"... it's the Republicans who are actually in real trouble..."
This was a song played by the Dance Band on the Titanic, right.
If I recall, the lead singer was a woman who claimed fame by virtue (?) of being humiliated on the international stage....and, oh yeah, she served a whole 1 and 1/2 terms in the US Senate, but alas no Executive experience and no Military experience and no Business experience -- as to the last, does a 100K futures option count as Business experience?
(Dare I say, the only woman who ever served in Government because her Husband got a BJ.)
Backing her up, I think, was a 1/2 term Senator who is an African-American. (Only if you are willing to overlook the fact that his Momther ia a Caucasian-American.)
His similarities to the lead singer are (were?) striking: no Military experience, no Executive experience and no Business experience...well, he did dabble in real estate.
In the chorus was a white guy who kept having to apologize for being...well, a white guy.
That dance band was so into "identity."
"... GOP will have to hold a mass séance to conjure up the spirit of Ronald Reagan."
Was not he the fellow that was so popular in the 80s? As I recall, he had a #1 hit in 49 states...was it 49? I think so.
Posted by Bagley at January 24, 2008 05:53 PMThe only candidate from either party who understands that once a republic is corrupted (and there can be no doubt the United States qualifies in spades) the only way to save it is to return it to it's Constitutional principals is Ron Paul.
The monetary policy we have lived under will invariably lead to economic collapse. The wind is blowing and the house of cards is shaking. Those who think that endless borrowing of money created out of thin air can go on infinatum is kidding themselves.
Our national debt is unpayable. The future burden of promised medicare and social security payments to the retiring baby boomers is gargantuan. And now that Wall Street bankers have defrauded the rest of the world's financial centers through the sale of bad paper, their promises ring hollow. Who wants to do business with a shyster?
Radical changes are necessary if the U.S. is to survive as anything but a third rate country with a third world standard of living. None of the corporate media favored candidates offer anything that approaches what needs to be done.
I don't expect Paul to win the nomination, as the Doctor's medicine is too bitter for most to swallow and multi-national corporations own the media and the politicians. But the patient is in dire straits. I guess it's time to call the mortician and make the final arrangements.
Posted by brisa at January 24, 2008 06:24 PMThese trolls are actually cute and fuzzy! If they post a pic I can put them on cuteoverload.com!
Not that the Dem Pres is a slam dunk, but I have faith that our community will rally behind whomever gets the nom, hyperbole notwithstanding.

Thank you. (You like me, you really like me!)
"... but I have faith..."
Ok. But do you have anything substantiative to say?
What is it open mic night?
snark, just clap politely and smile. Surely this place has bouncers?
Posted by iamcoyote at January 24, 2008 07:08 PMthe trolls are here to remind us that we are not dealing with rational beings.
Posted by Turkana at January 24, 2008 07:48 PMNo, they are here to get the attention they lack in their miserable lives.

Absolutely rational. (I observe that you are unable to refute my characterization of the Democratic candidates.)
"No, they are here to get the attention they lack in their miserable lives."
Say, Judith, do you have a kindly neighbor come over and water you twice a week. (Dumb as a houseplant.)
Thanks to TLC for the bandwidth.

What's that, my little philodendron?
I observe that you are unable to refute my characterization of the Democratic candidates.
Christ, stop! Stop it! My sides hurt!
You have the Mad King, idiot son of George, and his VAST experience. He was a fucked up kid (thanks Bar!), a real Top Gun (where he fucked us all over through desertion), a drug abusing alcoholic (stayed fucked up), owned businesses (which he fucked up), was Gubnor of Tex-ass (a fucked up place to begin with), and became pretzledent (where he ripped a hole in the Constitution and used it as a fuck toy). He also gets messages from gah-wah-duh (who tells him to blow the fuck out of the middle east). He is well experienced, as are all republi-cons, at fucking stuff up. It is their -the republi-con- political legacy, and precisely why no one really cares about experience as you republi-con tards define it.
Posted by phidipides at January 24, 2008 08:35 PM"Even Bob Shrum could beat these Republicans."
Uhhh, let's not put that one to the test. OK? Thanks.
Just because America peaked long, long before St. Ronnie doesn't mean his policies didn't suck, but he deserves no credit for inventing bad government.
Posted by Pvt. Keepout at January 24, 2008 09:18 PMWhoa, trolls. Get a grip. What Republicans fail to remember is that Shrub didn't campaign as a rigidly orthodox conservative, but as a "compassionate" one, ie. "I may have to call myself a conservative to get Republican votes, but I'll be a middle-of-the-road kind of guy like my dad." It was only after he was "elected" that the bait and switch became clear. If he'd campaigned the way he's governed, Dubya would never have been elected in the first place because the vote in Florida wouldn't have been close enough to steal. Eight disastrous years later, the Republican party has now convinced itself that enough of the country agrees with
their wingnut ideas that they can actually elect a president with them. As usual, they're blind, seeing only what they wish to see -- kinda like Shrub himself.
"Dead party walking.....seance conjuring the spirit of Reagan"-----That's funny stuff, thanks for the post.
The American electorate failed dismally in 2004, and there frankly is no realistic reason to "rely" upon it to see that invoking Reagan is not an answer or policy. Every Repub, for example, thinks that is all one needs to say to recieve their vote. Repubs will vote Repub, policy failure is irrelevant to them.
The polls consistently show McOld is very competitive and beats our fine Clinton Dynasty II. Those numbers are not going to "collapse" whatever our side wants to believe. The MSM is corrupt at worst and completely broken at best, they'll be putting their hand on the scale for McOld as well, that's not really in doubt.
Finally, we have come to learn that the majority of people in the country never inform themselves or ever come to the slightest understanding of the bare facts of a single critical issue facing the country. They watch the flickering TV, listen to the voice, look at the face and decide if they "like" the candidate.
Hence people who are found "unlikeable" lose. See the highly qualified and perfectly acceptable candidate Kerry in 2004. I'll let everyone apply these principles to the current situation, but the fact that the Repubs and their policies have objectively failed and damaged the nation severely will most assuredly not be the basis for the majority of votes cast in 2008.
We are not competent to vote on actual substance as a nation any longer. It's a flip of the coin.
Posted by euzoius at January 25, 2008 07:05 AMHence people who are found "unlikeable" lose.
So the perscription is to nominate a candidate based on likability? That's just dumbing yourself down to the level of the least common denominator. If you can't beat 'em join 'em?Screw that. If the dumb asses of this country see fit to elect McOld as the next president because they 'don't like' Hillary Clinton then this country gets what it deserves. I'm not gonna support someone I think would be a lesser president just because the moron's 'like' him/her.
