To add to the food shortage crisis, wars over water will be next.
Posted by Seven of Six at April 11, 2008 10:49 AMVery clever Mr. Zoellick.. calling on the Bush administration to spend money on a "New Deal"
I despair for anyone waiting for that money.
Posted by Dilapidus at April 11, 2008 11:07 AMMcSame: "$500 million for the World Food Program? My friends, that sounds pretty expensive, where's the gub'mint sposed to get that from?
You know what that demonic, lib'rul UN will do with every cent---spread anti-Americanism!" (Pinhead Majority applauds)
Advisor Phil (whispering): "Johnny, don't fergit to say No Bailouts....."
McSame: "No bailouts, my friends, No Bailouts! (deafening applause) Thank you, my friends!"
McSame, leaving podium: "Man, I'm starvin'! Where're we eatin' tonight, Phil? At Super Steak? I give what I can't finish to my dog!"
Posted by euzoius at April 11, 2008 11:52 AMconverting grains like corn to ethanol is insane, but is the natural consequence of this country having wasted the past 30 years in regards to research to overcome our addiction to oil
and of course Dear Leader has done nothing for the past 7 years.....well, besides invading Iraq which caused oil to skyrocket (good for his oil buddies)
Posted by Gay Veteran at April 11, 2008 12:02 PMI've always been uncomfortable with the idea of using food to fuel our cars. Seems pretty obvious the problems this would lead to.
Posted by CG at April 11, 2008 12:36 PMGV is right about ethanol. I've owned farmland for quite awhile, and my people have changed from growing crops for eating to crops for the ethanol plants that are springing up all over the heartland.
Haven't had the "poor harvests" mentioned, though.
Posted by Muck at April 11, 2008 12:59 PMGay Veteran;
How can you say that dear leader has not done anything? The invasion of Iraq was to capture the 2nd largest oil deposite in the world. That spreading democracy talk is just a "talk". Of course the things did not go well because of poor planning and ineptness of his administration. Wouldn't you agree that getting the oil that is already there is better than producing it from other sources?
What if the dear leader was successful in establishing an america friendly regime in Iraq that sold plenty of oil to us? The prices at the pump would have been half than what they are now and you would be a happy camper.
Posted by suresh at April 11, 2008 02:41 PMChildren will grow up with diminished IQ so some pig in the USA can run his Cadillac Escalade?
Posted by bob h at April 12, 2008 05:35 AMGood job for covering this issue. Has our cable news spent any time covering this issue? NO. Waiting for a brilliant book on this issue to come out, heard the author on BBC, Stuffed and Starved: Markets,Choice and the Battle for the Worlds Food System. , Raj Patel.
Posted by stellaa at April 12, 2008 07:20 AMpretty much, bob h.

WTF?
really, WTF? the war of aggression against Iraq was a war crime from the very beginning, and every second we stay in Iraq is a war crime
so no I would not be a "happy camper"
Posted by gay veteran at April 12, 2008 01:55 PMLet's see. It started with Clinton and NAFTA...
I bet Shillary doesn't claim the problem from the administration she ran in the 90's...but it still had its start there.
