The dismantling of Russian democracy started almost from the beginning, when U.S. advisers got on board to help the wildly unpopular Boris Yeltsin win a second term. What they taught the Russians is that you can have elections that are shams by using control of the media to control the narrative. Yeltsin's advisers were very appreciative, but didn't really want to give full credit to their American friends such as former Pete Wilson aide George Gorton. But they learned their lessons well. Let's not forget that Putin was Yeltsin's hand picked successor.
