It was great to see Teddy Kennedy again! Leech and McCaskill were a bore. Michelle and the kids were cute. 2004's DNC seemed more focused on some sort of message. JJ Jr. was very nice, the flow just seemed uneven. I enjoyed PBS's coverage.
Posted by peter at August 26, 2008 03:51 AMI think overall it was a good day for the Dems. It was interesting watching the talking heads analyze and reanalyze what happened. Repugs whined about Clinton not being on the ticket. MSM is following right along to keep Obama off message. It is like watching sheep because that have taken a non story and made it a story.
Guess the most disturbing thing to me was not the DEM convention, but what the Repugs were doing nearby in an interview. Seems that the Repugs rolled out a former Clinton Supporter who appears in their new ad, Ms. Bartoshevich of Wisconsin. During an interview she was asked why she would support a pro-life candidate? Ms. Bartoshevich quoted from a 1999 SF Chronicle stating that McLame didn't want to overturn Roe vs. Wade.
(dailykos.com/story/2008/8/25/163722/336)
Seems Ms. Fiorina is up to her old tricks of again. She is out whoring for McLame and putting out false information on McLame's position.
Seems that NARAL Pro-choice America had warned McLame about this in the past.
(prochoiceamerica.org/elections/election-pr/pr07172008_readinglist_1.html)
One of Ms. Fiorina's misleading statements got Johnny boy in trouble for a bit. Remember the viagra moment?

Kudos to Kennedy for pulling himself together in the interest of the party. He wasn't on his game but his peersenve in the spite of his health issues was important. Leach was awful. McCaskill gave me a headache. Nancy Pelosi relying on the catch phrase speech was dumb. Michelle Obama was wonderful. Struck just the perfect tone. Her job was to introduce her husband and their family to the nation and she did that wonderfully. The big impression was that no one need be worried about having to be embarassed by anything she will do as First Lady. Lovely young daughters as well.
Posted by snark at August 26, 2008 04:31 AM"presence despite his health issues" that should be.
Posted by snark at August 26, 2008 04:35 AMI was really impressed with Michele's speech as well, and thought the girls were adorable. I didn't watch any of the gasbags, they never have anything important to say. Can't wait for the Daily Show's coverage; I'm glad they play last night's ep the next day.
Posted by iamcoyote at August 26, 2008 05:21 AMWhat a self righteous ass!
Posted by angryman at August 26, 2008 05:57 AMI agree with all the above, but I have one complaint. Was it me or did anyone else notice that during Michelle's speech, the only people in the audience that were scanned were black Americans? It was as if the Democratic Convention had nothing but a black audience, and few whites. Was this an accident or some hidden agenda of the MSM?
Posted by Judith at August 26, 2008 06:00 AMWho are you angry with now?
Posted by peter at August 26, 2008 06:02 AMJ, what network were you watching? I watched on PBS. I wasn't paying that close attention to the crowd shots as far as makeup goes. I liked the Judy interview of one of Barry's former classmates from Hawaii.
Posted by peter at August 26, 2008 06:08 AMMichelle eloquently expressed why America doesn't need Barack. Having a sound family unit including a real daddy, having a willingness to work hard enduring the hardship that naturally besets mankind, and growing up in this great nation of opportunity are advantages that already give the unaborted the hope of a brighter future. All this without the need for a government that would seize the fruits of one's hard work and use it to garner votes for the party.
Posted by onar at August 26, 2008 06:13 AMonar, have to admit I heard a bit of that too--I was thinking this could be a speech at the republican convention. You can have whatever you want--it's all up to you.

But I think maybe you're being a bit harsh on yourself. An ass? Sure. But you don't strike me as terribly self-righteous.

Well, no one's talking about a new New Deal are they?
Posted by at August 26, 2008 06:48 AM
Judith, 25% of the Dem delegates are black, so there's a good chance to get them in any crowd shot. That won't be an issue at the GOP Convention. I agree with snark, that guy Leach was dreadful.
Posted by T2 at August 26, 2008 07:02 AMThe guy, Jim Leach, didn't even run a re-election campaign and when he was defeated he wondered why. For a token Republican at the DNC, they sure picked a bad one. He sure sucked the air out of the place.
Obama forget where he was when his kids asked him where he was? Isn't there a commercial about that? Senior event there?
Posted by peter at August 26, 2008 07:23 AMI thought Michelle Obama was awesome. Wow.
Posted by paradox at August 26, 2008 07:25 AMPeter, I had been listening to NPR, and then switched to watching NBC.
I caught the glitch about where Obama was last night. However, at least he remembers how many homes he owns. Forgetting where one is during a long campaign is not unusual.
T2, that is exactly what I thought about the GOP Convention.
Posted by Judith at August 26, 2008 07:47 AM
For a token Republican at the DNC, they sure picked a bad one.
You bet, cupcake. Intelligent arguments are tough to listen to, I guess:
The party that once emphasized individual rights has gravitated in recent years toward regulating values. The party of military responsibility has taken us to war with a country that did not attack us. The party that formerly led the world in arms control has moved to undercut treaties crucial to the defense of the earth. The party that prides itself on conservation has abdicated its responsibilities in the face of global warming. And the party historically anchored in fiscal restraint has nearly doubled the national debt, squandering our precious resources in an undisciplined and unprecedented effort to finance a war with tax cuts. Jim Leach
Putting America before party. Many republi-cons would do well to listen to his message.
BTW, here is his speech: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZtoZYfk3Gw
Posted by phidipides at August 26, 2008 08:05 AMJudith, don't fall for the goatfucker's goading, it wasn't a glitch, it was a time delay and it means nothing. But you're right, not knowing how many houses you (or your wife) owns is indicative of a larger mental problem. Do we need a decrepit ol' codger who admits he knows nothing about the economy in the White House? I think not.
Posted by iamcoyote at August 26, 2008 08:15 AM"I'm proud of my record of service to this country and it has nothing to do with houses.
Got it.
Nothing to do with houses!
What it has to do with (is) putting Americans in houses and keeping them in their homes. And that's what I know how to do," he said...
But I thought it had nothing to do with houses?
Maybe he's talking about a curfew?
Martial Law?
Is John McCain planning on declaring Martial Law to get people into their houses and keep them there?
Scary.
Posted by snark at August 26, 2008 08:24 AMIs John McCain planning on declaring Martial Law to get people into their houses and keep them there?
McCain's response: "I spent 5 1/2 years as a P.O.W without a house!"
Posted by phidipides at August 26, 2008 08:30 AMIs John McCain planning on declaring Martial Law to get people into their houses and keep them there?
You know, I think he is! While it's refreshing that he's upfront about becoming a dictator, we should take him at his word and exile him now, rather than let him do more damage.
Posted by iamcoyote at August 26, 2008 08:38 AMMcCain's response: "I spent 5 1/2 years as a P.O.W without a house!"
Yeah, I understand that the VC offered him a house WITH a kitchen table (Laz-i-boy rumors are unsubstantiated) but he turned them down repeatedly. He felt that if he couldn't get them without their assistance than he didn't need them. Not sure how he made rent on his Hanoi Hilton room all those years though. I wonder if it was rent controlled?
Posted by snark at August 26, 2008 08:41 AMHang on, didn't he get free medical care once the VC learned who his dad was? Sheesh. Even the VC were better on healthcare than we are now. Pretty sad.
Posted by iamcoyote at August 26, 2008 08:44 AMI didnt watch more than 4 minutes of Nancy P - she was so damned awful I wondered if she had botoxed her mouth closed. Mumber mumble gurgle.
So I am getting a kick out of reading different comments on different sites. BTD usually says what I am thinking so I find him a good source for a reality check if I missed anything.
Sounds like I didnt miss anything last night.
Posted by the young Judith (tyj) at August 26, 2008 08:45 AMSounds like I didnt miss anything last night.
Lemme get this straight. You didn't watch it, cos you're oh, so above it all, yet you scour the internets for someone who you agree with to tell you what to feel about it, and then you make sure everyone knows how oh, so above it all you are. An opinion based on someone else's opinion. And we're lemmings?
Not to mention you take issue to Cindy Lou being called a barbie, and here you are, making comments about Pelosi and botox. Consistency isn't really your style is it? What a maverick, eh?
Posted by iamcoyote at August 26, 2008 09:00 AMWhat do you think?
Well, I'm not really paying too much attention or watching the convention this year...I'm just not into for many reasons, mainly the realization that the barely lesser of two evils Dem party and it's candidate for prez and vice prez are just that ...and despite the fact that I am ecstatic to finally be released from the amoral criminal grips of the Cheney administration....sigh.
That said, I did see some snippets of Teddy K...he looked good and knowing what I know about his condition and his prognosis well I'm glad he did it. I saw some snippets of Michelle...she's a refreshing breath fresh air compared to the vacuous joker-esque looking current first lady...although I did a huge "heh" when I heard her say something to the effect that your word means everything and it's the only thing you've got (guess the fact her husband's "word" and promises that were broken on fisa escaped her)...
Honestly, for me The Democratic party after the last two years+ has proven what and who they represent and are concerned with first and foremost..it's about protecting them and their ruling class corporate friends...and if people aren't quite certain why I say that please refer to the last two years under a democratic led congress (just what have they done for us serfs and to reign in any lawlessness of the ruling class). And if that's not good enough, then also go read Glennzilla's blog and his reportage of dnc corporate sponsor AT&T's private party for the kewl kid's ruling class ...and then after that go read Arthur Silber's blog...
I'll try to keep the pessimism away from here as I understand many of you are very enthusiastic and excited and that's good for you....I just am not in the same place as many of you any longer...and wish I could be... but I'm just not very hopeful of the future even should the Dem candidate win.
Posted by emal at August 26, 2008 09:00 AMWhat a fookin' idiot! I can't wait to see the montage of this shit from the Daily Show.
BURBANK, Calif. - Republican John McCain traded jibes with "Tonight" show host Jay Leno, with his age and houses the main target but McCain turned serious to defend his wife's family wealth.Posted by iamcoyote at August 26, 2008 09:05 AM"Could I just mention to you Jay, that in a moment of seriousness, I spent five and a half years in a prison cell, I didn't have a house, I didn't have a kitchen table, I didn't have a table, I didn't have a chair," said McCain, citing his history as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. "I spent those five and half years not because I wanted to get a house when I got back home."
The Die-Hard for Hillary bunch is getting weird. I heard one say essentially "I don't care what Hillary wants, I'm gonna vote for her anyway". I'm not really sure they are voting for Hillary as much as they are voting for themselves...Are there any Die-Hard men (except Bill), if so, I've not seen them.
Posted by T2 at August 26, 2008 09:13 AMUnfortunately, the convention seems to me to be simply fluff. No one is covering the real work being done by the lobbyists and corporate parties. AT&T, Comcast, and the weapons dealers have saturated the elected officials attending with food, booze, and baubles to reward them for their good work on FISA and war funding.
The real theme, never expressed, is that if you are poor and disadvantaged, and you suffered to get educated, you, too, can get the corporate goodies if you play along and never speak or the source of your power and if vote for the right positions, your corporate liege will support and promote you to a position of power where you can return the loyalty and services due.
This is not the Democratic Convention, it is the AT&T/Comcast convention.
Posted by Nobody at August 26, 2008 09:19 AMNobody, Firedoglake is covering all of that stuff.
Posted by iamcoyote at August 26, 2008 09:20 AMYeah, FireDogLake and Greenwald are the only ones doing any real news. The real news of the AT&T convention is the utter corruption of the whole thing.
Posted by Nobody at August 26, 2008 09:24 AMI know a lot of folks who wanted Hillary are planning on sitting this one out or voting for McCain.
One Democrat was pounded because this action would be putting a Republican in the White House.
She replied that a vote for McCain in 2008 was a vote for Hillary in 2012.
Posted by muck at August 26, 2008 09:30 AMHere is what the convention is really about. It's about keeping your place in the sun and getting "special" access to the pols on the payroll.
The real news that needs to be covered is who the sponsors are greasing.
Posted by Nobody at August 26, 2008 09:33 AMShe replied that a vote for McCain in 2008 was a vote for Hillary in 2012.
As someone pointed out on some radio show this morning, if Obama loses, Hillary and her supporters will be blamed. It will not help her in 2012.
The Die-Hard for Hillary bunch is getting weird.
I agree. I know I'm repeating myself, but did Kerry have to prove himself to supporters of the other candidates who ran? Did those people sit out or vote for Bush? Why such a high bar for Obama? Why does he have to beg for their vote and prove himself worthy? From this Hillary supporter--the supporters who are stirring things up are really pissing me off. And the media coverage is pissing me off too. They're making it a bigger story than it is.

...a wonderful 1st day...and down 1 point in 2 polls...wonderful indeed !
iamcoyote - yep, that is about it.
I dont have time to watch teevee all night - sorry. can watch the highlights when I have time - and skim some of the articles that quote - based on that, and the opinions of people whim I beleive to be close to my thinking process - nope, I didnt miss anything important for me.
so tell me what you think I missed that would excite me? Michelle sounding intelligent and showing her great kids? I knew that already so I dont need that. Ted K is a great speaker - I knew that, thanks
Did they make a case for kicking the GOP to the curb?
oops...mistake... 2 points lost
Posted by jj at August 26, 2008 11:18 AMso tell me what you think I missed that would excite me?
Why bother? I don't care whether you're excited or not, and you're determined to not be excited.
Yawn.
Oh, drat, see, you've bored me already! Off to find something more interesting. I think there's some paint drying in the warehouse...
Posted by iamcoyote at August 26, 2008 11:21 AMiamcoyote - you are so funny - sounds like you dont have anything exciting to share so you blame me for your limitation. Nice trick there - but it fails everytime with someone like me. See, I am part of what used to quaintly be called "the reality base community". I get my jollies from real solutions and real success.
So what you say is absolutely true, I dont get excited by media bullshit - if you do, then good for you! This country is choking on media fed bullshit so you are very lucky to be living in this grand time. Pull out the hankies I think we are gonna have a collective bawl!
it sucks for achievers like me, though - I see the economy tanking and friends concerned about their jobs, their kids futures, their health and their elderly parents' health etc. That isnt answered by the kind of vacuity I read in the paper today.
But Hillary is on tonight and I have a feeling that when she speaks - some of that may actually get addressed. Hurrah for the oldsters!
Feel free to let loose that barrage of displeasure I am sure is knotting your knickers right now. :-)and big hugs to you.

...a wonderful 1st day...and down 1 point in 2 polls...wonderful indeed !
Only in your mind. Obama has a 4 point lead and McCain is dropping. Now what is really interesting is the response to the question "Who is the stronger leader?"
March: McCain 53 - 40
June: McCain 47 - 44
August: Obama 49 - 44
An 18 point swing in 3 months. Keep on talking Gigolo John. A few more "Noun, verb P.O.W.s" and that swing is gonna be impressive.

Posted by phidipides at August 26, 2008 12:31 PMPoor Steve. :-(
hah - kidding.
But 7of 6 Your whole attitude shows, as always, you have no idea what I am saying. You try to dumb everything down. I will try once last time - knowing you dont really have any interest in actual conversation and then I gotta work -
What I am saying is I have neither the time nor the desire to sit in front of the tube all night long and that I do often look across a wide variety of opinions to get a consensus - esp when it comes to the boring meaningless crap that came out of people's mouths last night - by reading across sources. If I read and then assess that something is interesting and worth my limited free time, then I spend the time to listen to the audio or see the video. I firmly believe in controlling my content flow -and not have someone else make that decision for me.
I do find BTD's comments close to my own when I assess something - so yes, just like I would read a review of a play by someone I respect before coughting up $250 a ticket, then I look to someone like a BTD and others including Turkana (on the blog side anyway) and James Wolcott for some of his/their assessments.
If somehow you find that worthy of ridcule then all I can say is I respect my bank acct more than I respect ridcule from people I dont know so we'd have to call it quits.
Love ya though, guy. You are pretty fun overall. Same with just about everyne here - smart people. Otherswise, I assure you - I wouldnt waste you time with any post here by me.
