the prison-industrial complex is bankrupting this country just like the military-industrial complex
ending the "war on drugs" is a necessary first step
Posted by Gay Veteran at February 28, 2008 10:22 AMit wouldn't hurt to start locking up the bulk of repuke party office holders..I wouldn't mind paying for that..

Good post & obsevations. Thanks. Chris Bowers noticed too:
"Back on Christmas, Matt wrote an article called Five Untouchable Symptoms (http://www.openleft.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=2924) detailing five major problems facing the country that even leading Democrats rarely, if ever, address. Four of those five problems actually revolved around only two issues: America's extraordinarily high levels military spending and incarceration rates.
While this is only 2% of the public sector economy, like military spending and corporate welfare, it is also not an area of spending that is ever seriously questioned by any major politician."

Maybe big-time, serious journalists will discuss these issues with our candidates. Assuming, of course, their patrons first grant permission.
What is this...a hit job on unions. Defense industry is a very union intensive industry or are those union workers the bad ones, you know the ones that vote Republican, support Republican causes.

thanks for focusing on what really matters. but to answer your question, straight up federal jobs programs could pay just as much, while costing the treasury and society incalculably less.
