But Steve, Senator Craig was bold and unflinching in the wearing of his flag lapel pin! Even in his mug shot!
Yes, maybe Barak Hussein Obama doesn't troll for gay sex in public restrooms or prey on teenagers or buy hookers to diaper his tush, but where is his American flag pin?
Don't you understand what's important? Middle names and lapel pins!

Dang, wish I was joking.
Posted by Sharkbabe at October 6, 2007 03:23 PMits starting to seem like there are lots of closet gays in the GOP. And if a gay person wishes to remain in the closet, so be it. But regardless, it is the blatant hypocritical actions to further the "do anything to advance the conservative agenda" mentality that reveals the modern GOP as a hollow, morally corrupt entity hiding behind a Christian Moral facade. It is a Grand Old Hypocritical Party. There is nothing Christian about hypocracy.
Posted by T2 at October 6, 2007 03:23 PMI'd be surprised if very many GOP really knew. All of the others in their own closets would have known but not said a word to any of their collegues. "Gaydar" among white collar, conservative, straight men is very low. Would expect that it would be higher among the women but Republican women can be as willfully blind as the men.
It's far more plausible that Senate DEMs knew. But unlike their GOP colleagues, they would have respected Craig's right to privacy and being an hypocrite.
Posted by Marie at October 6, 2007 04:04 PMI haven't met a Republican male in twenty years who was not a psychosexual creepshow in one way or other when you scratched him.
Not one.
Oh, except family man Rush Limbaugh.
Posted by Sharkbabe at October 6, 2007 04:54 PMSharkbabe, I'm going to have to Depend's, you make me laugh so much at times...
Posted by tempus at October 6, 2007 05:32 PM"resort to Depend's". Amazing what vodka and orange does to your brain. I don't recommend it.
Posted by tempus at October 6, 2007 05:35 PMRepublicans have been playing fundamentalist Christians, anti-gays, anti-taxers, anti-governmenters for suckers for years! And, it has worked. Why should they stop now? We are at heart a very stupid people.
Posted by PretzelsOne at October 6, 2007 06:24 PMJosh Marshall had a post up at Muckraker about a GOP-er named Joey DiFatta (sp) who was arrested under "wide-stance" circumstances. Louisiana I think.
Posted by gtash at October 6, 2007 06:41 PMI don't see any evidence that Craig's voting is going to change. He still has the same count value.
Posted by Richard W. Crews at October 6, 2007 09:18 PMThey were probably happy to keep Craig on, once they knew his secret. And I'm sure they let Craig know that they knew.
Made him easy to manipulate and keep him in line with threats. Rethug organized crime 'ethics'.
Mike G. is right. We have been saying for years that we suspect this Administration is heavy into blackmail. How many more?
Posted by Judith at October 7, 2007 04:06 AMIsn't it interesting that Barney Frank, who is honest and openly gay, has no problems with his life style. Seems to me Frank is a perfect example for those closet Republicans gays. If your not a hypocrite, life is a whole lot easier. Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot that gays are not allowed in the Republican Party.
Posted by Judith at October 7, 2007 04:19 AMor at least not allowed to be open.
Posted by Judith at October 7, 2007 04:21 AMI don't believe Novak. The Republicans knew and they are running out of party faithful who will lie for them.
Posted by gtash at October 7, 2007 05:58 AMmy gaydar goes off when I see Bush, Sen. Mitch McConnell and Sen. Lindsay Graham
Posted by gay veteran at October 7, 2007 07:03 AMgay veteran - interesting comment. Not McConnell and Graham, those two seem obvious. But the other one. When I was writing up my take on Gannon/Guckert, I consulted with several men who have gaydar for their take on that question. The consensus was he didn't trip their gaydar antennae. One unsolicited and private communication retold a story from long ago that was tantalizing but it was fifth hand and so old that I couldn't use it. So, the Gannon/Guckert mystery remains unsolved and he's not talking.
Posted by Marie at October 7, 2007 09:49 AMCraig's lapel flag activates his vibrating anal plug.
Posted by TIKI AL at October 7, 2007 09:53 AMMarie, I thought Gannon was Rove's pet or friend of friend's, at least, not really connected to Bush personally, but to Rove instead.
Posted by Brian Bell at October 7, 2007 07:33 PMI hate to burst the collective bubble, but I happen to believe Senator Craig. He is not gay.
He likes to have sex with men on occasion, but he's not gay.
This is somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but it is also somewhat completely authentic. I think it's funny and true. A lot of pretty repressed conservatives actually "embrace" this position with regard to their sexuality. Mr. Cohen of the McCarthy communist witch-hunt era comes to mind.
That strange, convoluted sexual identity is key to understanding the Gannon/Guckert story. There's something here that is mixing power, sado-masochism, and sexual gratification. It's a potent mix I guess, but it's completely different from the sexuality of sensible, reasonable, kind human beings who may identify themselves as gay.
Posted by angel at October 8, 2007 06:32 AMI don't know if Gannon/Guckert is gay, but he was a male prostitute catering to men who like to have sex with men. Gee, wonder why he had such open access to the White House?
