its sad, my family has left my home city. the west bank, where i was born and raised is now, from what i've read, in jeopardy.

then, i hear mr. birthday cake plans to use this opportunity to go to g.n.o. to speak before gustav hits. imagine if obama went there to speak. would he be called presumptious?

i pray for my peeps in new orleans: my grandmother, aunts, uncles, and cousins. this is the place where my roots were set. i just hope the rnc does not politicize an impending tragedy, but then again, nothing is below their mien.

despicable bastards...

another thing: palin has foreign policy experience because alaska is close to russia? how stupid exactly is the constituency they appeal?

Anthony, that comment was made by none other than CindyLou in an interview defending her husband's choice in a V.P. Where in the world does the GOP get these women? I would venture to say that many women in the GOP are not very educated when it comes to politics, case in point.

So Palin, a hard religious puppet, opposes abortion. Which sets an irrevocable course. Then she doesn't believe in the use of contraception or education, which sets the scene for many more pregnancies than people want or need. Or would have, allowed a choice.
Is there a retarded ( I'll use that dreaded word here, rather than in my next point.) circular logic that disables or enables the least informed or the least intended to become the caretakers (Moms) of our progeny?
How about a 40+yo couple with a healthy sex life? No way to reduce pregnancy, and no way to stop it. The children of 40+ parents are much more prone to disabilities of all kinds : physical, mental, and sociological.
Some Righties are praising for Palin's continuing her pregnancy after learning of her child having Downs syndrome. You know, she had no choice. I call it callous and/or cruel to force a child to a lifetime of estrangement to Life. Call ME callous and cruel, but I can't elevate a Downie to the better part of living. No Renaissance kid, there.
So Palin makes her choice, then she thinks a Washington DC and traveling life is what a socially disabled infant will prosper in? Sure, the child will get the best of Socialist government health care, but it is human interaction, slow and sure, that reaches across that "bridge to nowhere."

Posted by Richard W. Crews at September 1, 2008 02:53 AM

I forgot to mention in previous post: Palin wants to take away your right of running your own future. Sexually healthy 40+yo people will running unfair risks on their life and their unintended children. She and her party want to take away choice. Make you live like her, except for that good health care of hers.

Excellent NY Times article by Paul Krugman.

However, when he said "It was the failure of FEMA and other degraded agencies to show up promptly with food, water and first aid" he failed to mention that with Karl Rove running things after New Orleans flooded following Katrina's landfall, the Bush administration actually intentionally withheld federal disaster relief from the devastated areas of Louisiana, including New Orleans, in a Karl Rovian attempt to smear Louisiana's Democratic governor and New Orleans' Democratic mayor ("Hey, look how incompetent those Democrats are") while 2) the Bush administration used the withheld disaster relief to try to blackmail Gov. Blanco into ceding control of her state's national guard units over to them.

Former Louisiana Gov. Blanco recently revealed that at the end of that week, days after New Orleans flooded, people were stranded on rooftops and people had died at the Superdome, she was escorted onto Air Force One where President George W. Bush once again demanded that she turn over her state's national guard units, letting the Bush administration federalize the disaster zone security (i.e. turn over security to crony private security companies like Blackwater).

So, yes, FEMA was weakened by neo-con Republican anti-competent-government madness, but the efforts by FEMA director Michael Brown and the FEMA disaster coordinator in Baton Rouge were severely undercut by the politicization of disaster relief efforts after New Orleans flooded.

Bush and Cheney were the corrupt ones behind the blackmailing of Louisiana Gov. Blanco. As was Karl Rove, who no doubt dreamt up in his feverish warped Republican brain the blaming of Democrats for the suffering and deaths in New Orleans...even as the Bush administration withheld or delayed the arrival of critical, life-saving federal disaster relief, as officially requested by Gov. Blanco forty-eight hours before Katrina made landfall. And Michael Chertoff (DHS) and Alberto Gonzales (AG) probably had a hand in all this as well.

This was a coordinated Bush administration effort during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to defame Democrats, to score political points...at the expense of countless Louisianan lives in New Orleans.

A year after this Bush/Cheney/Rove/Chertoff/Gonzales attempt to blackmail Gov. Blanco into handing over her state's security to them, the Bush administration got the Republican-controlled Congress to enact a law stating that in case of an "emergency" (as declared by Bush), Bush had sole authority over security in any state, bypassing any state's governor. Thus, what is happening in Louisiana today, security-wise...federal troops, Blackwater, etc., with even lapdog Republican Gov. Jindal having absolutely no say...just like the Fascist Republicans in the Bush administration planned.

Just before this "federalization" law passed one year after Katrina, all fifty state governors, both Republican and Democrats, wrote Congress in protest of this blatant theft of their constitutional authority over their state's security, but to no avail. The neo-con Republicans laughed and passed it anyway.

We are no longer a Republic. The federal government can usurp state rights anytime they want. State governors, state legislatures and state judiciary are now just figureheads, adjuncts to the neo-con Republican's imperial presidency...just as the nefarious, power-mad Bush administration planned.

hey judith, long time no talk to...

what is your p.o.v. concerning a woman, who seemed to be nominated just because she's a woman. no national security experience. can you see her facing off with putin? feels public schools should teach intelligent design. we are woefully behind other industrial nations in math and science? feels abortion (lets say pro-choice because you can be pro-choice but anti abortion) is off the table in all circumstances. does not believe in contraception and apparently prescribes to the gop mantra that contraception is "abortion." feels she is the answer to hilary's 18 million cracks. and she is "yup, yup," ready to be president on day one.

I just saw Laura Bush on CNN explain that the mistakes of Katrina on all levels have been corrected, and that she has cancelled her speech for tonight.

Laura looked good, despite years of stress putting those Barny-cam x-mas videos together. Of course it could be argued that watching them takes a much greater toll on the human brain.

Would they?

Where did you get this information from? Is this true? I have heard the part about Bushie blackmailing Blanco thing, but this part is disastrous.

Well Oracle, the control of Government will be the hands of the Democrats very shortly, and they can make that law null and void.

Posted by Judith at September 1, 2008 06:25 AM

TIKI, I also saw that interview. However, if I heard Laura right, she blamed everyone but her loving husband and his administration (including FEMA).

Since Laura is divorcing her fuckin' mistake as soon as he's dragged screaming from the White House, she's a tad more human to me.

As for experience being an important commodity as President, since when do Republicans need experience in their pols? Bush wasn't experienced when he was annointed President. And look what he's accomplished!!

So much for lack of experience.

Good morning anthony. Well, here is my take. Mrs. Beauty Queen Palin better pray that none of her children are ever raped and impreganted.

The Catholic women love her (I have a friend who is one of them).

She failed to do her part in passing legislation in Alaska that would have helped women and children in need.

She believes in killing women, children and men in Iraq, and so proud that her son can participate in this killing.

She obviously doesn't believe in birth control, as no woman in her right mind would have a child at 44 years of age.

She is such a wonderful Mother that she is willing, by choice I might add, to leave her kids behind while she seeks glory in the WH with an old fart.

On a serious note, I am one of those who is pro-Choice, but anti-abortion. I hate the fact that we cannot educate our young men and women to act responsibly in matters of sex by educating them.
I have never been able to understand the Right's position on banning abortion, but then refusing to do anything to help prevent abortions. It goes against everything that is logical and rationale.

Looks like Operation Republican Redemption is a bust, though speeches by Bush and Cheney are canceled, as McCain hoped, so it's not a total loss. The talking heads tried to help with their dire predictions, but all you had to do was look at the radar - the eye of the storm never really got organized enough to match Katrina. Maybe McCain will be able to make hay out of the cleanup, or go after Hannah like the ambulance chaser he appears; I hope the fact that Katrina victims who were still having trouble 3 years out makes the news, and it gets them more attention and help, but I doubt it. I'm sure McCain's relieved, considering Obama would be an impossible act to follow in terms of excitement, attendance, and interest. Of course, there are vendors in MN who might be pissed that they lost out on some cash, and the prostitutes they bussed in for the evangelical contingent might be overwhelmed for the first day since there'll be nothing else for the 'pukes to do, but hey, at least someone wins while McCain's running from photo op to photo op trying to look like he's in charge.

Politicize an impending tragedy?

See? Even the trolls see through McCain's blatant attempt to turn Gustav into a 'puke talking point. If the stoopid can see it, I'm sure regular human-Americans aren't fooled by McCain's attempt at "leadership."

Yeah Iamcoyote, I noticed that. Coming from jj it is pretty astounding. To actually think his party isn't trying to politicize the hurricane is even more astounding. McCain never met a hurricane he didn't like, especially one that keeps George Bush and Dickhead Cheney off the Republican stage.

Posted by Judith at September 1, 2008 07:06 AM

Anthony, sorry to hear about your hometown. I hope it's not as bad as it might be. You're right, if Obama went, he'd be criticized for acting like he was already prez, but if McCain goes, Obama will be criticized for not going, like he doesn't care and he's elitist.

I have a question about Florida. Is it in play? We don't hear too much about it this election cycle. From the polls in the post below, it's close. I know Obama was having trouble with the old Jewish vote, but the choice of Palin will surely help him there. One of the old Jews I know was on the fence, and is now squarely for Obama. Jews won't vote for a creationist who doesn't believe in science.

mc cain thinks hrc voters just wanted a woman. but it seems he missed the fact that a qualified woman is what drew her supporter to her.

Thank God they have the MSM to cover for their foolish shenanigans and allow them to beat a hasty retreat. Maybe next time, Capt McGOoP!

BTW, did any MSMer even dream to ask exactly what Codpiece in Chief Bush was "doing" about Gustav which supposedly would "prevent" his fine speech?

8 years of fubaring our country, now, lets use another storm to show we can get this shit right??? after voting against bills to help the region, he has the nerve to take all of his security to g.n.o. and the surrounding area to say, see, we will rebuild, get it right, vote repub, just don't hold my record concerning the gulf coast the last three years accountable.

In November 2006, then gubernatorial candidate Sarah Palin declared that she would not support an abortion for her own daughter even if she had been raped.

Granting exceptions only if the mother's life was in danger, Palin said that when it came to her daughter, "I would choose life."

So, this Mother would make her own daughter carry a baby to term. In other words, she would place a fetus above the rights of her own daughter.

At the time, her daughter was 14 years old. Moreover, Alaska's rape rate was an abysmal 2.2 times above the national average and 25 percent of all rapes resulted in unwanted pregnancies.

Mary, fixing the NO levees was a 6 year project. We're 3 years in.

It's amazing that the Dumbocrats think that problems can be fixed by just establishing a deadline. Like Obama's plan to eliminate the need for foreign energy in 10 years. How? Well, he won't tell you that, it's above his pay grade after all. (As are most issues.)

Just set a deadline, and hope a miracle happens. If not, run on the same issue in the even years forever.

Like Charles Barkley said: "Poor people have been voting for Democrats for the last 50 years. And they are still poor."

The Democrats sell you hope and dreams, and nothing else. Because getting out of poverty is about WHAT YOU DO, not anything that a self-serving Democratic politician promises on a campaign stump. And you fall for it every time.

Sorry muckpuppy:

Barkley said, "Every time I hear the word conservative it makes me sick to my stomach because they're really just fake Christians, as I call them." Blitzer asks Barkley to elaborate a bit on the phrase he used, "fake Christians." Barkley does so, essentially accusing conservatives of being hypocritical. Blitzer warns Barkley that he's probably going to a lot of "feedback" about his harsh criticism of the GOP, but Barkley is unfazed, offering this priceless response: "They can't do anything to me. I don't work for them."
Posted by Seven of Six at September 1, 2008 09:01 AM

Here we go. Democrats are sexist.

The GOP has also implied that Democratic reactions to Palin's selection are sexist, particularly since, they contend, her time as Alaska's governor gives her the edge over Barack Obama in executive experience. Obama, 47, has spent almost 12 years in office, all of it as a lawmaker _ eight years as an Illinois state senator and nearly four as a U.S. senator. Palin's total is 12 _ she spent 10 as a city council member and mayor, and nearly two as governor.

"If they want to go down that route, in all candor, she has far more experience than Senator Obama does," McCain said Sunday in St. Louis.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/31/alaska-national-guard-gen_n_122860.html

Posted by Judith at September 1, 2008 09:47 AM

Oops, not only does Palin not know what the v.p. does, but she doesn't really know what she does (or someone is an out and out liar):

Maj. Gen. Craig Campbell, adjutant general of the Alaska National Guard, considers Palin "extremely responsive and smart" and says she is in charge when it comes to in-state services, such as emergencies and natural disasters where the National Guard is the first responder.

But, in an interview with The Associated Press on Sunday, he said he and Palin play no role in national defense activities, even when they involve the Alaska National Guard. The entire operation is under federal control, and the governor is not briefed on situations.

Posted by Judith at September 1, 2008 09:49 AM

Wow, Palin's 17-yr-old daughter is pregnant

Having sex before marriage--tsk tsk. I guess the abstinence only education she surely got from her parents didn't work too well. Well, I wish Bristol and new soon-to-be husband the best.

Posted by CG at September 1, 2008 09:56 AM

Well, CG, all parents can do is teach their children right from wrong. In the end, we all make our own decisions. And no form of birth control is 100% effective. The amazing thing is that Bristol is getting tons of support from her family and her boyfriend, under what will be an intense amount of scrutiny and judgement from the opposition party.

The important thing for Bristol is that her family is here to support her, not judge her. This is an amazing time to showcase women's rights. We're going to see that as a major topic during this campaign season. No better example than the Palin family.

2 things gopper scum don't do well. Humor, and being clever.

But some asswipes reckoning, every action taking by politicians would be politicizing the subject of the act. But that isn't reality. Perhaps some asswipes might want to look up some definitions of politization before opening their ignorant asses, er, mouths.

Since McCain isn't the President, or in charge of ANY aspect of the Federal Government, what exactly is his purpose in getting underfoot wherever he went to join in the Hurricane Preparations? Is he doing it as a Senator, is that it? Than what's the Governor of the 3rd smallest State in the Union doing with him?

Looks like a photo op for political gain, since he can't actually do anything except get in the way and get his face in front of the cameras.

And if he wants to organize his network to be ready to send aid and volunteers to places that need it is determined what those are, like Barack Obama is doing, why does he have to make it a campaign event, unless he wants to politicize the disaster for his electoral gain.

As compared to demanding the corporate whores in the White House do their fucking job and send aid and reconstruction to NO and the Gulf Coast after Katrina. And don't forget, asswipes, the GOP was still in control of Congress at the time.

Posted by Duckman GR at September 1, 2008 11:35 AM

Don't have a link since I'm copying from another message board:

Politico's Carrie Budoff Brown reports: At a press avail in Monroe, Mich., Barack Obama on Palin: "Back off these kinds of stories."

"I have said before and I will repeat again: People's families are off limits," Obama said. "And people's children are especially off-limits. This shouldn't be part of politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin's performance as a governor and/or her potential performance as a vice president. So I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories. You know my mother had me when she was 18 and how a family deals with issues and teenage children, that shouldn’t be a topic of our politics."

I'm glad he was so strong in his statement.

She's down to 36% approval amongst women in this afternoon's CNN poll. The right wing comment boards are full of reservations about a) her membership in the secessionist organization in Alaska and b) the story of her taking an 11 hour flight and a subsequent two hour drive after water breaking with a premature (36 week) baby. All that to get to a hospital without a state of the art ICU unit -- something that is considered a "must" for premature babies.

Although the Democrats would benefit from her staying on the ticket, I hope for her sake, and her family, that she backs out quickly and with grace.

Tonight it occurred to me: Why did McCain/Palin ("the hothead and the airhead") *have* to revel that her daughter is pregnant?

Seriously, WHO is exploing WHOSE child here?

If, as McCain/Palin complained, the problem was all the horrible liberal bloggers, why couldn't they just ignore them like media does?

Or, if in fact the rumors were beginning to affect their own Republican base (which I know for a fact it was), then couldn't they have squelched the rumors some other way -- certainly there must be some obvious proof, say, the first picture of Mom and Baby in the hospital bed?

I mean, it's not like the "my daughter is 5 months pregnant" announcement has killed the rumor anyway, since it's just an assertion from someone who is rumored to have previously lied about the same topic. A mom/baby picture would have been much better.

UNLESS you wanted to play the "my opponent is playing dirty" card by revealing an embarrassing secret about your child and then blaming your opponent.

After all we are talking about the campaign of McDirty -- who told all manner of jokes about Chelsea -- and who just hired the same Republican operative who spread the "McCain has secret black children" rumors in S Carolina in 2000.
