That's a tough one, Mary. I usually ask a politics hater to come up with an issue that means a lot to the person. It could be anything from gas prices to marijuana decriminalization. Then I'll explain why it's important to vote for candidate X. It's literally like talking to a child. What really matters more than who your representitives are?
I'm thrilled that your friend reacted to Colbert in that way. Great idea, Mary.
Posted by Jeff Dinelli at April 17, 2008 02:02 AMI am taking an advanced course in waterboarding so I can make the local republicans more aware of their politics by trying it on them.
Who would have guessed that Colbert is a devout Catholic and teaches Sunday school in real life?
Trivia I just saw on ABC news:
1. Russia's new president is 5'3", as was Krushev.
2. Putin is 5'5", as was Stalin
3. Napoleon was really 5'6", but his enemies claimed he was only 5'2" which the press of the time went along with.
4. Osama Bin Laden is 6'4", but appears shorter when he is bending over laughing his ass off at Bush.
I met a friend in a bar a couple of weeks ago. She knew nothing but the lies. When I hear these lies I do my best beat them to death with the truth. She was just spewing too many for me to squish at one time. Anyway, when she got to the part of her fairytale which said, "George Bush is bad because he's a liberal" and her definition of liberal is basically the definition of fascism I just had to laugh in her face and walk away. I've seen her twice since and have taken to shunning her. An empty head is easier to deal with then one filled with the cultivated ignorance of the Neocons.

i see that both hilary and barak plan to investigate gwb and his cronies once they get to office.
what happens if they find criminal acts occurred in the white house and the administration? i mean definitively find they occurred. can they then be prosecuted? i read somewhere that a new law insulates them, is this also true?
if no consequence for their actions, then why spend the money to investigate, besides the satisfaction of proving what we all know.

Posted by dennis at April 17, 2008 05:37 AMMost people I know are, "...bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."
The rest are no hope for them, conservative republi-cons.
The rest are no hope for them, conservative republi-cons.
Botched last sentence. Where's the grammar nazi's?
Should read: There is no hope for the rest of them, they are conservative republi-cons.
SoS,
If you're so down on Charlie and George for focusing on shit like the "bitter" comment why do you feel compelled to keep bringing it up?
Posted by snark at April 17, 2008 07:15 AMTrying to not get them to jump ship and vote Repug if Obama's the nom. And it ain't easy!
Posted by LuigiDaMan at April 17, 2008 07:42 AMshould barack get the nomination..and i hope he doesn't..george and charlie will have done him a great service..because that's only a sampling of what they will have in store for him..obamamites are very goofy neophytes..or something..barack ain't ready...she seemed to be in a zone..she was pretty damn cool and collected..in a pretty tense atmosphere..he wasn't..that's a fact
Posted by dennis at April 17, 2008 07:43 AMYou Hillary supporters: Is use of word Bitter damaging to our country or spending 12 Billion dollars a month in Iraq is? Are words of pastor White are making us less safe than the 4000 soldiers dead in Iraq with no appraent gain in making us more secure?
I think Hillary supporters are acting same way as the Republican neo-cons by making issue of things that do not matter and not talking about the real issues. The sad thing is Hillary is so good about every issue that she does not have to resort to Republican tactics. Now you guys know why she is behind. People are tired of the Republican tactics for last 8 years. Obama comes out as a breath of fresh air. He showed that again in debate yesterday when he refused to criticize Hillary on her Bosnia sniper fire story.

Because what was supposed to be such a "gaffe" has turned into such a non-issue. Democrats aren't falling for it... well, except for Hillary fans.

Posted by dennis at April 17, 2008 08:52 AMIs use of word Bitter damaging to our country or spending 12 Billion dollars a month in Iraq is?
1) Considering it's the Obama people who brought it up, ask them.
2) It's dishonest to try to pin Hillary supporters with the accusation that they have made the choice between a talking-heads-fueled scandal and Bush's failures.
3) You must think we have a whole hell of a lot of power over Fox News to think we can tell them what to cover.
4) The setup of the false choice to make the accusation of Hillary using Republican tactics perfectly illustrates the Republican tactics used by Obama supporters over and over these past few months.
5) Though I haven't bothered with the "bitter" stuff except to joke about it, I understand that the real issue is not "bitter" at all, but the "cling to" portion that characterizes rural PA traditions of churchgoing, hunting, as angry responses to lying politicians, rather than as cherished traditions. Obama and his surrogates understandably chose to highlight the "bitter" portion, since he can make a case for that, whereas the "cling to" bit makes him sound like he's calling those folks dumb hicks. In fact, he did try once to say that he was talking about "cling" in some kinda bible sense and made himself look even stupider, so he changed to "bitter."
SoS, you said "except for Hillary fans." Although some of them have taken it up, don't you think you're painting all of us with the issue that's mostly been pushed by the talking heads? We have no control over what the "news" guys keep drilling on.
Posted by iamcoyote at April 17, 2008 08:59 AM...don't you think you're painting all of us with the issue...
So now you admit you are a Hillary fan? Didn't you deny a day or two ago that you were not a Hillary supporter?
Posted by Seven of Six at April 17, 2008 09:16 AMSoS - fan and supporter are two different words, aren't they?
Posted by iamcoyote at April 17, 2008 09:23 AMSoS, you said "except for Hillary fans."
Yeah, I didn't have to leave that in.
Just a dig, a mild poke at those who think Obama is the devil and Hillary has this golden halo over her head.

Alert the media! Maybe this will bump Obama's tragic defeat last night from the headlines!
Posted by iamcoyote at April 17, 2008 10:20 AMIf they complain about the cost of gas, I tell them that the reason the economy is gone to hell is that voters like them voted for Bush because he is a person they would like to have a beer with. And if they are the social conservatives, I tell them that they got their head up where the sun don't shine. Then I smile and talk about the weather.

WIKI: "Although by his own account he was not particularly political before joining the cast of The Daily Show, Colbert is a self-described Democrat.[61][62] In an interview at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard Institute of Politics, he stated that he has "no problems with Republicans, just Republican policies."[63] He is also a practicing Roman Catholic,[13] as well as a Sunday school teacher.[64][65][66]"
Have you bakery tossers ever seen that classic pie fight scene in "The Great Race"?
I'll bet coyote looks cute with lemon meringue dripping down her face.
I was unavoidedly detained.
Uh huh. That busty blond from the local tavern again? You're soooo easy, TIKI!

...Wow! This is really scary. Do you have ESP or as "some people" around here have alluded to, are you really a witch?
"You devil! Lemme guess - you've got some etchings you wanna show me? Mwah!"
...Actually, I do have a porn collection which is etched on DVDs. They were a big hit with the busty barmaid!
"How'd he hit 'em?"
...Alot further since the glaciers melted.
Hey 7, glad to see that you somehow escaped Sheriff Joe's dragnet, or are you out on bail?.
He's gonna do alot of damage if he keeps this shit up. He detained my palm tree trimmers in Guadalupe, and I need them for the annual June 1st trimming!
Do they cut palm trees on the pink chain gang?
