I may not like Hillary, but she doesn't lack guts. It will be interesting to see which side wins out, guts or calculation. Or...maybe they both will. :-) Afterall, she DOES have to win the nomination first.

Posted by jj at September 10, 2007 02:47 PMGood post, Steve. I'm a little unclear of the Committee rules. I've noticed that as a junior Senator, it's hard for Hillary to get a word in edgewise during these hearings. She will be allowed a certain time to question the General, right? Every member is allowed to speak?
I'm assuming so, but please clear that up if someone can. If she does get some time, hell yeah, tomorrow's a big day. That's a huge story. C'mon, Hillary. Do the right thing.
Posted by Jeff Dinelli at September 10, 2007 02:49 PMI fear they will follow the habit of Senators to make longwinded statements before asking any questions. What we need is some laser-focussed prosecutorial "just yes or no, General" questioning, but that will only happen in my fantasy hearing, not real life.
Posted by biggerbox at September 10, 2007 02:54 PMJeff, you have a guy in Hill's campaign - email him and tell him that we want to hear why the actual data for their handy dandy charts won't be released so an independent analysis can be done. Seems a reasonable request to me.

Posted by jj at September 10, 2007 05:27 PM"....why he spent so much time in August flacking for the surge instead of doing his military job?"
Actually, the "flacking" is part of his job. He is a flag-rank officer and lobbying for the resources he needs to do his job -- military success -- is part of his job. That is "ok," though. Perhaps it is that you do not quite understand the job of senior military officers....being a military thing and all that.
"Do you place party about country?"
We know you do. So, how did you enjoy that Moveon.org add. I have the feeling that Osama approves: it might even show up as a talking point in his next video.
Posted by And Bagley Was A Friend of Mine at September 10, 2007 05:28 PMSen. John Kerry, D-Massachusetts, called the ad "over the top."
“I don’t like any kind of characterizations in our politics that call into question any active duty, distinguished general,” Kerry told CNN, adding “who I think under any circumstances serves with the best interests of our country.”
Even Rolling Stone magazine is calling it "a bad pun driving a despicable message."
Harry Reid is pissed at this ad. The senate tomorrow will go out of its way to make him comfortable. And for you Edwards supporters:
Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards carries a running list of people he might put in his Cabinet, and it includes "more than one" Republican.
"I want to be ready for when I get sworn in," the former North Carolina senator said between campaigns stops as he dug into a travel bag for the list.
"I might have it with me," Edwards told The Associated Press. "I wouldn't show it to you, but I could have it with me."
Now John Edwards is consorting with the enemy.

NBC Reporter: ‘Paris Hilton Could Ride A Bicycle In A Bikini Through Anbar’ With McCain’s
Protection
From Think Progress today:
Petraeus Falsely Claims That Six Months Ago, ‘No One Would Have Forecast’ Anbar’s Success
So five months ago it was only safe with some 100 GI's around you and TP now claims that Petraeus "falsely claims" that nobody would have thought six months ago the progress in Anbar. These people said nothing was happening back then. No progress was being made and all was lost. McCain had to be surrounded by a massive contingent of Army to walk the streets with body armor.
I guess that's some wiring thing happening here.
"President" Kerry says Moveon.org's ad is "over the top." He states General Petraeus is an honorable man who "under any circumstances serves with the best interests of our country.”
Moveon sure has stepped in it this time.

how many more American families will be destroyed because of Bush's ego?
Kerry's an idiot, always has been. And just as ambitious and calculating as Hillary, just not as good at it. I'm beginning to view "calculating" as a characteristic that puts a candidate in a more vulnerable position, for some reason. Not sure why. I used to think it would make a candidate stronger, but now I'm wondering if it contributes to inconsistencies, or something like that. Maybe it involves narcissism, which seems to be a necessary ingredient in any candidate's decision to run as president. I'll have to "study" it a little more.

Posted by And Bagley Was A Friend Of Mine at September 10, 2007 07:01 PMWell, to tell you the truth, Bagless, I'm afraid to even bother to try to fly anywhere, considering the real possibility that my name might be on the no-fly list for having attended a Quaker (Friends)church as a kid, and now for protesting this bogus war. Why waste my time? I drive. I seem to remember that people can't wear tee-shirts with anti-war messages in some shopping malls (freedom of speech), I've lost the Constitutional right to habeas corpus, I can be tortured for my beliefs ...Need I go on?

Posted by Seven of Six at September 10, 2007 07:34 PMRemember how we keep harping on a "political" solution in Iraq being more effective and workable than a military solution? Well, sometimes I wonder if the same is true here at home. Reverse this trajectory before it's too late, give us a political solution before they try to impose a military "solution" on us, as if WE're the problem. Bring on REAL change, a political solution here at home to this mess, one that will last over time, and not only from one election to the next. Stop trying to give us yesterday's solutions to today's problems. Been there, done that. It didn't work then, so why sould it now?

Posted by Julie at September 10, 2007 08:51 PMJulie, Julie, Julie,
Your examples of rights that you've had removed were nothing but paranoid ravings. Now repeat after me five times 'the US government is not going to imprison me because I went to a Quaker church and protested about a war'. Moonbats always feel persecuted when they simply are not.
As for shopping malls, if they boot you out for an anti-war shirt, that's the fault of the mall's management and their over-zealous rent-a-cops, not the government. Repeat after me five times 'my local mall is not run by the US government'.
As for habeas corpus, you've still got it. All American citizens are tried in US courts, even for 'terrorism' type offences. Before you jump up and down and disagree with me, you must provide a single case where an American citizen has been arrested by the US government for a crime and hasn't gone before a US court (or a military court if they are a member of the armed services). You won't be able to.
Captain Reality.
Posted by CaptainReality at September 10, 2007 09:36 PMWell, if Hillary's prior actions on Iraq are any indication-- starting with her capitulation on and cheering on of the IWR and the war in the years after that-- she'll just roll over here too.
It's hard to fathom anymore how treacherous she's been on the Iraq issue. I'm not fond of the way she disses American labor these days, either. I certainly won't be voting for her, even if she's nominated.

Really, this makes me wonder if there has been any national discussion on the timing of the primaries/caucuses with regards to pushing forward same. Are the Dems in states that are attempting to push forward their primary/caucus dates making a tactical mistake for the Dems in general? In other words, could some new calculation change the equation, whether a current event or a stonger-than-expected Republican opponent of the already-chosen Dem nominee? Would it be smarter for the Dems to wait until after the Repuglies have made their choice?

That's the trouble with a lot of people on this board. You're so utterly convinced that your way of seeing the world is the only rational way, that you are unable to believe that anyone else could hold a contrary view without being a troll.
That's why this site is largely an echo chamber. Peter and I aren't trolls, and no, we're not the same person. From reading the threads, Peter is one of the most sensible, courteous posters here.
Oh, and the challenges that Peter and I posted to name specific instances of rights removed or any American denied habeas corpus have been ignored by everyone except Judith, and she only answered one of the questions, and her answer was pretty unsatisfactory.
