"They want a hard-headed sense of their chances"
Ha-ha, Bloomclown won't run for prezlideterer unless he can get a handle on the likely "return" for his "investment". Running for national office as "bid'ness".
You go get get your "hard-headed" voter database analysis, Mister Wall Street Bid'nessman, for all the good it'll do ya. Twit.
Posted by euzoius at January 10, 2008 11:22 AMWhat has Bloomberg accomplished as Mayor of New York?
He's managed to keep himself popular amongst most of the natives. That's a feat.
And he's kept an almost invisible profile in the daily life of New Yorkers which is a massive breath of fresh air following "The Rudy Years".
I love him just for that.
But as president? I don't think so.
I don't know much about the guy, I will admit. But I say he's got a good chance to win the presidency. Remember Ross Perot. He got a lot of votes without being specific on any issues other than NAFTA. If Bloomberg would analyze the Iraq data, the computer would scream:"GET OUT NOW!" Regardless of what he's said about Iraq in the past, if he's a remotely rational human being he must realize we have to get out. If he would run on that platform, he would win.
Posted by howard hughes blues at January 10, 2008 11:33 AMwhen was the last successful third party run for the presidency (winning).
Posted by T2 at January 10, 2008 11:44 AMIf he runs as an Independent, who will benefit, GOP or Democrats?
Posted by Judith at January 10, 2008 11:46 AMWith a guaranteed billion dollars (or more) to spend, he could make the first 3rd party presidency a possibility.
I think Bloomie's got one big problem - he needs to answer to citizens why he wants to be President. Sen. Clinton has had this problem, if only because of the sexist media coverage she's gotten has been louder than her own statements.
I can't help but wonder what his denials, continuances, and on-again-off-again stands have in common with the presidential race in both parties. Over New Year's, when Obama's surge began to take place, he denied it. Now here we are again after Sen. Clinton wins New Hampshire. Or is it more closely tied to McCain's fall and rise?
Posted by idiosynchronic at January 10, 2008 11:55 AMHe will win, if he runs. The reason is not because he is a great man but because all of the GOP and Dem candidates are exceptionally weak and because a large percentage of Americans really despise both parties.
Posted by howard hughes blues at January 10, 2008 11:58 AMproblem is, he's already said multiple times that he isn't going to run. If he does, it's Flip-Flopperville for Bloomie. I think the public has had enough of "say whatever is convenient for the moment" pols.
Posted by T2 at January 10, 2008 12:16 PMt2,
particularly given that, to cast himself as a moderate, he'll have to disavow his past strong support for bush.
Posted by Turkana at January 10, 2008 12:23 PMMaybe I didn't make myself clear:
With a billion dollars, I could make my mother vote for JFK again. And believe that the sex, the drugs, the lies were all a lie perpetrated by sordid biographers.
This little flips are nothing.
Posted by idiosynchronic at January 10, 2008 12:55 PMI heard at least one news program say that he was waiting to decide whether Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama would win. Apparently, he indicated that he WOULD run if Hillary wins the nomination, but he will not run if Barack wins the nomination because he does not want to stand in the way of the first black president...but he has no problem running against the first female president...okay Bloomberg.
