She Can Look You in the Eye and Tell You Black is White

No wonder the right wing trolls love her -- she's just like them!

2008 will go down in history as the first Youtube election. It's not just that so many people see the videos virally, it's also that it makes oppo research much more efficient.

Alas, the McCain/Palin ticket ("The Old Man and the She") doesn't seem quite up on the new technology. I just saw a video at Poor Man of Larry Kudlow interviewing Palin a while back on Troopergate, and basically contradicting what are now known to be facts.

I really have to wonder if we're not going to have an Eagleton/Shriver moment soon.

Posted by Anonny at August 30, 2008 05:08 AM

Anonny, that was my first thought upon reading the TPM article; how many McFool VP choices are we see before November?

Posted by captain dan at August 30, 2008 06:08 AM

Can anyone believe that Palin will have any positive influence on Senator Clinton supporters! The only group to agree with Palin as VP are the 23 per centers who still adore Bush. Did this spring forth from the forehead on the Dark Lord’s acolyte?

Posted by Erin go bra at August 30, 2008 06:21 AM

Earlier I said she may not even own a passport -- I was corrected by someone who pointed out she'd visited Alaskan national guard troops overseas in 2007.

It turns out that was the only international trip of her life -- that she had to get her first passport to make that trip.

Any one remember how Dukakis was critized for not having been to any major capitals in Europe, although he had traveled internationally a lot? How times change.

Some on the right have argued that Palin has more experience than Tim Kaine, the Democratic governor of Virginia. This is absurd. Even if Kaine had, like Palin, done nothing significant before becoming Governor, Virginia is not Alaska. In Virginia you cannot avoid being entangled with national and international issues because so much of your state is dominated by the federal government around D.C.

This was one of the things that ruled out Schweitzer as a pick for Obama -- no international experience (not counting minor border issues with Canada) and not much national experience either.

Goddamit, don't jinx it, or we'll have a Harriet Miers situation! Hopefully McFool is even more obstinate than Bush.

As for the worthless pathetic Condi, she'll still wondering if Putin will ever return her email on Georgia....

Posted by euzoius at August 30, 2008 06:23 AM

The MSM is on the march to enhance, lie, sway, and recreate Palin's background. Newt, "Palin has more military experience than Obama and Biden." Today Show this morning.

In high school on the basketball team, she was known as "the barracuda." Yeah, right.

Palin was a Council Woman. Where was Obama a Councilman?

Palin was a mayor of a small town. How many citizens lived in the city where Obama was mayor?

Palin is the Governor of Alaska. Which state has Obama governed?

Palin is responsible for her state’s budget. Which state’s budget has Obama been responsible for?

Palin is the Commander in Chief of Alaska’s National Guard. Which state’s National Guard has Obama commanded?

Someone better find a scandal quick, because by the time November arrives, she will be better qualified than Biden for the Vice-Presidency.

Posted by Judith at August 30, 2008 06:27 AM

Goddamit, don't jinx it, or we'll have a Harriet Miers situation! Hopefully McFool is even more obstinate than Bush.

My thought exactly. TPM has a memo up suggesting that the Obama camp lay easy on her until the nomination. Then after Palin makes a blatant play for Hillary supporters, have Hillary come on in an ad factually pointing out why Palin doesn't cut it.

I agree with TPM, in part because we don't want Palin to stumble out of the gate. We want her to stay afloat long enough to get the formal nomination, after which it will be a lot harder for the RNC to replace her.

Posted by Anonny at August 30, 2008 06:27 AM

What does Sarah Palin have over Condi Rice?

1) She's white.
2) She's white.
3) She's not black.
4) She's white.
5) She's a bonafide fundamentalist creationist.
6) She's white.

C'mon, you know that Republicans allow well-behaved blacks into certain positions to prove their diversity, but won't actually let them lead or anything.

Remember how they killed off Perot's Reform Party in 2000? Buchanan literally stole the nomination (look it up -- it was quite a comedy) then picked a black woman for his VP, thereby guaranteeing almost no votes for him.

(Palin, btw, was an active Buchanan supporter -- with all his reactionary positions -- in 1999. Which gives another set of good questions to ask her in a press conference. "Do you still believe that Europe is being taken over by Muslims?" "Do you still believe that the US should get out of the UN?")

"She's not prepared to be governor. How can she be prepared to be vice president or president? Look at what she's done to this state. What would she do to the nation?"

-- Sen. Lyda Green, president of the state Senate and a Republican from Palin's hometown of Wasilla

Posted by Anonny at August 30, 2008 06:38 AM

Oh, Newt's reference to her "military service" was because she was head of the National Guard. The Alaska Army National Guard is composed of approximately 1850 soldiers and maintains 77 armories, including Fort Greely.

Posted by Judith at August 30, 2008 06:52 AM

unless she can't hold up under a media scrutiny she can't face, condi would have been a devastating pick. not because she wasn't a miserable failure both as nsa and sos, but because she's the only public figure the media love even more than they love mccain. it would have been tweety's wet dream. perhaps mccain thought it impossible to pick someone so tied to bush, or perhaps she really can't handle the vetting that takes place in electoral politics, as opposed to appointive, but i have never seen the tv pundits criticize her.

Posted by Turkana at August 30, 2008 07:03 AM

Well, the GOP trick of announcing McCain's V.P. pick the day after the Democratic Convention has literally knocked our successful Convention off the news.

Posted by Judith at August 30, 2008 07:04 AM

Of course the media never criticized Condi, she is a Republican. However, Hillary, being a Democrat, was fair game.

Posted by Judith at August 30, 2008 07:07 AM

She was the least qualified of all the contenders, youngest and clearly the best looking. McNasty is definitely surrounding himself with good looking women. Given his record on eye-rak, his pick of Ms. Palin is right in line.

It is amazing watching all of the spin, er bullshit, as repug stretch their brains pumping up this woman. She was mayor of city with 8k people, which amounts to high school principal in a large city, Governor of a remote state and beauty queen.

I was really expecting the repugs pretty boy "Rummy" to get it.

Posted by angryman at August 30, 2008 07:10 AM

One think about Sarah Palin is that it at least seems like she doesn't take shit from people. So after McCain looks down her shirt one too many times or cops a feel or calls her a c@nt, hopefully she'll tell him to go to hell and walk--maybe in late October. I don't know if she's ambitious enough to stick through 4 years of McCreepy in order to be the first female vp and possibly prez. Or maybe her husband will punch McCain out.

Posted by CG at August 30, 2008 07:27 AM

People magazine scored one of the first interviews with McCain and his vice president pick Sarah Palin. In the interview they discussed Palin's resume, being a mom, her child's down syndrome and her message to woman. People also asked her about her readiness to be president:

Do you feel ready to be a heartbeat away from the presidency? SARAH: Absolutely. Yup, yup. Especially with a good team around us.

This is what is terrifying. This woman cannot see that she is not qualified for the most important position in the United States (if McCain cannot finish his term). It says a lot about her ability of discernment to grasp and comprehend the importance of the position. I would say Mrs. Palin fails to compprehend, after meeting McCain once, and one phone conversation, the magnitude of the position she has been asked to fulfill. She cannot see what is evident to the average mind, that she is NOT qualified. I question not only McCain's judgement, but Mrs. Palin's practical judgement.

"Sen. Lyda Green, president of the state Senate and a Republican from Palin's hometown of Wasilla."

What is this, the Anonny talking to themselves thread? Your Lyda Green quote rightly projects her being a "maverick". Bucking the party meme, they didn't want her, they haven't supported her, yet she has an approval rating in the 80's. Thanks for cluing in the TLC'ers here. Quoting Alaska Republicans will build her persona more. Haven't they been entangled in a lot of stuff up there lately? With Stevens and the Congressman both under scrutiny, neither of which had very many positive things to say about Palin. Take their words...

Time reports McCain took in $3 mil from the time of his announcement to 6 PM. Somebody is very excited. Shame he has to spend it next week.

On the single most debated issue of our times, the Iraq war, Sarah Palin similarly was out to lunch until as recently as last spring. Shortly after becoming governor, she was asked her views on the surge:

Alaska Business Monthly: We've lost a lot of Alaska's military members to the war in Iraq. How do you feel about sending more troops into battle, as President Bush is suggesting?

Palin: I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq. I heard on the news about the new deployments, and while I support our president, Condoleezza Rice and the administration, I want to know that we have an exit plan in place; I want assurances that we are doing all we can to keep our troops safe. Every life lost is such a tragedy.

John McCain would have us believe that Iraq is the central battle in the war on terror, and yet he selects as his running mate somebody who was paying almost no attention to the Iraq war for 4 long years after the invasion.

She sounds real Christian!

Posted by Seven of Six at August 30, 2008 08:15 AM

Prior to taking over the Governorship, Palin was the mayor of Wasilla, population 8,500, where she left the town in an economic mess.

Sarah Palin and Wasilla Sports Complex land deal

Sarah Palin was mayor of Wasilla from 1996 to 2002. Her record during that time can tell us a lot about her. The biggest deal during her tenure is perhaps the construction of the sports complex that was built on someone else's land. She had to raise sales taxes to pay for it. The whole episode of incompetence, arrogance, and lack of respect for the law is exactly the style of governance that we've seen from Bush and co in the past seven years.

Posted by peter at August 30, 2008 08:19 AM

Yep, she will fit right in. Here's just a glimpse into her character. Evidently Green and Senator Palin are not best friends.

Palin appeared on the "The Bob and Mark Show", a radio show on KWHL radio, and as host Bob Lester called Lyda Green a "bitch" and a "cancer", Palin just laughed. (Green is a breast cancer survivor).

The governor's office eventually tried to spin the public relations disaster, releasing a statement reading, "Governor Palin was caught off guard by Bob Lester's reference to Senate President Lyda Green."

I don't buy it. Early on in the conversation before Palin started to crack up, Lester referred to Sen. Green as a jealous woman and a cancer. Palin, who knows full well Lyda Green is a cancer survivor, didn't do what any decent person would do, say, "Bob, that's going too far."

But as the conversation moved on, Lester intensified his attack on Green.

Lester questioned Green's motherhood, asking Palin if the senator cares about her own kids. Palin laughs.

Then Lester clearly sets the stage for what he is about to say by warning his large audience and Palin. He says, "Governor you can't say this but I will, Lyda Green is a cancer and a b----." Palin laughs for the second time.

Palin was a good pick. Most here may not like her, but she has energized the GOP base who didn't like McCain, and has also energized the 10% in middle who decide elections, and has picked up Hillary supporters who don't like Obama and feel that it's time for an intelligent woman to be in the race.

If Obama had picked Hillary, and he could have and should have, it'd be a different story. Heck, she won the primary if you go by votes cast. But Obama didn't make the right choice. He went with Joe Biden.

Hmm. Is John Edwards on a ticket somewhere?

Didja know she was second place in some Alaska beauty pageant? She is just an amazing woman...and a beauty pageant winner. She won a beauty pageant. And is an amazing mother. Did I mention she is a beauty pageant winner. She named her kids Trig, Piper, Willow, Bristol and Track...WTF? "Trig Paxson Van Palin"...WTF is wrong with this woman? Does she think life is a cheap romance novel?

The juicy rumor I'm hearing is that she was a big pothead during her first pregnancy. And, of course, she thinks the 100 million people who use or used pot should be in prison. Did I mention she was a beauty pageant winner?

"Palin boosts McCain's online haul

All that attention combined with the good vibrations from the base delivered McCain a financial shot in the arm yesterday.

His online haul from the Palin pick: $4.49 million, per a campaign aide." Politico

Didn't Obama pick Biden a week ago Thursday before his announcement Saturday? McCain made his pick and announced it sooner. So what, decisive action , not any 3 AM text message announcement!

"Trig Paxson Van Palin"

Please don't call me a rumor monger, but some rumors appear to be based on fact:

It seems that baby with Downs, "Trig Paxson Van Palin", may be Palin's 16 year-old daugther's kid. The thing is, when you see photo's of Palin when she is supposed to be well along with child...just saying. I wonder if she was covering the father's genetics? Fundamentalists do seem to like to keep things in the family. Daddy's little girl, indeed! Did I mention Palin was a beauty pageant winner?

Posted by phidipides at August 30, 2008 09:39 AM

Petey, Muck, jj and bagboy must be choking on their corn flakes after Ms. Palin's announcement...do you morons really believe that the Grand Canyon is six thousand years old...that we lived with dinosaurs...that Americans want a knuckledragger to run the show?

She is the best choice by far....no need to wipe your feet on this one...she will sink her own ship without our help....wait til the dirt comes out on the down syndrome child....my guess is it is the daughter's child...the age difference doesn't add up.

Posted by Goyo at August 30, 2008 09:50 AM

I heard she left a speech early because she went into labor. Sounds like she was really pregnant. Even if it were really her daughter's, that would make her an even bigger hero to the right--not aborting, raising her grandkid as her own. But I really doubt there's anything to those rumors.

Posted by CG at August 30, 2008 10:08 AM

"It seems that baby with Downs, "Trig Paxson Van Palin", may be Palin's 16 year-old daugther's kid."

Extremely unlikely. The highest risk factor for Down syndrome is the mother's age. The risk becomes significant at age 35, and increases as the mother gets older. Down syndrome babies are very rare in very young mothers.

Posted by Shirin at August 30, 2008 10:14 AM

Blisters Biden for his 30 year voting record on energy and our President for not getting ANWR passed when Congress was in more friendlier hands. What a woman, that picture with the NG rifle, I got that chill going up the leg that twetty talks about. Two old white guys, a black man and a white woman, who would have thunk it a year ago? Amazing where we've come from that gimmick pick 24 years ago to a serious female role this year in both parties. Took 24 years to get here again.

I remember Teddy Kennedy talking about education reform before NCLB. He almost had his bill during the Carter admin, but it wasn't all he wanted. He pulled the bill for next year...come 2001, "next year" came finally and NCLB passed and was signed into law by our president. One has to wonder if this is that second chance to get it right. We'll see in some 66 days.

Why didn't the Palin's let the law handle the 10 complaints they made against Wooten... oh wait, the law did, only 2 charges stuck. Wooten's still working. And the one about the stun gun on the son was because the boy wanted to know what it felt like... ah, those hearty Alaskan kids... probably plays hockey as well. The other charge that stuck was poaching a moose... probably pissed because he didn't share the meat... you know she eats Mooseburgers don't you!

Sounds more like they were harrasing the poor guy because it was a bitter divorce with her sister. Now they want to influence Judges in the custody case so he can't even see his own children... ah, another case of republi-con family values!!

If Wooten's guilty, throw the book at him but let the law handle it, don't abuse your power as Governor to ruin a man's life.

"Doesn't hatching rugrats in your 40's put the little critters at risk?"

Sure does. It's virtually a 100% probability that Palin's age is the reason her baby has Down syndrome. Women who get pregnant over 35 should always have their fetuses tested for Down syndrome.

And running for VP, let alone taking on the job, guarantees that she will have to virtually abandon her children. What kind of mother walks away from even a normal, healthy new infant, let alone one that needs the special and increased attention that a Down syndrome baby requires? This is going to put Dr. Laura and her ilk in a real quandary!

"Would she bomb Iran?"

Happy 105th Anniversary Harley Davison. Big party in Milwaukee with Bruce Springsteen.
My grandpa drove one to play piano in the silent movie theatres in Milwaukee circa 1916.

Also in June 1916, President Wilson secured passage of the Naval Appropriations Act, which set out to create a U.S. Navy equal to the most powerful in the world—Britain’s—by 1925. That November, Wilson was re-elected with the campaign slogan “He kept us out of the war.” His success was due less to his neutrality, however, than to his record on domestic policy, as U.S. public opinion—as well as the president’s own—had begun to move closer in line with those who favored intervention. By the following spring, Wilson had moved his country to the brink of war after continued German attacks on American interests at sea. On April 2, 1917, he would go before Congress to ask for a declaration of war. Four days later, the U.S. formally entered World War I.

It is with great irony that I report that the Christainist news groups I lurk (don't post) on are saying exactly this. Oh, do understand that they are extremely excited that the VP pick is as nuts religiously as they are. The fact that she has zero macroeconomic or international knowledge is lost on them. They are probably part of McCain's spike in contributions that peter keeps harping on about, and they will absolutely vote Republican come the fall (but then, unlike Rove, I never thought that was in doubt -- no matter how much they bitched about McCain, the fear of the scary black muslim anti-christ (your people have nothing but lies on your side, peter) would have gotten them to vote McCain in the end).

However, they are ALL, man and woman, DEEPLY concerned about Palin's abandoning of her motherly and wifely duties to run for office. I mean, some of them are beside themselves. But they'll still vote McCain in the end. They are like goddamn robots.
