Repug talking point: Get Obama to admit the troop escalation or "Surge" has worked. They have twisted and distorted every comment to the point that supposedly Obama has insulted the military by saying that he would not support the surge if he had to do it over again. Joe "piece of shit" Scarborough "says that Obama dishonors the troops by not admitting the troop escalation worked."
Posted by angryman at July 23, 2008 04:17 AMif the surge worked then the iraqi govt should have its shit together and reach all of the goals the "surge," should have facilitated. that has not happened, so by definition it is not working. like obama said, violence is up, we can't leave, violence is down, we can't leave. in real life with real bullets, you can't have it both ways without someone getting shot. in this case, its our pride and joy getting butchered daily. the "surge," should've been in afghanistan, not the war of choice.

1 putrified pepper? You think they would have "salted" hundreds of them to make it look more convincing.
Posted by TIKI AL at July 23, 2008 05:42 AMCEOs hate regulations until they need cover behind them. They love to say we are are working with regulators so that they can make a pronouncement in the end. Bottom line they want few obstacles between them and the consumer dollar. Some companies make decisions based on cost benefit analysis. That is will he lawsuits exceeds the profits.
Posted by angryman at July 23, 2008 05:52 AMOh, hell, just grow your own.
I've been doing it since the Salinas, CA, outbreak.
Planted 3 old holey wheelbarrows with (successive plantings) and wheeled them in and out of the garage, depending on the weather. Last winter (I'm talking dead of winter in the mid-South) we had salad (lettuce/spinach) every day, sometimes twice a day.
Now I'm growing lettuce in a windowsill and will sow more wheelbarrows when (if) fall blows in.
This summer we were going to rely on our neighborhood vegetable stand for tomatoes (they grow their own) but have also supplemented with our own tomatoes grown from 2 plants a new Wal-mart was giving away.
I'm considering potatoes in a bushel basket, cabbage, etc. in other containers.
The prospect of eating mass-produced filth is an unpleasant notion to those of us with chronic illness.
Americans must come to realize that it's in their best interests for government to oversee the safe production of its food.
Here's another of my complaints: in the rural area I live in, the produce department of our one and only grocery store (large chain) is an icky mass of slime and god-only-knows what else. The thought of eating anything from there makes me feel faint.

Americans have always known that. It's the Food and Drug Administration’s underfunded food-safety programs that has become the problem.

Yes, this is of course correct.
But I guess I meant it in the sense that we are going to have to INSIST on oversight as a priority rather than some bogus war.
Posted by at July 23, 2008 06:58 AMJoe Scarborough "says that Obama dishonors the troops by not admitting the troop escalation worked."
I don't watch broadcast news - but most Americans do, especially the middle-of-the-roaders (by contrast, few Americans watch the cable broadcasts -- on his best day O'Really still gets well under 1% of the populace).
Why is this important? Because while Scarborough can make those kind of comments, few people hear them. Meanwhile, most people are seeing extended videos from Iraq of the troops treating Obama like a rock star.
This reminds me of Reagan in the 1982-3 timeframe. His policies polled poorly, but he polled well. His chief of staff went out of his way to give the broadcast news networks lots of opportunities for video of Reagan smiling and waving to crowds -- and those were on TV every night.
Posted by Anonny at July 23, 2008 07:13 AMAlso, a tracking system for food has yet to be put into place. At least two bills in Congress focus on the issue of food tracking. One bill (H.R. 3485), introduced by Rep. Diana DeGette☼ (D-CO), would require the government to implement a tracking system "for all stages of manufacturing, processing, packaging, and distribution of food." Another bill (S. 1292) would require a similar system but apply only to meat and poultry products. Neither of these bills, nor the approximately ten other bills aimed at improving food safety, have cleared the committee stage. We have talking about tracking food for years, and nothing is ever done.

I bought one peach (for lunch) and a seedless watermellon at our chain grocery store yesterday. I spent almost five dollars for the two, which is beyond outrageous. The peach was mush inside and the watermellon was red, but totally tasteless. I marched back to the store with peach and watermellon in hand and got my money back. Maybe if everyone should start returning inferior food.
Posted by Judith at July 23, 2008 08:00 AMYou guys see the great news...Luke Russert may be going to work at NBC to cover the election!
Posted by peter at July 23, 2008 02:01 PMObama had nothing but praise for the troops. I guess that didn't get reported by the MSM.
Did the love affair end already?
Seems the MSM couldn't get too close to see it Seven. And the foreign news services got treated even worse.
Posted by peter at July 23, 2008 03:17 PMAnd Iraqi's couldn't care less. Only one news service carried anything about his trip there. No pool reporters, no press, what pictures coming out were from military sources.

hard to care about some foreign visitor when you're dodging IEDs

Actually it got plenty of video coverage on the broadcast news.
The broadcast news is distorted and biased, but not consistently pro-Republican like Fox and much of the other cable noise. And while cable is in love with the talking head format, broadcast is in love with videos -- the more video available the more coverage you get. Which is why Obama has been doing well on broadcast news, he does great on video while McCain comes across like a a senior citizen Chucky doll.
Furthermore, people watching broadcast news (and that includes most of America -- far more than cable) get most of their lasting impressions from the video.
