This is where the cardinal rule of Bush/Cheney/Repukehood - never ever EVER admit a mistake - at long last strangles them - slowly, excruciatingly, and hopefully for good.
Posted by Sharkbabe at September 3, 2008 12:43 PMI see Obama is going on OReilly tonite at the same time McCain speaks....this smells like a set-up to me. The right will easily paint Obama as "classless" for interrupting Flyboy's speech.....maybe I'm reading something into nothing, but I'd think twice if I was Obama's guys about the timing.
Posted by T2 at September 3, 2008 12:59 PMTop of the TPM blog right now -- an open mike discussion by Mike Murphy and Peggy Noonan when they thought they were off the records.
The short: they think the race is over and that this was a disasterous pick. Murphy thinks Palin will sink the ticket in the purple states.
What's *really* interesting here is that both of them -- and one a supposed journalist -- are saying very different things in public. Typical Republican dishonesty.
Posted by Anonny at September 3, 2008 01:14 PMugh...just saw a photo of Bristol's Baby Daddy arriving in MN and being greeted by McPOW like he's a star. Poor kid, 17 years old, knocks up his girlfriend, the whole world finds out about it and now he's gotta go on worldwide TV and gladhand a bunch of Evangelical Nuts who, a week ago, would have cast him straight to Hell for his crime against Jesus (as, apparently, his mom-in-law to be would have done also). If ever there will be a poster-boy for GOP Evangelico-Hipocrasy, he's it. 17. A night he'll never forget.
Posted by T2 at September 3, 2008 01:16 PMT2: And if he were black? Especially with the anger and threatened violence on his MySpace page?
I mean, there isn't a more stark illustration of the racism that still exists than this double standard.
Posted by Anonny at September 3, 2008 01:21 PMGodfather McDoof to Levi: "Welcome to the GOoP Family of Hypocrisy, kid! Just keep your mouth shut and fly zipped from nopw on".
Levi: "Yessir, I'm just a little redneck!"
McDoof: "all right, good boy. Do you know where Iraq is?"
Peggy Noonan rushes in): "Sorry, daddy! I made a big mistake!.
McDoof: "Mistake, eh? Go to your room, young lady. I'll be dealing with you later...."
Posted by euzoius at September 3, 2008 01:45 PMannony, no need to set up a series of "What If's"...this whole sad spectacle pretty much works on it's own. I'm pretty sure what would have happened to me if I'd got some girl preggers at 17. And it wouldn't have involved partying at a convention. Some Family Values.
Posted by T2 at September 3, 2008 01:49 PMT2: true, true.
But it's a good example to use if you encounter anyone who believes racism isn't much of a factor anymore.
Posted by Anonny at September 3, 2008 01:56 PMTalking to a colleague who quipped, "If McCain drops her, it's a quick death for his campaign. If he keeps her, it's a long, slow death for his campaign and the GOP. So let's hope he keeps her."
I think that's about right, eh?
Posted by Danton at September 3, 2008 01:57 PMDanton: I think that's becoming the CW (conventional wisdom), although of course not many will say it out loud just yet.
What strikes me is how the financial community has reacted to Palin. No, not the WSJ editorial board, which was hijacked by the Flat Earthers years ago. But people like the Economist and Financial Times. They see Palin as a disaster, not as a campaign move, but as a potential leader of the US. Which, of course she is.
The financial community has already made peace with the idea of an Obama presidency -- the economic summit this summer put any remaining doubts on that topic to bed. I strongly suspect that those of them who aren't hopelessly partisan will work to sway the election Obama's way in order to provide economic stability and common sense.
