I watched them both, and your observations are excellent, Mary.

The only thing missing on Colbert was a grand entrance by McCain walking behind the GOP mascot in a red white and blue clownsuit, using a copy of the constitution to pick up the pachyderm poop.

Does anyone know what has happened to River Bend? She has done no reporting here for months?

Posted by Judith at April 18, 2008 04:50 AM

has anyone seen the video of obama supposedly giving hillary the finger ...and if so..what do you think?

Posted by dennis at April 18, 2008 04:58 AM

I watched it from 3 angles and it seemed he did. This should cause him big problems.

Posted by Kefa at April 18, 2008 05:44 AM

Haven't heard a thing about it. When/where was this and does anyone have a link?

Posted by CG at April 18, 2008 05:48 AM

OK, nevermind the link. I found it on youtube. That's hilarious.

Posted by CG at April 18, 2008 05:50 AM

i don't really know if he did it..and i think it's impossible to know..but it does look like it..but there is a guy behind him who reacts as if he knew what he did...if he did ..it speaks volumes about him....volumes

Posted by dennis at April 18, 2008 06:03 AM

Actually, I heard that if you play the audio of that clip backwards it say, "Partisanship is dead, partisanship is dead!"

Others claim to have heard, "Hillary's a bitch, Hillary's a bitch!"

Personally, I think it's too garbled to tell.

Posted by snark at April 18, 2008 06:11 AM

If this was Clinton ....accident or not it would be on Drudge or RawStory or HuffPost or Kos so fast it would make your head spin.

Posted by Kefa at April 18, 2008 06:24 AM

Missed the Colbert Report...will hopefully catch the re-run.

As for the other clip...not certain about the flip the bird...but within the larger context of this part of the speech, the point he was making was about how Washington -Hillary, and the media are all about the gotcha style politics and he's about change and being above it all and talking about issues. Now, I agree I hate the gotcha style non-issue related style of politics too. ( I also agree with him when he talked about how it was 45 minutes into the debate until there was some substantial issue in the debate raised -the war, the economy, etc). But when he discusses this he then definitely proceeds to do exactly what he rails against and says he'll change by saying Hillary was in her element and that she got her digs in and she sticks the knife and twist it(complete with his own hand gesture of such an action-very immature and hypocritical of him to do). This is all done with a slight half smile as he attacks her...and the adoring crowd goes wild...egging him on in this style of politics. The hypocrisy it burns.

Jeebus Senator Obama, if you're all about bringing change to this "style" of politics then please stop. Please don't then proceed to do the very things you complain about your opponent and Washington of doing. I just can't stand the double standard and inconsistency. And again imo, he at this point just needs to stop talking... because the more he talks the more juvenile, hypocritical, and unprepared I find him. I'm less than impressed with him lately...sigh.

Posted by emal at April 18, 2008 06:53 AM

Judith did you feel the earthquake?

Posted by JohnT at April 18, 2008 06:53 AM

Fuck, the man can't scratch his face... reminds me of the "Seinfield" episode when George kept thinking the waitress was giving him the finger.
Snark is right on this one!

Posted by Seven of Six at April 18, 2008 07:03 AM

... because the more he talks the more juvenile, hypocritical, and unprepared I find him. I'm less than impressed with him lately...sigh.

I must admit to feeling that way myself.

Posted by snark at April 18, 2008 07:10 AM

John T., I slept through it and only became aware of the quake on the morning news. Evidently, it was felt 300 miles away, which is rather disconcerning.

Stepford Wife Lauri will be co-hosting the Today Show next Tuesday. Matt Lauder is wetting his pants. NBC hearts Laura.

Posted by Judith at April 18, 2008 07:11 AM

i wouldn't dismiss it so lightly...if you look close..he may well be doing it..and if so he is an immature arrogant prick..i myself think the guy is a bitter man

Posted by dennis at April 18, 2008 07:11 AM

Dennis, "bitter" is a good description.

Posted by Judith at April 18, 2008 07:14 AM

sos...you guys are really truly wearing blinders..completely

Posted by dennis at April 18, 2008 07:14 AM

If Hill was President fo 8 years as she is bragging why is she allowed to run again?

Posted by JohnT at April 18, 2008 07:44 AM

I don't think he was giving the finger, but the snide arrogance and the nasty smile and knifing pantomime (what a pussy if he thought she was twisting the knife with her fairly mild pushback), totally reminded me of Bush. It made me think of the one debate where Obama took credit for the explosion of voter registrations, as if the last 7 years had nothing to do with it. Now I know why his followers act the way they do. The nastiness comes from him directly and he's proud of it. His wife is just as smug, if not more so.

His arrogance will be the downfall of the Dems in November if he's the nominee, and I blame not only him, but Dean and the others who allowed this debacle to happen in the first place. If my state looks like it's going for the Dem, I'm only voting for my local people and writing in Edwards. Though Obama deserves to lose and be vilified and run out of town on a rail, and the Dems deserve to lose for being so stupid doing this shit during the most crucial election in the country, We the People don't deserve what a McCain prez will do.

Posted by iamcoyote at April 18, 2008 07:47 AM

JohnT,

Are you really that bad at making an argument?

Posted by snark at April 18, 2008 07:48 AM

Anyone wanna make a bet?

I'm willing to wager that any number of pro-Obama sites will have Youtube edits of all the previous occasions when Obama has scratched his face using his middle finger up and running by the end of the day.

Posted by snark at April 18, 2008 07:53 AM

Um wait a minute...Clinton rulz catch-22. You see her experience as the First Lady doesn't count as anything (and therefore Obama has more legislative experience) but at the very same time her experience as the First Lady was significant, and counts as much as her being President so she shouldn't be allowed to run again.

Posted by emal at April 18, 2008 07:54 AM

http://youtube.com/watch?v=pNO58WdUptU

All I see is a guy scratching his face with 'two'fingers.

Posted by Judith at April 18, 2008 07:59 AM

Finally watching the Colbert Report...it's great...I enjoyed Edwards "The edWord" bit he was terrific. Hillary was funny...solving and fixing problems, and with the "call me anytime even at 3 am" bit..Obama next...I liked the "on notice board-distractions" bit....they all did great.

Posted by emal at April 18, 2008 08:01 AM

"Dems deserve to lose for being so stupid doing this shit during the most crucial election in the country"

Iamcoyote, that is precisely why I have tuned out on this election. I cannot believe that we are where we are as a Party, when we should be burying McCain about now. What is it with this Party? We run people like Dukais and Kerry and wonder why we lose. Now, in the most important election in our live time, we come up with Hillary and Obama, two of the most divisive people we could find. Don't be too sure McCain won't sit in the Oval Office in January because of the stupid Democrats.

Posted by Judith at April 18, 2008 08:09 AM

snark I and others have made the argument that Cheney can't run again. I only had a question about Hill.

Posted by JohnT at April 18, 2008 08:12 AM

snark I and others have made the argument that Cheney can't run again.

So you ARE that bad at making an argument!

Posted by snark at April 18, 2008 08:20 AM

So you ARE that bad at making an argument!

Not just an argument; my brain hurts just trying to read that sentence!

snark I and others...

OW!!

Posted by iamcoyote at April 18, 2008 08:30 AM

snark I and others...

Yeah, I wasn't gonna go there but since you pointed it out...

I, snark, had no part in making the ridiculous argument that Dick Cheney is not constitutionally entitled to run for the presidency should he choose to do so.

Posted by snark at April 18, 2008 08:36 AM

John T., I read your comment as a tongue in cheek comment.

Posted by Judith at April 18, 2008 10:13 AM

After watching Colbert it's painfully obvious that the Dems should have nominated Edwards.

That guy would have beat McWarmonger in a landslide.

But, Dems being Dems, why take a sure bet when you can ante up and roll the dice?

Still, Obama's got a shot. He comes off as a likable chap. Hillary, however...oh boy. As a colleague of mine said the other day, "you'd have to be fucking insane to think that woman could win a presidential election!"

By the looks of this joint, insane is playing pretty well.

HBO is making Bill Maher apologize for last weeks Nazi Pope child molesting cult leader rant on his show tonight.

The nervous sponsors have spoken.

Freedom of anti-religious speech will not be tolerated in Bushland.

THAT DOES IT! I'm not patronizing any Catholic gift shops until the Holy Father apologizes for the child sodomy.

Posted by TIKI AL at April 18, 2008 12:56 PM

I didn't think Obama was very funny. He seemed more of a straight man for Colbert's punchlines. In contrast, Hillary delivered the punchlines in her segment, and Edwards delivered a hilarious monologue. I wonder how much was scripted by Colbert's team and how much input the respective candidates had.

Complaining about distractions from the issues is a little ironic, since the complaints themselves are distractions. I'm concerned that "changing politics" seems a higher priority to Obama lately than anything else.

On my long wishlist of problems to solve, things like the economy, health care, and energy policy top the list. I want results on those three issues as soon as possible. If that requires that the list be trimmed, "changing politics" can take a back seat. Given the precarious state of this nation, I want someone who knows and is capable of working with the current politics to solve problems NOW.

"HBO is making Bill Maher apologize for last weeks Nazi Pope child molesting cult leader rant on his show tonight."

Bill should tell HBO to fu*k-off.

"THAT DOES IT! I'm not patronizing any Catholic gift shops until the Holy Father apologizes for the child sodomy."

Maybe he's not sorry (wink, wink).

Too much time spent in the all boy Hitler Youth Camp, hey Judith?

Posted by TIKI AL at April 18, 2008 03:50 PM

I felt the earthquake!

And I also feel that JohnT needs to start over.

Sorry John,
Sorry John,
Try it again.

Dong work for Yuda,
Try it again.
