Yes, the human toll continues.
The republi-cons (or democrats for that matter) are deluding themselves if they think the Iraq Oil Law will ever bring peace or prosperity to America. And the Iraqi people will never stand for their natural resources being stolen from them.
I can't imagine being a soldier now days... 3rd or 4th tour, possibly in the field with injured, medicated, mentally unprepared troops. Risking the lives of others when your not 100%? What a way to die!
But wait, "bu$h will release billions in ‘contingency’ funds for Veterans." Yeah, and he'll turn around and blame the Democrats for the funding not being there already. How sweet of him!

"I believe we can succeed, and I believe the consequences of failure are catastrophic."
McCain, in view of your belief that we can succeed, just when might that be? How long? What are the consequences of failure? For whom? The Iraqis are already enduring catastrophic consequences for our occupation.
The occupation of Iraq needs to move front and center in this election along with other issues. Unfortunately, it has become a non-issue. I am sure it is important in the minds of those who are fighting and want nothing more than to return home.
"Then, maybe you can explain how we keep troops there without Americans being injured or harmed or wounded or killed."
Meanwhile, 3,921 men and women will not be coming home because people like McCain can't figure out how to accomplish the above (or don't care).
Posted by Judith at January 9, 2008 06:49 PMNSA Report reveals Vietnam War hoaxes, faked attacks:
"...probably the "most historically significant feature" of the declassified report was the retelling of the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident...a reported North Vietnamese attack on American destroyers that helped lead to president Lyndon Johnson's sharp escalation of American forces in Vietnam.
The author of the report "demonstrates that not only is it not true, as (then US) secretary of defense Robert McNamara told Congress, that the evidence of an attack was 'unimpeachable,' but that to the contrary, a review of the classified signals intelligence proves that 'no attack happened that night,'" AFP, 8 Jan 2007

"Think anybody in the presidential media pack will ask...John McCain what he thinks of the lastest confirmation of the fact that the war in which he was captured and tortured years ago was launched under precisely the same kind of knowingly false, manufactured pretext as the present war he supports so fervently?"
"Nah. They won't ask. And he doesn't care...he's not about to admit that tens of thousands of his comrades were slaughtered for a lie told on behalf of the same machine of dominion and loot that he wants to control..."

McCain's got a lot of company.
Posted by Pvt. Keepout at January 9, 2008 06:57 PMPvt. Keepout, thanks for the article.
So it is business as usual. Lie to achieve your objectives. Nothing really changes does it? No wonder people think 9/11 was an inside job. The thought that these people never faced accountability is maddening.
I've said it before, but one would think McCain would have a feeling of repugnance towards war. He seems to embrace it.
Posted by Judith at January 9, 2008 08:05 PMWhat about Bloomberg? The article today says he's obsessed with data. Any analysis of the Iraq data would scream "Get the hell out!", no? If Bloomberg runs on a peace platform he will win.
Posted by howard hughes blues at January 10, 2008 01:55 AMIf John MaCain does manage to be the Last Republican slouching and shambles forth to do battle with whatever Democratic candidate prevails, Dengre over at the Big Orange has a recovered diary that requires our attention.
From the start, McCain worked overtime to keep a lid on the most damaging aspects of the Abramoff scandal and slow-walk the investigation.
He also has suppressed a literal mountain of evidence—over 750,000 pages of documents related to Jack Abramoff, his work and his connections in and out of government.
Only about 8,000 pages of these documents have been released.
I've seen this topic diaried several times before, but it always seems to drift away without effect. Even IF MaCain falls before he Might of Mitt or slips on the slime trail of Rupee G. or is smited by the Mighty Mike, this topic should be pursued by us DFAs on the blogosphere.
This issue is the perfect weapon to tarnish the already stained brand of the Republic Party. The ill-informed public already knows about Abramoff, the Dukester et al. If enough pressure could be brought to bear to force Mukasey's hand (RIGHT!) even more corrupt Congress Critters, including, I suspect, some Democratic bad apples (and good riddance) would see the sudden need to spend more TIME with the family. Besides that, it's long overdue to start cleaning the Augean stables. Put THIS one on the table Nancy, or STFU forever!
