i not focused that way right now,
but i have to say, turkana, you are doing superb reporting on the environment.
i don't know any other blog i visit where i can read accounts such as this one,
or the several others you have posted recently.
thanks.
Posted by orionATL at May 7, 2008 08:26 PMGlobal warming could help Greenland to independence
Why do you want to keep the Greenlanders under the Dane's thumb?
“Climate change will be very beneficial to society there,” Jesper Madsen, of the DMU environmental research institute in Roskilde, in mainland Denmark, said. “It will improve fishing and above all make it easier to drill for oil and gas. The US geological survey calculates that the greatest unused oil reserves on Earth are in the Greenland waters – and they are in the east, where the ice is melting fastest.”
But many Danes see Greenland as a millstone. It has big social problems: the poverty of fishing families whose waters have been taken over by foreign fleets, a high suicide rate and high levels of HIV and Aids. The calculation is that, even as an independent state, Greenland will need development aid from Denmark – and in return will have to grant Copenhagen some share in whatever energy bonanza emerges when the ice is thinner.
Global Warming and Cooling - The Reality.
Posted by Muck at May 7, 2008 09:11 PMmuck,
when you learn the concept of peer-reviewed science, get back to us.
Posted by Turkana at May 8, 2008 12:00 AMWell that does it.
Go Nuclear!!
Posted by jj at May 8, 2008 04:21 AMMuck is a disgusting conservative game player and always has been---claiming one minute to be "deeply concerned" (and advocating nuclear power) and bouncing back to denial the next. I'd guess the nuclear gambit is just more game playing as well.
Denialist comments from pinheads like muck, peter and jj should be deleted from these threads, there's no reason that TLC should be a platform for the ignorant game playing nonsense of these deadender conservative white males.
The planet's climate and all its ecosystems revolve around the year round arctic cold. As that goes under, everything living on earth is put at risk and will have to find new arrangements in a new system of climate. And in the face of this, these psychotic conservative white males think that playing games and distributing baseless nonsense is the responsible approach.
Despicable, but they're quite pround and delighted with themselves.
Posted by euzoius at May 8, 2008 05:52 AMGood job Ezzie. Next time you get up to pee in the middle of the night, leave the light off.
Matter of fact, don't turn any electrical switch on...ever.
Your phyisical body could just as well be in the dark as your mental body.
So typical. You turn on a light switch and by golly the lights better come on. Of course you don't care how the energy gets there, it just better be there when hypocrite "me" wants to get out of the dark.
Gasoline is no different. Squeeze the handle and gas better flow. Bitch about the price, but the gas better be there when hypocrite "me" needs it.
Who is the denialist? We know who the hypocrites are.
Posted by jj at May 8, 2008 07:47 AMNext time you get up to pee in the middle of the night, leave the light off.
You got no aim? I suggest you sit.
And damn, euz, don't ever put a solar panel up so you can run a night light in your toilet. A complete system to provide a light in your bathroom, including batteries and solar panel, can be had for under $20.00. It won't work for you, jj. You're in the dark.
Posted by phidipides at May 8, 2008 07:56 AMTarkana, seems the 'toxic' post here were the two attempts below trying to reconcile between Obama and Clinton groups. Boy talk about something...took a while to weed through them. Saw you were wondering where I was with Coyote. Those two threads were something else....wow.
Posted by peter at May 8, 2008 08:26 AMI am sure ezzie already has solar panels....and you too Pippy I suppose. You do, don't you?
If not, you are much bigger hypocrites than first assumed.
And if you have jobs, and actually work, please insist that your employer also use strictly solar panels. Tell them that you so believe in solar that you will quit if they don't They will have to go with the bigger models of course.
Fools
"Tarkana", sorry Turkana.
Posted by peter at May 8, 2008 08:35 AMI just don't get why these trolls are so dead set against doing something about the environment. Very odd. Maybe it's not the environment at all. Maybe they're just assholes who know they'll get lost in the big threads, so they come here to whine and get noticed.
And you're right, Turkana, it is amusing that petey takes pride in his role as village idiot. I think all 'pukes are masochists at heart, which is why people like Vitter, Craig, Rove, etc gravitate toward the idiot party. They all feel at home together, because they all have something in their private lives that they're ashamed of and only picking on people who aren't emotionally crippled like they are helps with the shame. Poor, sad beings. It's like watching a whipped dog still wag its tail at the abusive master.
Posted by iamcoyote at May 8, 2008 08:48 AMCoyote, Drive a Civic, tried those light bulbs...don't last any longer than the others. Keep the temps up and down in the house. I conserve trips and recycle some. Bush's Crawford Ranch also conserves energy/water/gas usage. He uses geothermal resources to heat and cool his 4000 sq ft house. Uses 'brown' water and reclaimed rainwater for irrigation purposes around his house. His footprint is far lighter than most homes his size.
The rise of ethanol has garnered the cutting down of rainforest in Brazil for fuel crops. Food shortages because we're raising crops for fuel. Plus, we've had climate change many times during this Earth's evolving, yet we're still here. Those didn't kill us out. Climate change is natural. After 1921's hotest year ever on record then, there was ice melt in the Arctic. Look up The Monthly Weather Review, The Changing Arctic by George Nicolas Ifft, November 1922
Many times people here say you can't look at individual weather occurances yet there was Al Gore saying the cyclone in Myanmar was caused by global warming. Many here stated we would experience many worst Katrina's and Rita's a few years ago...where have they gone...new science excuses that GW may prohibit these storms now from hitting America. The bar seems to be constantly moving. 1990 IPCC reports didn't hold water, 2001 IPCC reports...not met. Last year's report is already being thrown away as inacurate by supporters. With everyone driving Prius's by 2020, we couldn't meet Kyoto numbers.
China will blow away anything that America AND the EU does period.
Posted by peter at May 8, 2008 09:43 AMForget it Peter.
The minds are closed here.
"By God this is what we believe and don't let common sense change it"
Posted by jj at May 8, 2008 09:57 AMjj,
yeah- we prefer peer-reviewed science to your "common sense." guess we just don't have your faith...
peter,
yeah, those threads were fun. i get ripped here for supposedly being in the tank for clinton, and ripped at theconfluence for being mean to clinton.
Posted by Turkana at May 8, 2008 10:04 AMOf course you feel you can get past all those hurt feelings? feel like a pancake now?
Posted by peter at May 8, 2008 10:21 AMSince I've been arguing with you in the "let's all kiss and make up" threads, figured I should go out of my way to thank you (and eriposte and others here) for posts like this one.
Thank you.
A truly sad and frustrating thing is how much our government could do and how quickly, if there was simply the will . . .
