We're having a beautiful spring here in Massachusetts. The leaves were out on Monday -- two weeks earlier than they did ten years ago. We had a week of 70 degree temperatures -- something that hadn't happened in the previous 37 years I've lived in this state.

RAPID CITY, S.D., May 2 (UPI) -- The mayor of Rapid City, S.D., Friday pleaded with residents to stay home as a May blizzard closed down streets and highways in parts of the state.

"Please, stay off the roads until the weather clears. The wind is still gusting to 50 mph with heavy snow," said Mayor Alan Hanks. "There are very few businesses that are going to open, so take a day off and enjoy it."

I have a dogwood I planted. In my yard, it is the first sign of spring. They are such beautiful trees.

And the blossoms shall be
in the form of a cross.
Two long petals and two short.
And in the center of each petal
there will be nail prints,
Crown with rust and stained with red.
And in the center of the flower
will be a crown--of thorns.
And all who pass and see
the Dogwood tree.
Will remember me."

Funny how that global warming/climate change is screwing up the classice weather patterns so what was usually cold is warm and what was usually warm is cold.

AND here in the beautiful southern tier of NYS it's the sarvisberry trees that are finishing their blooming along with the daffodils here at our place...a welcome site after journeying here from Florida to watch SPRING BURST FORTH! Soon the emerging water lilies and the lilacs and fruit trees, the orioles will build their nest, the pair of geese that visits annually will leave our pond and we'll have the goldfish that wintered over coming back into view...it's 62 this morning after a bit of chilly weather greeted our return...but there is growth on the honeysuckle and the clematis...so for NATURE, at least, there is hope...for AMERICA...I'm less sure!!!

My apple trees are late blooming, because I've neglected them. But the tulips are going nuts, my indoor hibiscus has already had a flower, and all my dahlias are in dirt. I'm thinking of trying a tomato in a pot, and maybe one zucchini plant. Maybe lettuce. And maybe this is the year I'll turn my back yard into raised beds for more veggies. I tend to concentrate on the flowers.

Iamcoyote, I bought my first hibiscus. I am enjoying its beautiful yellow flowers. What a lovely plant.

Not a bad day here. We're participating in a Relay for Life (I'm a first-time team captain) and it looks like the weather will hold at least until overnight.

Judith, my hibiscus has deep orange flowers that last only a day, then fall off. It likes lots of water and I fertilize all summer to keep it blooming. It's pretty much a bush now, but it can't go outside even in the warmest summer or it'll go all yellow. One of my favorites, along with the pots and pots of violets I've managed to keep alive.

CG, way cool! Hope the weather holds for ya.

p-dip, We saw, We yawned, We moved on. A strategist doing his job! The horror! But I understand that's one of this weekend's designated "scandals" and you feel compelled to attempt to push it along. After the Cantor/Youtube hoax, I think people are a little gun shy with the garbage, but you never know.

Coyote, We have a bright red flowering Hibiscus in our front yard. It's blooming like crazy now. Once the heat hits it'll go semi-dormant. When the fall comes, it goes crazy again. That was the hardest thing for me to get used to, two growing and flowering seasons. I love it when my roses come back in the fall.

Cool and overcast here in Seattle for the parade of boats that marks the official opening of the boating season.

The dogwood outside my dining room window is beautiful by day and a luminescent splendor at dusk.

SoS, our roses here stay blooming all summer if you deadhead them regularly. They want lots of water, too. I've got some really old ones that need to be dug up and the soil replaced. Huge job, but someone's gotta do it. I'd love to have a hibiscus outside just to attract the hummingbirds.

The Star Jasmine wrapped around my pool fence is having the best year since I've been here. The smell is wonderfully powerful, our whole family loves it when it's in full bloom. It gets lots of shade in the summer and still suffers from the heat. In a couple of weeks the heat will be up in the mid 90's and beyond.

You sure did.

Argh! We're still in the 50s here; I could take a couple 90s days. But just a couple, then it gets too hot to move because of the humidity. It's killer when you have to move a lot of dirt.

The star jasmine sounds heavenly! This year I might put in a couple Korean lilacs, they have a powerful scent, too, and work well in the PacNW. Sure, they attract bees, but who cares? We need them, right?

Peter, these 29%-ers don't care what you have to say about their global warming.

I've noticed a decline this year. We get them Africanized bees. Mean suckers!
