If I'm not mistaken Hume and Truman met in person at some later time and became fast friends!

Posted by paradox at February 9, 2008 08:38 PMWow, Britt Hume must be even older than I thought!

Posted by nance at February 9, 2008 11:29 PMI originally posted this on a thread at C&L about John McCain's offensive joke about Chelsea:
After the last few weeks, I am beginning to believe that many progressive/liberal websites have been infested with GOP rat-fuckers.
These trolls pretend to be Obama supporters while bashing Hillary with some of the vilest attacks, and if anyone defends her they attack and insult that person too.
The reason I believe that this is true is that these trolls don't seem interested in extolling the virtues of Obama, they just want to attack Hillary and her supporters. And their attacks not only rely on right-wing meme's, they don't sound like any liberals or progressives I've ever heard.
They sound like wingnuts, and they all use almost identical language, like they were repeating talking points. They rarely bash Bush or the GOP either.
If I am correct, it's a two-fer for the Rovians. They get to bash Hillary while pissing her supporters off at Obama.
I'm sure there are other trolls doing the opposite, pretending to be Hillary supporters while bashing Obama, but I haven't noticed any.
If it sounds farfetched, think about when that madrassa smear first appeared. They were trying to slime Obama while framing Hillary for doing it.
Let me make myself clear - I don't think every Obama supporter or every critic of Hillary is a GOP rat-fucker. And I am not blaming Obama for anything.
But looking through the comments on this thread alone there is more slime than I've ever seen in Left Blogostan. Look how many commenters have to make gratuitous slurs and insults on Hillary, Chelsea, and anyone defending them.
I first noticed it on another site when every time I tried to defend Hillary I was personally and rudely attacked by an alleged Obama supporter. I have been a regular denizen of Left Blogostan and I've been commenting for a couple years now, and I was never attacked as often or as viciously as I have the last few weeks.
But that was on threads that were basically discussions of the two candidates, and I assumed it was just over exuberance on the part of some Obama supporters. But this thread (and similar ones on other sites) doesn't concern Obama and is an issue of basic liberal orthodoxy (sexism = bad) and yet look at the venom being spewed.
Something for us to think about.
Posted by myiq2xu at February 10, 2008 12:05 AMI blogged this yesterday under the polite title "when someone gets pussy whipped the pussy does the whippping, ok?" Reading 'round the bloggosphere has been an interesting excercise in pure sexism and also adopted republican tropes that blame the victim for standing up for herself.

myiq2xu, there may be one or two attempting it – they’re easy to spot IMO, but I think you're letting the rest of the nasty Obamabots off the hook. Some of the worst comments I've seen are coming from people I know are not freepers. Irrational Hillary hate and misogyny on the left was there before she even began her campaign, it'll be there when it's over. I’m sure you’ve seen sexist comments about Pelosi and Condi, as well as Feinstein, and Cynthia McKinney?** The excuse is always that they didn’t vote the way someone wanted, or they weren’t tough enough against Bush, and the comments were tolerated because Bushco’s the bigger enemy and we need to stick together. But look at the fury from people you know whenever someone complains about the sexist attacks – it’s not simple pooh-poohing, it’s rage. How many times have you seen someone snarl “you’re calling me a misogynist if I vote for Obama???” How many times have you seen the old-guard feminists, the ones who fought to get us where we are now, thrown under the bus because they’ve endorsed Clinton? Yes, it would be comforting to believe that the hate is coming from freepers and not from the left, but don’t fool yourself. When I saw the number one diary at dKos this week, “Real Women Don’t Need to be Pandered To,” it finally sunk in. You can’t address a problem if people don’t want to believe there’s a problem at all.
This primary has opened my eyes, that’s for sure. I never believed Clinton would win it; I’m very surprised she’s gotten as far as she has done. I know people are saying that the more they see of Obama, the more people like him, but I wonder if it’s actually the more people witness the relentless attacks on the Clintons, the less likely they want to spend the next four years going through the same shit we had to go through in the ‘90s. I don’t blame them. It was a disgusting time. I think Obama will win the nom, and I hope he wins the presidency, because we need to reverse the damage the Republicans have caused if we’re to save our country. But I no longer believe we’re the good guys, we’re just the other side. And that realization is a good thing. As my friend told me last night, “the claim that we’re the ‘reality-based community’ has always been a conceit.” She’s right. I’m embarrassed that I didn’t see it before this, but knowing and accepting it sure makes my life a whole lot more “reality-based” than before. There's no such thing as good and bad, there's just winning and losing, and to the winners, go the spoils.
**I’m not saying that they haven’t done things that deserve scorn; I’m talking about the sexist language used to express that scorn.
Since a recent poll says that over 70% of Democrats like both of the current candidates and will vote for either one that gets the nomination, you can almost be assured that a large percentage of the Hillary bashers are GOP trolls.
Call them out.
Posted by Moon at February 10, 2008 09:00 AMMoon, I think we're talking apples and oranges, here. If your poll is among the public at large, not just bloggers, it makes sense, considering the impressive turnout for both candidates at the primaries and caucuses. But it doesn't necessarily point to your conclusion that it's rightwing trolls, especially considering that a lot of the worst offenders are confirmed lefties, people we all know. You can believe it, if it makes you feel better about your fellow progressives, but I don't anymore.

And that was the biggest (even behind the IRaq War vote) reason I never tuned into the Hillary campaign very seriously before my last candidate Edwards dropped out. I feared and still fear a repeat of faux media created outrage and scandals including but not limited to travelgates and whitewaters never mind the gazillions of tax dollars wasted on Kenneth Star/Scaife panty draw sniffing bushit YOU know all the crap that same Villagers in the media swarmed to in such a frenzied fashion, which was markedly absent during the Bushit years (I'm still wondering what Jimmy Jeff was doing at the WH. Now don't get me wrong I don't really care what they were doing in their personal lives it just that he created a whole persona and fake name/profession and that is what I really wanted to know about...why the need to do that???). Never mind all the real scandals that occurred that were totally ingnored.
Having said that, I decided to support Hillary mainly because I realized that this would most likely happen to the Democratic nominee no matter who it was (thinking how Gore was Gored, Dean and the scream-and subsequent reference to his mental stability/soundness, Kerry swiftboated, Edwards feminized and ignored...the list is endless and the media track record of how they've done it has been well documented by others). And that is really the sad story here.
I don't think Hillary's going to win the nomination either. Obama certainly has significant momentum...if he wins the nomination I just hope he will sustain it right up through the election in November...but I'm not too convinced that our media is capable and willing to resist the temptation to do their jobs and cover the candidates and election fairly or appropriately...hell were already back at square one with the Matthews drooling/fawning of Straight talking maverick manly man and tough guy St. McCain annointment by them. Next we'll hear how great he looks in a codpiece, how he radiates cigar-aqua velva smell, and how his shoulders are to die for becaue they are big enough to land an aircraft on... which couldn't be further from the truth.
emal, I have no doubt they'll go after Obama, but the last few weeks have proven that while sexism is tolerated, racism is not, even manufactured charges of racism. Remember Imus? He was attacked not for the 'hos, but for the "nappy-headed" bit. Sure, the usual suspects will try it, and yes, there'll be dog-whistles, and the usual suspects will bark, but any overt racism will backfire, I think. The Villagers' most effective attacks will come from another direction, I believe. Probably Rezko, but they'll make up other stuff as well. Hillary's campaign has made too many mistakes, and though it's annoying and infuriating, Obama has been very good at capitalizing on them. As much as his zealots deny it, he's pretty good at Rovian tactics, and even better at calculating, as are his supporters. It'll take everything he has to counter what's coming, especially if McCain's the nominee.

If one pays attention, Republicans have used attacks against the opposition for two reasons: 1. it works, 2. it deflects the weakness of their candidate. We all remember how Al Gore was vilified and made fun of for comments he never made, how stiff he was, and the list goes on and on. Gore stuck to issues, and that was "boring", while Bush campaigned to bring morality to the WH, even though most people could have cared less about Clinton's bj. The Obama supporters are using the same tactics as the Republicans for the same reason, Obama is not as good a candidate as Hillary and they must bring her into the mud for Obama to look good.
