Just another day in the pub neighborhood. I mean, isn't the only guy Dick (Cheney) goes to for a radio interview, the drug criminal who never paid for his crime, the aptly named "Rush"?
Posted by Sharon at November 4, 2007 05:53 AMHa, ha....yeah, but that doesn't bother me either on the face of it. The problem is these are the guys always screaming about The War On Drugs, putting kids with a bag of weed in prison for 10 years. Hypocrisy. I hate it.

Can a felon continue to hold a pilot's license?
Serious replies only.

Posted by j at November 4, 2007 06:10 AMIOKIYAR as usual, it's ok if you're a Republican
Posted by gay veteran at November 4, 2007 06:38 AMj, good point. They can hold licenses, but if the conviction was alcohol or drug related, chances are slim if not impossible. My headline is misleading, you're right, Martin seems to be just loaning his plane, not doing the actual flying as far as I can tell.

Or for that matter a convicted fellon (on the lam) yucking it up with Hillary: Norman Hsu.
Say, how much cash did Marc Rich "donate" to the Clinton Library?
Jeff, it goes both ways.
Posted by Bagley at November 4, 2007 07:33 AMHow does a guy who gets caught not once but twice down in Florida attempting to sell drugs to an undercover officer (not indication of a smart criminal); while on probation in Florida move to Tennessee and once there set up a series of businesses, a pizza parlor, hardware store and then start looking into real estate? It seems in a matter of minutes this guy was not only getting start up business loans in a state he had no business history in, while he was on probation in another state but now the smoking mirrors are so well oiled that the guy "owns" a private plane which can accomodate the delicate sensibilities of a presidential candidate?
I'm going to approach this thing from a slightly different angle. Most of us have had a good laugh over Thompson's phony "redneck credentials" as per his red non pickup truck.
It's also true that most of the bigwigs behind the NASCAR racing sciene have become openly partisan Republicans scince dubya made what can be called "postmodernist rube" the new chic amongst his supporters in the trailor park and McMansion subdivision crowds.
Yet, these same motor moguls tacitly support the war on drugs through their affiliation with todays' GOP. Do they not see the irony in the fact that the same law enforcement tatics that were ineffective during prohibition at stopping alcohol but very effective in creating the whole bootlegger economy that NASCAR sprang out of?
I know it's a rheticorical question and most of them think of themselves as great red state law abiding christians but it is another symptiom of why we have a culture where 1% of our population is sent with inadequite equipment to fight in Iraq so that another 1% of our population, including the NASCAR motor mogols, can profet take on thier oil stocks.
As a prosecutor Fred only nailed moonshiners.
He lacks the necessary sophistication to recognize a cokehead.
Posted by TIKI AL at November 4, 2007 09:33 AMI agree. The hypocracy is the thing.
I'm sure the Fred has smoked and snorted his share, just like everybody else. And obviously, if you're gonna sell 11 pounds of weed, it's good to have some powerful friends when the fit hits the shan.
Can't we all just admit we've done drugs, we've cheated, we've lied, and we've had some freaky, fucked up sex? All of us, presidents, congressmen, and voters alike.
Can't we take the stick out of the ass of America and lighten up?
The fact that The Fred has a Drug Buddy is the first positive thing I've heard about him.
