Well, Hillary made it easy for the Post. The way I see it, she should have made a declaration with the first part of the sentence (my choice would have been with an exclamation point at the end), instead of trying to make it a compound sentence, I think they call it. Here's the sentence, as she said it:
Well I think I’ve been very clear about that too, we should not conduct or condone torture and it is not clear yet exactly what this administration is or isn’t doing, we’re getting all kinds of mixed messages.
And here's how she should have said it:
Well I think I’ve been very clear about that too, we should not conduct or condone torture, period. The problem is that it is not clear yet exactly what this administration is or isn’t doing, we’re getting all kinds of mixed messages.
It ended up looking like she was slip-sliding over this (new?)position on torture, as if she were trying to camouflage it by distracting attention away from that and towards Bush. I know, sounds nit-picky, but it would have come off a lot better.
Posted by Julie at October 10, 2007 03:38 PMYeah, those darned compound sentences always throw me. The "we should not condone or conduct torture" bit was really trickily worded. I'm not sure how, but tricky for sure.
I think she should get a tatoo on her left bicep. The word TORTURE inside one of those red circles with a line through it. THEN I'd be convinced.
Posted by snark at October 10, 2007 03:52 PMSnark, let me grease my fist, and I promise it won't hurt when I shove my foot up your ass.
Posted by Julie at October 10, 2007 03:58 PMThere is no "grey zone" or redefining the Geneva Conventions. Torture, of any human being or animal is absolutely wrong and intolerable in any civilized society. I don't care what party or Gawd you're from, it's just frigging wrong.
Two young women, out a car of five (an illegal taxi) were killed by M-16 fire in Iraq yesterday. The mercenaries took off before the military or police could arrive at the scene. We are living in a very, very disturbed world.
snark - LOL. I don't think that retort could be phrased any better.
Posted by Jamie at October 10, 2007 04:32 PMJulie,
Are you a NYC cop or a former Baathist?
Posted by snark at October 10, 2007 05:04 PMThis is exactly why I read this and DailyKos.
Dropped my $50 in the cup.
Thanks for what you do!!
Snark, let me grease my fist...when I shove my foot up your ass.
I'm confused - is Julie flirting with you, or threatening to kick your ass, or both?
Posted by iamcoyote at October 10, 2007 05:24 PMNice post btw, Jeff - Greg Sargent at TPM linked to you! One quibble, though. Is Sully leftist? Or one of those "leftists" like Alan Combes?
Posted by iamcoyote at October 10, 2007 05:52 PMI am giving snarky snark a slippery compound sentence....you know, kind of like Hill gave.
Posted by Julie at October 10, 2007 06:15 PMCoyote, you know, good point. I don't know if he's a real lefty. But I was so pissed off when I was writing this I may have been reaching.
Thanks, btw.

can we not trust anything that we read from mainstream newspapers? Are we going to have to run every quote by the campaign to make sure of its accuracy?
No, we can't trust anything from the mainstream newspapers.
Yes, we need to parse every quote for accuracy, in fact and as reported.
The newsmedia is not our friend in any way, shape or form. Some parts may be, but as a whole, nope.
Posted by Duckman GR at October 10, 2007 11:11 PMJulie may I watch?
Posted by JohnT at October 11, 2007 05:26 AMJohn T,
Those who can, do.
Those who can't, wank-off while watching.
Posted by snark at October 11, 2007 06:03 AMsnark LMAO.
Posted by JohnT at October 11, 2007 06:09 AMI hope you don't mind me posting. I want to admit upfront that I'm a Clinton supporter, but I'm an Independent (from New Hampshire), not a Democrat.
In my support of Clinton, the thing that has shocked me the most is how readily Democrats are not only to believe, but to REPEAT, talking points from people (like WaPo) who have been broadcasting the GOP talking points for at least a decade now.
I don't mind anyone fact-checking, I know Clinton's not perfect, and I will proudly be voting for any Democrat who wins the primary. And I truly believe ANY Democrat will beat ANY Republican.
But to see a bunch of leftwing blogs spread the rumor that Clinton refuses to condemn torture (et cetera) is foolish, imo.
I volunteered for Al Gore, Howard Dean, and then Kerry/Edwards. I never knew what it meant when people said Democrats eat their own until I started supporting Hillary. Kinda sad, really.
Anyway, thanks. Great website!
Posted by Jan at October 11, 2007 10:33 AMgreat post, but the Dems should keep in mind an old Army saying: KISS = keep it simple, stupid
