Like most of us, I'm not capable of evaluating the top economists in the field as to which one most deserves the Nobel. It's been clear for 8 or 9 years (before his NY Times column gig) that Krugman's work made him one of the few truely elite in the profession, so that he eventually won is no surprise.
But, the right wing may be correct to suspect that the Nobel committee -- or at least some of their members -- had ulterior motives for chosing this particular year to recognize Krugman. With the world economy failing and Krugman's predictions -- some dating back to 1999 -- about Bushonomics now being proven 100% correct, this election year is as good a time as any to remind the American electorate who caused this mess, who correctly predicted this mess, and by extension which candidate (McCain) is least likely to get us out of the mess.

Posted by snark at October 13, 2008 09:58 AMWell, this selection is a final insult to Bush. :)
Posted by Greup at October 13, 2008 10:19 AMGood for Krugman!
Posted by iamcoyote at October 13, 2008 10:49 AMWhatever Krugman's economic expertise, he was the FIRST major columnist to begin declaring (at the height of Glorious Leader's power) that our littlest emperor was an utter disaster, charlatan and liar.
And for that he won't be forgotten by grateful progressives.....

Actually, he saw it in 2000 when he reported on junior's economic plans.
He later said that the reason he saw through the Iraq nonsense in early 2002(!) was that he recognized the same pattern of lies that he'd seen from Bush on economic matters.
Of course, the problem with being ahead of your time is that you are demeaned by the intelligensia as a fringe element and later, when proven right, people still remember you as a fringe element.
