A good example of bird imperiled by climate change are Hawaii's endemic honeycreepers. Avian malaria was introduced to the islands, and its native birds were decimated since they didn't evolve with the disease. The vector is a tropical mosquito which can't live above 3,500-4,000 feet elevation. This leaves a safe harbor above that elevation, at least for birds which don't wander downslope in search of food. If the temperature gets warmer, the mosquitoes will be able to live at higher elevations. Kauai, Oahu, and Molokai already have limited area above the mosquito zone, so their birds (mostly already gone from the latter two islands) will have no place to go.
Posted by CA Pol Junkie at May 29, 2008 08:44 PMWASHINGTON (May 29) - Under a court order and four years late, the White House Thursday produced what it called a science-based "one-stop shop" of specific threats to the United States from man-made global warming. The future doesn't look good for the United States.

Posted by Judith#1 at May 30, 2008 07:34 AMAbout that global warming consensus. Excerpt:
Here’s something to consider: More than 32,000 scientists have signed a petition that says: “There is no convincing evidence that CO2 emissions from modern industrial activity have in the past, are now, or will in the future cause catastrophic climate change.”
Please, find 32,000 (or 32 for that matter) scientists who affirm the reverse of that statement, saying “There IS convincing evidence…” We’ll wait.
Now, about the canard that these folks aren’t real scientists, we offer this from Lawrence Solomon, who explains how signatures were gathered, and what kind of folks signed:
“Using a subset of the mailing list of American Men and Women of Science, a who’s who of Science, Robinson mailed out his solicitations through the postal service, requesting signed petitions of those who agreed that Kyoto was a danger to humanity. . . He’s processed more than 31,000 at this point, more than 9,000 of them with PhDs, and has another 1,000 or so to go — most of them are already posted on a Web site at petitionproject.org.”

Our Global Warming quote of the day:
“Several teams made climate models and all those models predicted global warming with increased atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration.
“None - not one - of those models predicted that global warming would peak in 1998 then stop for the following decade despite atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration increasing by ~5%. But that is what has happened.
“Now, one team has amended their model so it shows the cessation of global warming in 1998. Their amended model predicts that global warming will re-start in 2015. Does anybody other than a fool believe them?”
- Dr. Richard Courtney, a UN IPCC expert reviewer and a UK-based climate and atmospheric science consultant.

Posted by Judith#1 at May 30, 2008 08:59 AMWonder why Bush didn't want to release the report if it is all foolishness, and he knows foolishness when he sees it?
Posted by Judith#1 at May 30, 2008 09:02 AM99% of all the species that ever evolved are extinct.
Now it appears to be the GOP's turn.
Posted by TIKI AL at May 30, 2008 09:36 AMMr. Nuclear Power Muckshitter shows his true global warming "credentials".
2005 was the warmest year on record globally and 2007 tied with 1998. NASA's Goddard Institute (GISS) has completly demolished the "global warming stopped on 1998" bullshit dragged in by the Muckshitter.
Check out the "GISS surface temperature analysis: 2007 summation" page at NASA if you want our NASA scientists view of the matter and not Muck's reeking fecal matter of denial.
