what does anyone think of a brokered convention that nominates al gore after the first round..anyone really think it possible?
Posted by dennis at March 27, 2008 02:07 AMNo but imagine if McCain really is beginning to show signs of senility running up to the republican convention. That political mayhem would be interesting to watch.
Posted by Greup at March 27, 2008 02:46 AMOr how about Condi as McCain's VP?

Posted by dennis at March 27, 2008 03:19 AMWhy is the Rev. Wright canceling all of his appearances?

Re “Clinton Says She ‘Misspoke’ About Dodging Sniper Fire” (news article, March 25):
Unlike Hillary Rodham Clinton, I actually did have to run from military aircraft, head tucked, under threat of sniper fire in Bosnia. But it was in 1994-95, not 1996, when Mrs. Clinton visited Tuzla Air Base.
Mrs. Clinton’s claims, and more recent remarks that she misspoke, not only show how far she’s willing to go to get elected, but also how her view of United States policy has been colored by her run for the presidency.
Mrs. Clinton seems to have forgotten that the war in Bosnia had ended months earlier when she visited Tuzla in March 1996. The base she arrived at had been secured for four months by the United States military, which had been sent as part of the United States-backed Dayton peace accords. The peace agreement had been signed by warring factions in December 1995.
Clearly, her visit several months into this peace, with her daughter, Chelsea, and several celebrities in tow, was supposed to be a symbol that peace had taken root in Bosnia.
It’s one thing for Mrs. Clinton to “misspeak.” It’s more troubling — and a test of her true preparedness for office — for the candidate to totally ignore a major United States policy triumph that took years to broker and somehow claim involvement by inventing a story of sniper fire, while the truth is that she visited a peaceful airfield and met children on the tarmac.

for sh*ts and giggles, how can someone forget or misspeak about being shot at???
Posted by anthony at March 27, 2008 03:58 AMHey anthony, nice to seeya. I hear that what she said was actually spoken by a person introducing her in Tuzla and she took it for truth. I give her a pass for this one...an embellishment, and remember I'm not for either one. Now the military is getting upset that she inferred that they would place her and Chelsea in danger in a situation like this. They wouldn't have landed with foreknowledge. That bothers me, but hey, it's a campaign. They're known for exaggerations and embellishments, it's part of the game.
Posted by peter at March 27, 2008 04:17 AMpure conjecture here, but peter, maybe he's just tired. tired of being railed on, demonized, or being falsely accused of things.
or, maybe he's just enjoying his retirement...
Posted by anthony at March 27, 2008 04:22 AMsorry bout the trifecta post here, but could you see lieberman as his vp choice? in an attempt to steal some 'dem,' and jewish voters???
after all, they seem joined at the hip nowadays...

More like joined at the 'lip' nowadays...
Posted by Seven of Six at March 27, 2008 06:09 AMNaw, he's well placed in the senate. There's already a firm group of McCain Democrats, Smokin Joe isn't needed for them, and anyway it didn't work for Democrats too well. I'm hearing Rob Portman a lot.
Posted by peter at March 27, 2008 06:15 AMThe American public will once again get what it deserves if John McCain is elected president because the Democratic nominee is painted as a serial exaggerator.
Sound familiar.
Hillary Clinton did not say they were under fire. She said there was the threat of sniper fire.
I'm embarrassed for the people pushing this story while in the same breath demanding a focus on the real issues like ending the occupation of Iraq.
Posted by snark at March 27, 2008 06:17 AM
it's being pushed because of obama's numbers in pennsylvania..they know what happens if he loses big there
I'm embarrassed for the people pushing this story...
Christ snark, I was praying this story was dead... who's keeping this crap alive?

Check the current Open Thread.
Posted by snark at March 27, 2008 06:46 AMAnd that that video with mock explosions added to the footage of Clinton in Tuzla is a slap in the face to the men and women who served there in that operation.
Posted by snark at March 27, 2008 06:55 AMget real snark...you must have seen the videos of the numerous speeches where she used this line....her clear, unambiguous inference was that she was flying into into a hot war zone and was under direct threat of sniper fire....that simply was not the case, and that is obvious. Who pushed this story? The Media, the blogs...or perhaps Hillary, who repeated it every speech she made until it was proved to be baloney? But for once I agree with peter, in the grand scheme of politics a little lie once in a while is part of the game. But when you are caught red handed, just say so. Don't give me some "sleep deprivation" bull. And while we are on the subject of Hillary Clinton. She'd apparently walk out of a church where Rev. Wright was preaching, but sees nothing wrong going to prayer meetings with Man/Dog Sex expert Rick Santorum. If I saw him in my church, I'd leave immediatly (after shooting him the finger). If I had a church, that is.

Is that not what I wrote? Under the threat of sniper fire. Not running off the tarmac under fire. Not dodging sniper fire. Under the threat of sniper fire. That is what I said and that is what she said.
I don't really give a shit who anyone chooses to go to church with T2.
If that's how you want to decide who to support for president go right ahead.
apparently, in her explanations, she 'fabricated,' more in explaining her answers. she's tried to make it go away, but three to four different speeches echoing the same story is hard to discount for fatigue.
who she associates with spiritually is now a concern due to her attempts to rehash the rev wright issue. she really needs to let this drop, as her relationship with the "family," will gain traction. i'm sure if faced with rev. wright vs. those identified in the "family," and the "family's" history. i'm sure rev. wright wins this one hands down...
btw, saw the great debaters last night. we are kinda behind over here... awesome flick that. it should be a must see for every american history class and civics class... explains plenty, concerning the anger felt by african americans.
the line starting: "in tx they lynch negroes," is pretty fcukin powerful.
oops, they still teach those (history and civics)right?

Thank goodness I deleted that bookmark weeks ago. Now that they're a 527, they've gotten as dead boring as a rightwing spittle-site.
Posted by iamcoyote at March 27, 2008 07:24 AMI see Condi Rice as VP more then Joe Lieberman. Joe only reinforces John's weak points. Condi would appeal to the base and to the "I'm not racist"'s in the party. But I think this ticket wouldn't fly with the rest of the electorate - too much connection with the previous administration's disasters.
Sarah Palin is the only GOP VP candidate that really scares me.
Both the Wright and Tuzla smears are piss pots being sold as more than what they are. I refuse to pay either more attention. Period.
Posted by idiosynchronic at March 27, 2008 07:25 AMOh - you mean someone's finally, playing the "Family" story association that was authored last year or the year before in Harper's?
It's about fucking time. But as usual, those who should get their political vampire selves fried by the direct bright light of public inquiry are being ignored, in favor of trashing someone who is currently politically expedient. Fry the Family, and let the chips fall, but only if others are tarred and feathered besides Clinton.
Posted by idiosynchronic at March 27, 2008 07:33 AMtell it to Hillary, snark. I've heard enough. There was NO threat or they wouldn't have let a little kid out there, much less the president's wife.
Posted by T2 at March 27, 2008 07:40 AMI think the pilot clarified the story once and for all.
Posted by Judith at March 27, 2008 08:11 AMidio:
i had no idea this story is old news. if so, it is rather suspect to throw this out now. just as the 24hr loop of a 3-6 year old sermon is old news and disengenuous.
both are "exposed," for political purposes only. a pox on both their houses for this one. it is unfortunate that the only way to "win," the presidency is to throw your opponent under a bus, drag him/ her for miles then piss on them to put out the fire.
when did arguing differences in issues go to hell in a hand-basket???
Posted by anthony at March 27, 2008 08:12 AMjudith...what did the pilot say?
Posted by dennis at March 27, 2008 08:15 AMIdio, Sarak Palin...really, isn't she something, a rising star and pregnant with her fifth child. How about Bobby Jindal? Either one would be great...Bobby's a bit young, maybe next time, he's a superstar in the making.
Posted by peter at March 27, 2008 08:54 AMi dont know about that peter. he isn't "lily white," enough for the die hard repubs. if they freak out over a middle name, what do you think they'd say about someone of indian dissent?
Posted by anthony at March 27, 2008 08:57 AMRepublicans in Louisiana thought highly of him. If any Republicans were going to have problems with him...it's Louisiana folks. His first legislative sessions were well received Anthony.
Posted by peter at March 27, 2008 09:01 AMis it coincidence that all hell broke loose in Iraq right after Dick Cheney paid al Maliki a visit?
Posted by T2 at March 27, 2008 09:25 AMi dunno about that, la is my home state. david duke still has sway in metarie. westwego is not that much different. st.tammany parish remains antebellum in its thought processes. i think they would've voted for anyone other than kathleen. cynical yes, but i KNOW my home state. this is the state, new orleans is the city, where my high school gym teacher, coach vitter (dunno if there is a relation with david) but anyway, he could not pronounce the names of the vietnamese students, so he assigned them numbers. they were at the bottom of the attendance sheet. 1-- here, 2-- here, 3-- here, etc. this is my state. this is the state where someone white rear ended my mother and someone white in a passing car LEANED OUT AND YELLED ha ha ni**er. my city, jeff parish sheriff dept. fired shotgun blasts over the heads of katrina victims walking over the g.n.o. bridge to get to algiers, where flooding was minimal to non existent. that, peter is my state. where rex is an all white crewe and zulu remains all black. where i was called leroy, because it was the "typical black," name. bitter, yes, angry, yes, but i still claim it as my home. it's where my family lives, is buried, was married, was baptized, where i was born. no, i guess i never will get over being pissed. nope, not one bit...
Dennis, the pilot said that there was no snipper fire or threat of snipper fire. If there had been, they would never have landed the plane with the President's Wife aboard. He was upset that anyone would think he would land a plane under those conditions.
