgate party, Paradox?

Posted by Jeff Dinelli at September 8, 2007 06:49 PM

Ahhhh, I got this from the Giada on the cooking channel, you know her, the drop dead gorgeous man those be some serious...well, she's very attractive.

Italian sausage sandwhiches, SF sourdough rolls, smoky joe grilled sausages, then dijon mustard with onions'n sweet red 'n green peppers I cooked down on my coleman stove, it's got a lng tank, 20,000 btu badass burner.

My nephew drinks pepsi, which makes me puke. Juice and water for me. If more people were coming I'd cook more.

Pro ball sucks like a hooker at a republi-con meeting of the moral majority.

Posted by phidipides at September 8, 2007 06:59 PM

Yeah I said I’d register as an Independent, and no I haven’t mailed the card in yet.

Do it. It's like graduating from high school popularity elections into adulthood. You'll like the feeling.

Posted by phidipides at September 8, 2007 07:01 PM

Nope, Keith's wrong - sorry. While the guys have every right to support whomever they wish, they don't have the right as representatives of the team (and by extension, Seattle itself) to choose sides. If they'd given him a person gift, fine. But a team jersey is team representation. That's wrong in my book.

Posted by iamcoyote at September 8, 2007 07:02 PM

Pdip, it doesn't suck as much as the Michigan Wolverines, whom I'm partial to, so I'm grateful for the distraction.

C'mon, make a pick for tomorrow, I swear I won't make fun of you come Monday.

Posted by Jeff Dinelli at September 8, 2007 07:03 PM

I agree, Coyote, that f*cker's gonna be walking around with a Seahawks jersey on at the ranch. Or maybe Laura will make him wear it while they're....ugh, never mind.

Posted by Jeff Dinelli at September 8, 2007 07:07 PM

Pro ball sucks like a hooker at a republi-con meeting of the moral majority.

So you like it then?

Anyhow, what's wrong with the Wolverines?

Posted by iamcoyote at September 8, 2007 07:10 PM

Um, first the Wolverines lost last week to a Division 1-AA school, a school that's like 1/4 size of UM. Then today they got smoked by the Oregon Ducks, giving up the 2nd most yards in Michigan school history. I don't even remember the final score, it was embarassing.

That's why I'm so excited about tomorrow night watching Tony Romo and the Cowboys.

I wonder where Hillary's pick of the week is? Shouldn't she be sitting around monitoring the Left Coaster on a Saturday night?

Posted by Jeff Dinelli at September 8, 2007 07:27 PM

fuck football.

my personal opinion for myself. that said, youse crazy nuts who enjoy it – well, enjoy!

Posted by Sharkbabe at September 8, 2007 07:46 PM

So you like it then?

Dag nabit! (mumble, mumble, mumble)

Anyhow, what's wrong with the Wolverines?

Ain't much wrong with college ball.

Interesting, eh! I'm waiting for the Sooners to get aholt of more than a high school girls softball team so I can see how Bradford is going to do this season. I've gotta wait until after Utah!

Shouldn't she be sitting around monitoring the Left Coaster on a Saturday night?

She does. Rumor is she goes by the nom de plume of "CorpContributions1". You know, like peter goes by "Widestance".

Posted by phidipides at September 8, 2007 07:50 PM

Thank you for your concise and to the point comment, sharkbabe.

And pdip, your love for Hillary will surface someday, I just know it. I'm a really patient guy.

Oklahoma desTROYED Miami today. Are they scary good again? There's certainly no competition in the conference, is there? You may be waiting for the clash with USC at the end for a real ballgame.

Posted by Jeff Dinelli at September 8, 2007 08:04 PM

As a libertarian, I'm way too busy fucking and doing drugs to keep up with football.

But I will give props to Paradox for invoking Giada De Laurentiis.

Ah, ragazza bella. One day, il mio amore, I will accompany you on those weekend getaways that your toolbox husband never shows up for.

Anyway, where was I? Oh, I'm tempted to say fuck the Seahawks, but isn't giving the president a jersey something you just do? He's probably got a room full of that swag.

Oh well. Carry on, men.

Posted by MaskedVigilante at September 8, 2007 08:11 PM

Um, first the Wolverines lost last week to a Division 1-AA school...

Appalachian St.

I don't even remember the final score...

Oregon St. 39 Michigan 7

A couple of Raider fans?
I like the Raiders. I grew up on the San Jose, Campbell and Saratoga borders rooting for them during the Lamonica and Stabler days. After Hawaii, I moved to the Central Coast town of Santa Maria and rooted for them while they were in LA.
As far as beating Detroit, I'm not so certain. They still don't have an offensive line to protect whoever starts at quaterback. Did they decide on Culpepper?
Somethings fishy about them not signing JeMarcus Russell, Davis is a known hard bargainer but this is the franchise. He needed to have been in camp.

I think the lock game will be the Seahawks over Tampa.

Upset special (or at least covering the spread) will be Arizona over San Francisco. Arizona owned the Niner's last year and we have their old defensive coach on our team this year.

Posted by Seven of Six at September 8, 2007 09:17 PM

Oh yeah, I'm ready for some football!

Posted by Seven of Six at September 8, 2007 09:19 PM

The most delightful and snarky comments I've read in a long time! Good work, boys!

Posted by ggb at September 8, 2007 09:21 PM

Check out Kos having there football thread hours after ours! He, he!

Posted by Seven of Six at September 8, 2007 09:32 PM

I'll go with Jeff and the Cowboys.

I saw that Seahawk story, thought it was foolish to protest a players personal politics. His brother supports Bush too and he's with the Jets. And Jeff there's always good old Hall of Fame number's 12 and 8(OK next year) for the Cowboys, they support Bush. Many more NFL past and current players support this president. It's what they do on the field that matters. Watching Tony do his thing after mentoring sessions with 8 and 12 should have a positive result.

Cowboy's with an 11 and 5 record or better.

Posted by peter at September 8, 2007 09:39 PM

Not a big fan of the Cowboys. I figure they'll win the division with Philly getting a wild card.
"The Tuna" left the Cowboys stacked with depth. Let's hope Wade doesn't screw it up. Wade is one of those coaches who has always been a great assistant but a mediocre head coach.
Can Romo rebound from his fumble? I hope that doesn't stick in his head...well, maybe just a little.

Posted by Seven of Six at September 8, 2007 10:02 PM

Oregon St. 39 Michigan 7

My bad, Oregon 39 Michigan 7

Posted by Seven of Six at September 8, 2007 10:51 PM

Are they scary good again?

They are always scary good. They just suck on occasion. Bradford seems to be hot, and they are deep again in all positions, even Q-back. And of course, we are still doing receivers in practice with a tennis ball gun (run the pattern and you get tennis balls fired at you).

This may be the year for another championship. If Heupel can translate his ability to read a defense we may have a real chance with this quarterback. God, the early season reeks though. We still have Utah, Tulsa and Colorado to go before we get something worth playing.

I've had some of these guys in classes I've taught. I assure you that Stoops does not tolerate fucking around. These are giant sweet boys, and he keeps them in line. I can't agree with the money flowing around, but that money is in the administration, not the players. The kids I've come in contact with are really decent people and get the shit knocked out of themselves to get an education. It's the only reason I can tolerate football at this level.

Posted by phidipides at September 9, 2007 12:36 AM

Olbermann and Romo is a force straight out of an old comic book

too bad Romo is a dick. I really tried to like him when he was in Denver but the juice really affected his temperament as well. The guy is a down right prick.

Posted by Simp at September 9, 2007 01:16 AM

SoS, I'm not a Raiders fan, but I am this weekend, I have $100 on them. I'm a Tony Romo fan. Paradox is the Raider fanatic and is going to the game to bring home a hondo for the both of us. Don't be trying to discourage our Raider pick, Mr. Doubting Thomas. Positive vibes, please. I, too, think Seattle is a lock, Coyote was right in bringing that game up. I also like your Cards pick, for the reasons you gave, plus Leinart has a great receiving core to throw to. The great Tony Romo of EIU fame (we share the same college) will indeed recover from his dropped ball snafu to become Super Bowl MVP. See that's what's great about the night before the season opener, your team's always going to the Super Bowl. Thank you for reminding me of he correct Michigan score, too, SoS. Did Kos really start up a football thread? This I gotta see. Paradox is a trend setter.

Thanks, ggb! I think Paradox wants to make this a weekly thing, so stay tuned.

Peter, I like your positive thinking on Romo and the 'Boys.

And Simp, I don't know what you're talking about Romo being in Denver, the Cowboys signed him out of college as a free agent.

I've gotta go check out this Kos thing.

Posted by Jeff Dinelli at September 9, 2007 02:46 AM

Yes, we will be back every week, and I'd like to have some other guests show up, I'm mailing one today, we'll see what he says.

I'm sorry, Sharkbabe, I can't believe I let you down.

I'm off to the game today, not every week will have the Raiders adorned as the logos, oh no. One week even the farking Cowboys will be up there.

Posted by paradox at September 9, 2007 04:16 AM

I am already in my TO jersey with my sweet new Romo hat and I AM READY SOME FOOTBALL.

The Cowboys are a lock but thats a given so I am going to go with a huge sleeper and pick the Packers over the Eagles.

I believe Peter was referring to 2 time pro bowler Bill Romanowski not our beloved QB 1 time pro bowler Tony Romo.

Posted by Fletch at September 9, 2007 04:52 AM

Hey, another Cowboys fan, alright! I hope you're right about the Pack beating Philly but can they run the ball? I don't know.

How much you want for that Romo hat?

And you're right, Fletch, simp must've been talking about Romonowski.

Bring home a victory, Paradox!!

Posted by Jeff Dinelli at September 9, 2007 05:51 AM

Well, you're up early - ready for the Raiders to lose?

Mwhahahaha!

Actually, I haven't watched football since Seahawks were in the playoffs or World Series, or whatever that was, but I just may watch 'em this morning. It's the dang commercials after every down that made me stop watching before. I used to win the pools way back in the day, tho.

Posted by iamcoyote at September 9, 2007 05:56 AM

I watch football and baseball with the sound off, many times putting Mozart on. It puts me in a better place for the Raiders.

Oakland needs a win so bad the have to win today. For once I'm positive the Raiders will concentrate correctly and have enough poise to win. Today.

Posted by paradox at September 9, 2007 06:03 AM

I watch football and baseball with the sound off

Good plan! Loves me some Mozart, though I have a mix cd of Pavarotti's arias that I will play in honor of the late, great master.

Posted by iamcoyote at September 9, 2007 06:11 AM

Cut it out, Coyote, the Raiders will win us some money today!

Posted by Jeff Dinelli at September 9, 2007 06:36 AM

Well, if the money's going to Darcy Burner, who am I to argue?

Posted by iamcoyote at September 9, 2007 06:50 AM

The world is going to hell in a handbag, and you're discussing frigging football?

Posted by tempus at September 9, 2007 08:41 AM

Man (or woman) can't live on outrage alone!

Posted by iamcoyote at September 9, 2007 09:03 AM

...Mr. Doubting Thomas

This is still a reality based community, right? LOL

Arrrgh, go Rrrraiders! How's that Jeff?

Posted by Seven of Six at September 9, 2007 09:35 AM

Well, that’s true, coyote. But football? I admit, I watched it yesterday at my local pub, so I'm being a bit of a hypocrite, but it's one thing to watch it with a vodka and orange in your hand, and another to discuss it.

Posted by tempus at September 9, 2007 09:49 AM

Thanks, SoS! We need all the help we can get!

Posted by Jeff Dinelli at September 9, 2007 10:40 AM

I've got a TO autographed hat.

Posted by peter at September 9, 2007 11:10 AM

So far Fletch nailed his upset pick of the week. The rest of us seem to be in trouble.

Posted by Jeff Dinelli at September 9, 2007 02:40 PM

Seahawks 20-6 over the Bucs! Woohoo! And I hear the Lions won, too, but I can't remember who they were playing....*blink, blink*

Sorry, dudes, but from what I hear, it was a wild game. That's what it's all about, right?? Having some fun? Great idea, ya'll, we'll do it again next week, right?

Posted by iamcoyote at September 9, 2007 05:19 PM

Good pic, Coyote! And leave it to you to point out the opening week failure of our football co-hosts. One hint: it's not all about the game and how competitive or exciting it was. It's about WINNING.

There is no joy in Mudville tonight.

But I still have my guy Tony Romo to root for. He and the Cowboys will not fail.

Posted by Jeff Dinelli at September 9, 2007 07:13 PM

It's the Romo show tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bye, bye Coughlin.

Posted by peter at September 9, 2007 07:57 PM

You're right, Peter, my man Romo came through BIG TIME! I can sleep a little poorer from that Raider game, but happy that Tony is a star on opening day.

Posted by Jeff Dinelli at September 9, 2007 08:44 PM

Jeff, I've learned from many years of legal betting, *wink*, that the team with the worst record in football from the previous year is not a very safe bet in the first game of the year.
Hope I don't bust any bubbles, I've been doing it for 35 years.

Posted by Seven of Six at September 9, 2007 09:05 PM

Ugh, Raider fans and Cowboy fans.

Seahwaks? Hope they lose the rest of their games and their quarterback gets benched for being a loser!

Love football, hate, just hate its politics. We have the worst owner, Carpetbagger Spanos, and probablay the best team in the league, for sure the best RB in LT, 25 yards notwithstanding.

I used to like the Patriots, admired the coaching genius of Belicheck getting these selfish and pampered young men to buy into the team concept, was amazed at the talent of Brady. Then they opened their mouths.

You like Bush, support Bush, big middle finger from me. That's just the way it is.

Go Chargers though. Just wish I could figure out a way to get rid of the owner.

Posted by Duckman GR at September 9, 2007 09:13 PM

Uh oh, sorry Duckman, LT is a Bush man too. What's your next team?

Posted by peter at September 10, 2007 03:26 AM

SoS, where were you for advice? You have a good pick tonight with the Cards, too.

Posted by Jeff Dinelli at September 10, 2007 05:40 AM

crickets

Posted by Duckman GR at September 10, 2007 06:39 AM

Seahwaks? Hope they lose the rest of their games and their quarterback gets benched for being a loser!

You're joking, right? Gotta be. It's bad enough the country's so politically divided; I can't imagine you'd want to have it bleed into sports and the like. You're just messing with my head, aren't ya?

Posted by iamcoyote at September 10, 2007 07:04 AM

Jeff, If I recall you wanted all these positive vibes. I was the realist remember.
I'll be more than happy to give you my opinion on next weeks teams.

BTW, don't take the Raiders next week, they're playing the Broncos, in Denver.

Posted by Seven of Six at September 10, 2007 07:23 AM

That was one truly fucked up football game, and I'll take my lumps next Saturday night NFL Open Thread like a man.

Shit. We had a great time with great food but dern, I thought the Raiders would improve with a new coach.

Posted by paradox at September 10, 2007 07:56 AM

paradox, Don't get me wrong, the Raiders showed great improvement. It's a lot to ask of a new young coach who has to rebuild the NFL's worst team. Give them another year or two.
You need that 1st, 1st round pick on the team...now!
