Comments: The Democratic Base

Pink band-aids? I thought they were purple.

very well done, paradox, but you'll upset those fine people who think we can't get the transformational change obama offers if we keep criticizing him for not actually being transformational...

Many Democrats are simply complicit, they believe in Empire just as much as the ReThugs.

Posted by gay veteran at July 13, 2008 09:47 AM

I had to say it, after all the history we've been through it's just absurd I will just bleat along.

No. Get used to it. We earned better than this.

Posted by paradox at July 13, 2008 09:51 AM

We earned better than this.

No we haven't, that's the point. We got what we got because we were unwilling to be critical thinkers when it counted.

How dare Obama supporters expect citizens like Darcy Burner to shut up.

They're idiots? Seriously, they're idiots. Their fucking saint has just put a shiv in all our backs and, like any Cultist, they thank him and attack those who cry against the injustice. No different than the Bushies. Even though they don't like the comparison.

Shorter: "When people say negative things about Obama would all the Obama supporters please STFU. Or better yet, go along so everyone can feel empowered."

Oblivious exasperated Obama supporters sputter...

Absolutely has no meaning. What are you talking about? Obama supporters are oblivious? And the "howls of liberal rage"? Puh-leese. I see very few true liberals posting here.

...the Obama leadership and supporters expect the base...

I didn't know the "base" was a monolithic single-issue group sharing the exact same ideas. So tell me, what the hell am I supposed to rally around? Tell me the options I have? Am I supposed to be supporting someone else? Tell me what the fuck I'm supposed to do. All I get from your post is that I should STFU. Anything else?

but you'll upset those fine people who think we can't get the transformational change obama offers if we keep criticizing him

Criticize away. But unlike the "good" republi-cons who support Buschco, don't expect me to nod my head in assent and agree with you. What you want is the best of both worlds: Say anything you want and expect no response. You aren't going to get that.

How dare Obama supporters expect citizens like Darcy Burner to shut up.

I would appreciate some links.

...it's just absurd I will just bleat along.

You came off like Goat Boy in this post.

I see the bitter has returned. Are you returning to God and guns? Good old Senator Daschle, Obama's right hand man who's guiding him through this campaign. The ultimate insider with a lobbyist wife. One has to wonder what she's getting for close contact with the Obama campaign. Nice to be able to get to the campaigns ear so intimately and yet allow the candidate to say "lobbyist will have no say in his administration." We hear you Senator Obama with a "yeah right".

Then there's Dodd and Schumer and banks or lending institutions. They give to the candidate and get favors or favorable treatment...going both ways now. That bank that failed gave much to Democrats. Wonder how much they got to look the other way. Or how much Schumer contributed to it's demise. Did they fail to deliver for him? $1.3 billion withdrawn after Schumer's letter...Wow!

Paradox, enjoy your time in Austin. The air there is very friendly to the liberal mindset. Great place to hold that event Wednesday. Make sure to look up the people of "burntorangereport.com", they are young Democratic progressives from UT, very energized for the coming campaign. They're not friendly to my viewpoint, they are a good group though. Byron LaMasters and Jim Dallas started the blog, Karl-Thomas Musselman runs it now. Good people from this partisan's viewpoint. BTW they have some guides that might help you at the NN, you might have a look.

Have a safe trip Paradox!

Or how much Schumer contributed to it's demise.

Paint it any which way you want. Democrats did not create the banking debacle, you did. You guys broke it, you own it.

I think the biggest failure has been the Dem Leadership espeically since 2006...Can anyone tell me anything they've done policy-wise in the area of leadership that has really dramatically altered anything that Nero and his merry gang of war criminal henchman wanted (they gave us the surge, full funding of the war no strings attatched, failed economy, high energy prices and korporate profits up the wazoo, and no meaningful accountablility whatsover for anyone in the Cheney Administration....yup those sternly worded letters really have those people quaking in their boots. SEriously what has that leadership done that's even remotely progressive or seriously changed the path of this country from Junior's amoral greedy grip? Sadly Obama appears to be following their advice and in their footsteps and if that is what the "new" democratic party is all about become (same as the current one) then it too will be an abject failure....seriously 9% approval rating and that's who he's emulating and following....come on people.

That's all you got? ;-)

Hey Phidy-cent...enjoy your Sunday!

The vote on FISA was the third strike on the direct attack upon the Constitution under W that has been enabled by the Democrats - The Patriot Act, The Military Comissions Act and the new FISA update bill with Telecom immunity. Combine those disgraces with the Democrats refusal to impeach Bush and Cheney - or hold any Republican accountable for any of their crimes, and it seems we are living under a Good Cop/Bad Cop brand of politics. As a lifetime Democrat, I find it no longer tolerable to be a member of the Enabling Party, so I mailed my voter registration change to Independent (no party) yesterday. I will still vote straight Democratic in November for the usual lesser of two evils situation. Obama could still lose my vote if he continues to regress toward the right. Also, the issues from the Sixties he dimisses have never been resolved - the Class War is still on more than ever, and we need to start a new Progressive Party for future elections.

Hey Phidy-cent...enjoy your Sunday!

You too.

Took a slow 55 mph scenic cruise around some lakes here the other day. Beautiful drive and the old Civic EX got 42 mpg. What a car!

Posted by phidipides at July 13, 2008 11:10 AM

South of I40 and US 69? 55??????? Got to be at 70.

Posted by peter at July 13, 2008 11:23 AM

My last tank got me 35 in city, we have EPA mandated additives that knock 10% off our mileage. The tank before that was at 37 MPG. Civic's are just great cars!

Posted by peter at July 13, 2008 11:30 AM

Joke Line is not representative of Obama supporters. I'm a rabid supporter of his, and I absolutely don't think people like Marcy Wheeler should STFU.

My beef is when people start using RNC talking points and character attacks when speaking out over FISA. If your blog post touches on the same themes as the RNC website, you're doing something very wrong.

I have nothing to add but, "Excellent post, Paradox."

Not even close. North of 44 and west of 75. Back roads marked 65 and 70, but no traffic and I cruised my own speed. Most of the back roads (2 - lane, no shoulder) are 65, and they include some incredible curvy roads that really let me have fun in the Civic. My old CRX was more fun in corners, but there is nothing like a shift to 3rd and redlining the engine in the EX. No torque but lots of RPM.

We run around 80-85 mph on the majors. Knocks me to about 35 mpg. Ethanol blends took me to 32, and one tank even did me 28! Our fuel marking law went into effect July 1 so now I know what I'm getting in the tank. My truck is a Mazda extended cab and it makes no difference whether it's ethanol or not. Always the exact same mileage. Civics need pure dinosaur juice.

If I was in the city I would consider a Civic Hybrid. I just can't take advantage of the regenerative braking with the drives I make.

There is a certain Southern attitude (a self effacement, a dare not step out of my place, a hang dog lowering of the eyes rather than show dissent) that you very often have to leave the South to rid your self of it.
I left the South, I now speak right up when I disagree with people, I write letters to the paper (my brother was aghast),I've demonstrated over the criminals in the White House (my brother said I would have to leave his city with attitudes like I have, that I wouldn't be welcome - I said " well, I did leave").
But you know what? The Dems now have that attitude that I have worked so hard rid myself of.
How did this happen? They are so worried about offending the media, the right wing base, the blue dogs, that they have forgotten about supporting all of us long suffering Dems who were so hopeful just a few months ago. They deem all others the ones to please.
We have stepped out of our place and actually won an election and now must bend over backwards not to offend in order to have a chance at the next one.
Maybe that is the problem. People see a weakness, a wish to please that is so unbecoming that it makes people cringe and look away.

"...pink bandaids...."

Correct, Will at #1. They were purple--as in the Purple Heart Medal awarded for wounds sustained in a combat zone. The bandaids were worn by assholes at the Republican't National Convention to mock the wounds John Kerry sustained and the honors he received during his swift boat duty in Vietnam. Kerry wasn't wounded enough and doesn't carry around enough Vietnamese shrapnel in his body to this very day to please them.

I said then and I'll say now, if Kerry's service was so easy, I wonder why W's daddy couldn't have arranged some of it for W.

Of course, this year military service cannot be questioned. I wonder why that is?

NOT!
