Comments: Hillary Campaign Fights Back With Facts

Ok. Ok. So they left a tip. A nice one at that.

But I heard that her goons were around back shaking down the Chinese kitchen staff for "donations".

Posted by snark at November 8, 2007 01:50 PM

That site TOTALLY busts Edwards on the ongoing combat missions in Iraq issue. Wow. He's all over the place on that one.

Tool.

Posted by MaskedVigilante at November 8, 2007 01:53 PM

snark, I was in the middle of sipping a Coke and you just made it come out my nose, no lie.

Thanks a lot.

Posted by Jeff Dinelli at November 8, 2007 01:57 PM

must have been a really good lunch and great service. By tomorrow the GOP will be slamming her for over-tipping....another $400 haircut-type scandal. I can just hear them now "just think how wasteful she'll be with our tax dollars".

Posted by T2 at November 8, 2007 02:01 PM

snark, that was brilliant. And now, I'm checking the fact site and refreshing until that rumour is debunked.

I'm beginning to wonder, MV, about your white-hot hatred for Edwards. Did he, like, boink your girlfriend once or something? He seems so mild to engender such passionate dislike.

Posted by iamcoyote at November 8, 2007 02:11 PM

A good lunch? A Maid-Rite? Gaaaak.

Its Iowa's version of the White Castle Slider 6-pack.

I see the FAUX link is now blaming the entire wrong story on NPR's journalism.

Posted by idiosynchronic at November 8, 2007 02:12 PM

Just the name, "Maid-Rite." Ugh.

Posted by iamcoyote at November 8, 2007 02:21 PM

I think a case can be made for Hillary promoting an unhealthy lifestyle by frequenting such a greasy fast food joint. She's clearly unpresidential.

I find it amazing that Ralph Nader has NEVER been in a McDonald's. That's anti-corporate dedication, Man.

You know what I think I'm gonna do tonight? Post a really crazy rumor about Hillary and see if I can get it debunked on this new site. Anyone have a suggestion? Maybe something to do with a Castro tattoo?

I'm having success with my nutiness this week. Yesterday's Obama/Edwards rumor? Joe Trippi himself, on his website, came clean on it, the National Review of all places picked up on it, even Sully, Andrew Sullivan. Not to mention the Democratic Daily and Taylor Marsh. Call me what you will, but I can start a rumor, friends. Or I should say Alegre at Kos can. It was her fault, after all.

I don't know if "white-hot" is apt, but I find him creepy. And I know this is going to sound overly simplistic, but the famous clip of him doing primping his hair over and over...

I'm sorry, but people aren't that complicated. Seeing him obsess over his hair tells me everything I need to know about him as a man.

And that's completely disregarding the myriad of political issues he and I differ on.

I'm sick of people on this site calling him progressive while ignoring DK. I'm sick of the way it takes him FOREVER to answer a question at a debate. How clever he thinks he is.

Okay, maybe "white-hot" was on the money. 8)

I look at him and I see another empty suit full of empty promises. The typical candidate.

And I do think he has used his family tragedies and health challenges to his advantage.

Oh, and I'd put money on Hillary if she challenged him to an arm wrestling match.

I thought he was a pussy when he ran w/ Kerry and I think he's a pussy now.

Thanks for asking, though!

Posted by MaskedVigilante at November 8, 2007 02:59 PM

I think Hillary folks are getting good practice to respond to dirty tricks of Repubs in the general election.

Posted by suresh at November 8, 2007 03:03 PM

Jeff, don't believe everything you read at dKos!

MV, well, thanks for sharing. And now we get down to it, don't we? As eriposte has pretty much shown, there's not a whole helluva lotta difference between the three front runners, so what it comes down to is personal attraction/repulsion. Which is fine, we're all human, after all. I guess for a guy, the hair-fussing video hits a nerve - I just don't see it, myself, since he never stuck the dang comb in his mouth. But I do understand why that video made the rounds over and over now. It was a tickle-the-lizard-brain thing that was highly effective. Interesting, and instructive.

Posted by iamcoyote at November 8, 2007 03:10 PM

So, who is spreading these lies, and who allows them so easily to enter the conversation? Which of our media servants is involved in propaganda?

Posted by jim at November 8, 2007 03:31 PM

Ya spend $400 on a haircut. It looks great when you leave the salon. But no matter how much you fuss with it you can never get it to look the same for you the next day! Sum bitch!

Actually, I heard he was having so much trouble in that video because some of Hillary's goons replaced his John Paul Mitchell hairspray with some cheap convenience store brand.

Posted by snark at November 8, 2007 03:41 PM

Sorry. NPR did not "correct" its story. It reports that a manager who was not on the scene that day reported that a tip was left, but did not know who actually received the tip. The waitress interviewed on NPR, who said that she did not receive a tip, was not interviewed and therefore has not changed her version of events. Since she was on the scene, basic reporting would suggest that her story should receive greater weight than that of someone who was not there.

I expect better reporting from The Left Coaster. This is really poor quality stuff....

Goddammit! I want some goons!

Posted by iamcoyote at November 8, 2007 04:45 PM

Jeff,
Ralph Nader has never been in a McDonald's because he's never had to deal with a hyperactive toddler tearing his house down because he couldn't go outside. I don't like McDonalds for the most part but they can be a blessing when a mom needs a break.

Posted by Ga6thDem at November 8, 2007 05:33 PM

Wow. Hillary is apparently concerned with the Fox News vote, because I don't know anyone that gives two sh*ts whether Hillary tips at restaurants or not. I doubt any of the poor waitresses really wanted to serve a high-profile guest in the middle of their double-shift after 'closing' the night before and 'walking' with around minimum wage during the lunch 'rush'. They were probably just happy to see her leave (as well as any other high-profile table).

Hmm...Hillary on Iraq (via the 'facts' website).

1. No promise not to establish U.S. military bases on Iraqi soil.

2. No pledge to completely end military operations in Iraq (with or without a date-certain).

3. No talk of substantial or total international debt relief for whatever form of government eventually emerges in Iraq.

4. No discussion of the reconstruction that never really took place and that our nation still owes the Iraqi people.

Facts, eh? Well, it is a 'fact' that there will be weather tomorrow. Of course, one may wish to know what TYPE of weather there will be....

Posted by Tampa Student at November 8, 2007 05:38 PM

Ouch! Bad reporting of a website reporting on a NPR story. The Mystery of The Missing Maid-Rite Tip lives on! Is the manager of a restaurant a valid spokesperson for a restaurant? Is he in on a Clintonian Maid-Rite Cover-Up? These questions must be answered. Be assured this story of Hillary Hijinks will be closely and intrepidly followed.

Posted by Jeff Dinelli at November 8, 2007 05:42 PM

Personally, I hope that the Republicans try to make a big deal out of Hillary leaving a generous tip. Maybe the same advisors who told Bush that it was a good idea to veto a water bill just when the republican red southeast is in a severe drought will also try to play fiscal conservitives by advocating stiffing working people. If they do, it will just be a symbolic example of what their policies do everyday.

Posted by herbal tee at November 8, 2007 05:55 PM

Ga6thDem, Happy Meals indeed come in handy, not to mention that the double arches are a blessing for those of us who can't cook worth a damn.

Tampa Student, I never tried to advertise the site as a supplier of answers to the meaning of life, either. But I do agree with you to a point, I guess. I much prefer Dennis Kucinich's approach towards getting our troops out of Iraq. He says he'll have them withdrawn within the first 3 months of his term.

Posted by Jeff Dinelli at November 8, 2007 05:59 PM

But I do understand why that video made the rounds over and over now. It was a tickle-the-lizard-brain thing that was highly effective. Interesting, and instructive.

Wait. Who's the lizard brain and who's the tickler?

It wasn't a skit on SNL. It's footage of a guy doing something ridiculous. If I saw any guy doing that, I'd draw conclusions about his vanity and weakness of character.

I don't know about the rounds it made, but I saw it once and thought this is not a president. I want a president who says, "I don't give a fuck what my hair looks like -- I've got a job to do!! I've got something to say!!"

It's just my take on the guy. It doesn't mean I've been brainwashed by the massive right wing conspiracy.

Posted by MaskedVigilante at November 8, 2007 06:04 PM

If I saw any guy doing that, I'd draw conclusions about his vanity and weakness of character.

This is my point, you're drawing conclusions about character from a perception of vanity derived from a video clip of a guy getting ready for a photo op. Have you never watched the blooper clips of your favorite movies? They're full of those moments. The thing is, the video made the rounds because it was one of the exhibits in the "Breck Girl" narrative that the right has painted that portrays Edwards as the girly-man. It was aimed at all manly men, right or left, who see any form of vanity as "weak" and prolly gay, which is "weak." And the narrative caught hold subconsciously (in the lizard brain) because it feeds into the cultural narrative we've all been steeped in since birth that states "men who are vain are pussies." You fell for the narrative, because you've been programmed by the culture to react exactly as you have done. You weren't brainwashed, really, you were just brought up in America.

But that's okay, 'cos so was I. I confess, I only liked John Edwards 'cos he's cute. *giggle*

"I much prefer Dennis Kucinich's approach towards getting our troops out of Iraq. He says he'll have them withdrawn within the first 3 months of his term."

Yeah. It was nice the other night when the Democratic Party ensured that the only message of justice, peace, and adherence to international law was being delivered by the shortest guy on the stage who was simultaneously having to dodge references to UFO's and Shirley MacClaine hurled by propagandists and corporate-funded lapdogs.

Posted by Tampa Student at November 8, 2007 07:11 PM

Tampa Student, you're right, that sucks that he never gets a fair shot in debates, media, blogs, anywhere, really. But that's why we ultimately get to vote. And he has mine. I sent him money this week after his impeachment resolution, but I was sold on him years ago. He's the best and only progressive candidate running. Again.

Posted by Jeff Dinelli at November 8, 2007 09:08 PM

The story of the "no tip" continues with NPR. The latest article basically says that there is no evidence of tip. The credit card does not include a tip because the restaurant does not allow it, and no one saw no 100 dollar bill to be shared.

The Clinton campaign should have just said that it was an oversight and end it there.

You weren't brainwashed, really, you were just brought up in America.

Meh. I'm pretty sure a French dude would see that and think, "Mon Dieu! This man, he love his hair!"

But you are clealy well-versed on the socialization of the American Masculine Male, and it's a valid point. As such, I'll own it. He's a Nancy Boy. A Cupcake. But I don't need the Marlboro Man standing up there. I'd gladly take DK's geeky vegan thing over Haircut 400 any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

The story of the "no tip" continues with NPR.

Never mind Brill cream. We've gotta get focused on how Hillary manages to survive Tipgate.

Posted by MaskedVigilante at November 9, 2007 05:29 AM

Glad you can acknowledge your susceptibility to such things, MV. The Republicans have paid millions to PR consultants and advertising gurus over the years to learn, just as the corporations have, how best to bypass the thinking part of the brain and speak directly to the lizard brain. When they catapult the propaganda, they know exactly what messages get through because they've been testing them on us for years. Newtie's list of words to be used on Dems way back when was the first (I think) implementation of this strategy in the political sphere - advertisers for commercial products have been using it for decades. And why not? It really, really works, doesn't it?

Posted by iamcoyote at November 9, 2007 07:32 AM

Lets see, they can produce a Visa reciept for $157 and not one for the tip. Looks to me like the server was correct as well as the NPR report.

"A Clinton campaign staffer called on Esterday at the restaurant Thursday after the story aired. The staff member apologized to her and gave her a $20 bill, according to Esterday. The Clinton campaign confirmed that visit. The campaign also produced photocopies of receipts showing $157.46 was paid to Maid-Rite on a VISA card on Oct. 8 for meals consumed by the candidate's entourage. The tip was supposed to have been paid in cash, and the campaign insisted such a payment was made but has declined to make available a staff member who was present at Maid-Rite and left tip money." NPR

A cash tip on a credit card bill, though not unheard of does create a problem. How do you account for that expense when filing for re-embursement. How does the campaign show this expense?

Then why did the staffer try to make good with $20.00? If a $100 was given this would not be neccessary. The $20.00 wouldn't even make 15%, and I'm sure this server gave superior service.

This has happened before, so its not new news. Campaigns have to be more attentive to servers taking care of them while on the road. These people work hard and long hours a deserve better.

how best to bypass the thinking part of the brain and speak directly to the lizard brain. When they catapult the propaganda, they know exactly what messages get through because they've been testing them on us for years.

Okay, I can buy that in the case of Edwards and his Marcia Brady hairbrushing antics, but I would imagine the rest of the propaganda has to do with usual GOP talking points like "family values" and "better times" and lately, "Ronald Reagan".

Those turn me completely off.

And it's not that I see the Republican candidates as being particularly manly. I started backing Ron Paul before I ever saw a picture of him or heard him talk.

I'm curious now. Is there some subliminal message I'm buying into there?

Posted by MaskedVigilante at November 9, 2007 11:45 AM

Well, MV, you're looking at two different things here. You've got your code words for the GOP base, like "family values," which means "we hate gays," since, obviously, they don't care about families, (a lot of them have the values of trailer trash), and they're all about the babies until they're born. The "Reagan" garbage is a rallying cry like "Remember the Maine" etc.

Then you have the gender related stuff like the hair fluffing. Of course, not every male is going to react the same way to the video, but the likelihood that a lot of guys will react negatively went up with the added narrative provided by the pundits and their minions. By the time you saw the dang thing, you were already conditioned by the culture, and further conditioned by the narrative to see what the folks who pushed that video all over the 'nets wanted you to see: a nancy-boy too obssessed with his hair to have a good character.

You gotta admit, it's brilliant. And way too easy to do.

Posted by iamcoyote at November 9, 2007 01:37 PM

Yeah, but all programming aside, that's a pretty ridiculous clip.

You implied that you liked him. Who are you liking now?

Posted by MaskedVigilante at November 9, 2007 01:50 PM

I'll vote for whatever the Dem candidate is. They're nowhere near perfect, but they're better than the GOP.

Posted by iamcoyote at November 9, 2007 02:14 PM

And yes, it's a silly clip - I'll bet everyone would look silly if there was a camera behind their bathroom mirror, or in the green room of a tv show. It's kinda funny, though, how something that I saw and didn't think twice about, affected you almost viscerally and totally colored your perception of the guy. 'Course, I just don't get guys sometimes. You all obssess about the weirdest things!

Posted by iamcoyote at November 9, 2007 02:38 PM

"I thought he was a pussy when he ran w/ Kerry and I think he's a pussy now."

"I heard he was having so much trouble in that video because some of Hillary's goons replaced his John Paul Mitchell hairspray with some cheap convenience store brand."

The GOP and korporate media would like to thank you for your use of the "Breck Girl" narrative.

Posted by gay veteran at November 10, 2007 03:50 PM

Nah, we don't obsess. WOMEN obsess. Guys look at some like that and think, "Huh. Fag." And are immediately on to the next topic. 8)

Somebody actually brought up Hillary's Tipgate at a thing tonight. Apparently it's becoming quite the issue.
