Prediction: several years from now, the price for fruit, vegetables (and even meat) at the supermarket will go up by either 300 to 500 percent.

I watched "60 Minutes" awhile ago, to catch the segment about the Siegelman hit job orchestrated by the neo-Nazi Karl Rove, and ended up catching the segment about honey bees dying.

Most people are unaware of how important honey bees are in keeping the price of food low. They pollinate, with bumper crops produced by the presence of more honey bees pollinating. Honey bees, however, are mysteriously disappearing around the world.

One of the beekeepers interviewed believes it is the use of certain new pesticides that is causing this decline in the honey bee population. Within the past ten years, farmers have started dusting their crops with "neo-nicotinic" pesticides, supposedly less harmful to everything and everyone. But since their usage began, honey bee populations have started declining or been decimated. The beekeeper described the four effects on crop pests cited by the producer of "neo-nicotinic" pesticides as coinciding exactly with what beekeepers are experiencing in their honey bee hives. In other words, it may just be that in trying to eradicate the crop pests, farmers are also eradicating the honey bees necessary to pollinate their crops. Crazy, eh?

The Bush administration's Department of Agriculture spokesman interviewed by "60 Minutes" hemed and hawed and literally didn't answer the question asked about whether these "neo-nicotinic" pesticides are wiping out honey bee colonies. Why? Well, once again, the Bush Agriculture spokesman obviously cares more about the profits of the company making the "neo-nicotinic" pesticide than they do about we consumers who will eventually end up paying much, much more for fruit, vegetables and meat if the honey bees populations continue to be decimated as much as they already have been.
