Comments: Sandra Day O’Connor is Not Missed

Here's what I don't get. O'Connor is constantly excoriated because she was more independent than the rest and occasionally voted for "our side" on cases. Though I'm appalled that she voted for the Repukes view on the 2000 election, why NOT EXCORIATE all the other Repub justices as well??? Any one of them could have also voted for Gore in the election mess! She gets branded with shame because she crossed party lines before....others could have also crossed party lines.

Paradox, I think you're right about everything, except the bit about the L.A. Times. I appreciate that they mention the ending to her retirement story. I don't agree with the editorial's conclusion, just as you don't either. But I appreciate hearing what's happened to her, having retired to take care of her hubby. Serves the bitch right.

This is what Jonah Goldberg had to say when interviewed by radio personality and author, John Moe:

He said conservatives "want to preserve the notion of the American Revolution that is actually liberal..."

"the things that have animated conservatives over the last 50 years have been the Constitution, civil rights, the order of communities...all remarkably liberal" (ideals)...

"the are all sorts of conservatives who say without embarrassment that they are also classic liberals..."

"...the original founding fathers were all classical liberal. I guess there were exceptions, but all the good ones All of them believed in traditions. With a few exceptions, all of them believed in the role of God and community and all these deep conservative beliefs, but they all believed in the power of the individual and the limited power of the state...."

Along with all many other reasons to hold O'Connor in high disregard, is this:

"The following week, Newsweek published a more detailed account:

"[A]t an election-night party on Nov. 7, surrounded for the most part by friends and familiar acquaintances, [Justice O'Connor] let her guard drop for a moment when she heard the first critical returns shortly before 8 p.m. Sitting in her hostess's den, staring at a small black-and-white television set, she visibly started when CBS anchor Dan Rather called Florida for Al Gore. 'This is terrible,' she exclaimed. She explained to another partygoer that Gore's reported victory in Florida meant that the election was 'over,' since Gore had already carried two other swing states, Michigan and Illinois.

"Moments later, with an air of obvious disgust, she rose to get a plate of food, leaving it to her husband to explain her somewhat uncharacteristic outburst. John O'Connor said his wife was upset because they wanted to retire to Arizona, and a Gore win meant they'd have to wait another four years. O'Connor, the former Republican majority leader of the Arizona State Senate and a 1981 Ronald Reagan appointee, did not want a Democrat to name her successor. Two witnesses described this extraordinary scene to Newsweek. Responding through a spokesman at the high court, O'Connor had no comment."

Where to begin?

How 'bout here:

"... they are total corporate creatures who have instructions to keep Republicans in office, it really is that simple."

Oh, darn! We, the vast right-wing conspiracy, have been found out!

"...disturbing private information..."

Disturbing information? I once saw a sign in the library: (the sign read) "Please don't disturb the information."

"... not alleged “journalism,” which is nothing more than plain propaganda..."

Now, now, you should not talk about Keith Olbermann that way.

"...howling of grief and mayhem..."

Yes, I hear it now. No, wait. It is just the neighbor's dog howling at the moon.

"...let’s just stop a second as sensitive, developed adults..."

Why start now?

"...horrifying country-killer Alito...."

Yes, I have heard that he was spawed from an eeeeevil race of country killers. I understand that this race is distantly related to the truly eeeevil "planet-killers."

"....stealing the election for George Bush."

Yes, they all donned masks, bundled the election into a large black bag, and sneaked out the back door when no one was looking.

"I personally do not think 9/11 would have ever happened if Gore had been President...."

Mmmmmkay.....

"...Gore would have got the memo."

And he invented the Internet, discovered Love Canal, and was the ghost-writer for "Love Story." I understand that he is working on a cure for adult acne!

"...went out and beat Kerry, 31 – 29%..."

What happend to the other 40%?

Great stuff, paradox. Very funny! Thanks!
