In another edition of the Republican Double Standard:
What do you think the financial media would have reported if Obama gave a speech and the stock market crashed the next day?
Posted by Anonny at September 4, 2008 03:21 PMAll the conventions in the world aren't going to change the basic facts---the US economy is cratering, and a return to prosperity will be extremely, extremely difficult, if not simply impossible.
The assets of the US are declining in value at record rates as the result of the housing bubble and the fraudulent balance sheets of American companies, especially financial companies. The American banking sector is insolvent and is being propped up by historic loans from the Fed, including loans to unregulated investment banks. That's all that's keeping the "system" running.
The dollar is a wrecked currency which has only shown recent improvement because the rest of the world is also entering into a severe recession. Our national debt will top $10 trillion in a few months and will quickly roar even higher. The deficit this year alone will be $500 billion.
The people have no savings, and are crushed by debt that they will have to painfully pay off over decades. Banks now refuse to lend and we have entered a credit crisis, where even established busnesses are having their credit lnes cancelled. Small businesses are failing in droves, there is no hiring, the actual unemployment rate is in the double digits.
The GNP numbers have been fake for years now, as foreign investors are finally figuring out. The "economy" literally could not function without the massive daily capital investment by foreign countries (China, Japan, Russia) in our public and private debt.
Basically, "conservative" (ha-ha) Repubs acted like they could do ANYTHING to the economy and it wouldn't matter. "Reagan showed deficits don't matter" Pinhead Cheney growled in late 2002. Well, you know what, if you want a stong dollar, they fucking do. If you want the gub'mint to be able to DO anything other than pay interest on the debt, they do, you incompetent reckless fuckhead.
The walls are going to start closing in on BushAmerica, and there's little we can do now. We're bankrupt, both as a people and a nation. The rest of the world is figuring it out, and that will be the end of the little "global economy". The Repubs are the party that wrecked the country. Not that the Dems plan on mentioning it.
Posted by euzoius at September 4, 2008 03:53 PMPity the poor SOB who is elected, for they shall be buried by the coming global sh*tstorm.
Being born at the end of The Great Depression, I never imagined I would go out during the Greater Depression.
Depressing, indeed.
Who to blame? Bush, for sure but he had the willing enablers in both republican and democtratic controlled congress.
Sad.

Whew! Thanks headxray. For a minute I didn't know what to be fearful of. Competent republi-cons, Werewolves, Vampires or Sasquatch. I know none of these things are real, but I couldn't help peering into the shadows when the house creaks. As you say, I need to be fearful of mooslims...wait a second...doesn't Palin gut and eat mooslims? Eeuuwwwww! Count her kids tonight. If one is missing and Cindy McVicodin looks younger...just saying...

No shit.
Just as I thought about the GOP, all little cry babies when the tables are turned. Mom, those horrible media types aren't playing fair with us kids. GROW UP AND GET OVER IT!! You spent eight years trying to destroy anyone with a D after their name. Just maybe the media is beginning to grow some balls and start reporting the truth about who you are and what your agenda is.
Over the last few days, the McCain campaign has pushed back hard against what it perceives to be unfair and sexist news coverage of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. The revelation that Palin's 17-year-old daughter Bristol is pregnant sent shockwaves through the political world, and fueled the Republicans' belief that journalists had crossed the line of responsible reporting. But some in the media say accusations of bias are unfair, and that they are being unjustly criticized for looking into Palin's background and experience.
The Politico's Roger Simon says that examining the record of the Alaska governor, of whom not much is known about, is a legitimate line of inquiry for the press. Simon facetiously asks if reporters "should have stuck to the press release like how she opposed the Bridge to Nowhere (after she supported it)."
And Time’s Joe Klein believes the McCain team's attacks on the media are simply a tactic meant to thwart inquiries into Palin's history. "This is a smokescreen, intended to divert attention from the very real and responsible vetting that is taking place in the media --about the substance of Palin's record as mayor and governor," Klein writes.

Posted by Judith at September 4, 2008 06:20 PMThat's ok Judith. It's nice to hear a little pushback from the media.

"The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country."

Two black people! Two shots!
Posted by phidipides at September 4, 2008 06:46 PMThe east US is evil and the west is great. Maybe Obama will win VA, NC, GA, FL after all. The republicans don't seem to want their votes.

Thanks Snark. Maybe it's a beginning, I hope. With all those media types in Alaska right now, maybe one or two will report the truth.
