That would required a tectonic shift in how journalists operate. You would probably have to replace 95% of of the existing journalists.
Consider who pursues a career in journalism. In college, the journalism major is generally one of the easy paths, like mass communications. People who enjoy precision and accuracy strongly tend to go into other fields, like sciences, engineering, law or medical.
Every time I've read an article on an event that I knew about first-hand I've found all kinds of errors. It's just the nature of the people who perform that work.
Add to that the fact that the managers in the press value deadlines over detail, and you have a losing combination.
Posted by Anonny at October 28, 2008 07:02 AMHe’s a nigger! Someone yelled out repeatedly at a Sarah Palin rally yesterday
Actually what that person said was "redistributor!", which was perfectly consistent with the speech Palin was giving. I too thought it was "he's a nigger", but I was wrong.
But you are right that YouTube, the leftwing grass roots media, and early voting have changed elections for the better in this country.
Posted by Anonny at October 28, 2008 07:13 AMI updated the story, Anonny, thanks for that.
I heard the audio the first time and I swear I heard the N word. Oh well.
Posted by paradox at October 28, 2008 07:26 AMThe site says: (only portion copied)
Breaking it down, we come up with the following results:
Kos Democrats +9 - Obama 50.7, McCain 42.4 (Obama +8.3)
Ras Democrates +6 - Obama 49.6, McCain 44.0 (Obama +5.6)
2000 election Democrats +4 - Obama 49.3, McCain 45.3 (Obama +4)
2006 election Democrats +2 - Obama 48.0, McCain 45.7 (Obama +2.3)
2004 election Even - Obama 47.3, McCain 46.5 (Obama +0.8)
So as we can see... turnout is an obvious key to the election. If Democrats turn out in at a 4% advantage or higher, then Obama will win fairly comfortably based on the composite internal average polling breakdowns. If Republicans defy conventional wisdom and turn out at a pace somewhere like they did in 2004 or even 2006 then McCain is well within striking distance based on these same calculations.
Has anyone seen this? Yes, it is a “right” website.
Not sure “how accurate” their calculations are ….
But I will agree with them on one fact…..
Turnout is an obvious key to the election.
So GOTV!
Hey Katherine Hunter, you wouldn't be the Katherine Hunter historical novelist, by any chance?
Posted by paradox at October 28, 2008 08:19 AMKJS, cornholio troof has trolled here before, and is always wrong. Linking to that shit's like petey linking to Malkin...
Posted by iamcoyote at October 28, 2008 08:28 AMYes, iamcoyote, that is a wingnut website. If that is their best scenario for a Republican victory then the situation is indeed good for Democrats.
Hoping for high Republican turnout when Obama is winning early voting 60-40 is like waiting for Godot.
Posted by Anonny at October 28, 2008 08:43 AMAnonny, you're right, I just don't see it. The few 'pukes left around here are clearly demoralized - even my office godbot has turned off Rush and is back to gospel music. She couldn't stand the hate oozing from her radio. She still likes Palin, but doesn't want to be associated with skinheads. I don't blame her, and it makes me respect her a lot more, even if she still does believe in an invisible sky fairy. If you gotta embrace a supernatural mythology, it might as well be a loving and caring one, rather than an authoritative and punishing one. Yay for her.

Right. One encouraging sign lately has been the fight back against the meme that Christians vote Republican. The fact is that Christians are split, and non-born agains are predominantly Democratic. The Matthew 25 group is a great example of this pushback.
Something else my wife has detected (she visits wingnut web sites so that I don't have to) is a strong undercurrent among the anti-abortion crowd that a) the Republicans haven't done shit in terms of actually delivering any results on this issue despite 28 years since Reagan got elected, and b) that outside of abortion the Democrats basically own all the Jesus issues. If the Democrats can make good on the "reduce the abortion rate" narrative in the next 4 years the wingnut movement will lose the segement of their movement that buys the anti-abortion line but hates everything else about Republicans.
Of course, the angry Republican base is convinced that McCain's mistake was being too moderate. They are sure that if McCain focused his campaign on abortion that he would have won in a landslide. Which is why that party is going to spend serious time in the political wilderness before they get their bearings back.

Sorry, not sure what U mean by that?
I provided the link, to show where the numbers came from. I also pointed out it was from a "right wing website"
My sole point in posting the numbers, was to indicate that some people can play the numbers to make it seem McCain does have a chance. I also indicated the only thing I agreed with was
the voter turnout was/is the key to the election.
I am sorry, if u feel I stepped out-of-bounds by linking to a right-wing website.
No out-of-bounds, just wanted to reiterate that cornholio is a known quantity. Known to lie.

And Yay for YOU.
I am happy that you no longer need to feed your ulcers with that Right Wing Radio crap.
Speaking of feeding ulcers. I'm on my way to see my GI Doc now.
"It’s good for the business."
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, there was a wonderful company called Tandem Computers.
Founded in the 1970s it had a strong employee-centric culture. The CEO, a Texan named Jimmy Treybig, actually said to the Wall Street Journal in 1982 that "Tandem is a Socialist company.". Wall Street loved Tandem back then, and such statements didn't bother investors. My, how times have changed.
Tandem, which was headquarterd a few short blocks from the similarly employee-centric Apple Computers, inspired rare employee loyalty. The phrase "It would be good for Tandem" was frequently heard in discussions between groups, and indicated that almost universally the employees put the good of the overall company ahead of the good of their own little work area.
Times change, of course. In 1992 the company had it's first layoff of 700 people (they called themselves "Jimmy's 700 club"), which of course was just the first of a series. In 1994 it was revealed that Jimmy had lied to employees about his compensation -- big time. In 1996 he was dumped by the board and in 1997 the new CEO sold Tandem to Compaq, making a cool $50M for himself in the process. It took Compaq only 4 months to break their promises to Tandem employees, including cancelling the sacred sabbatical benefit. So it goes.
But I'm always on the lookout for companies who echo the values of the old Tandem. Sounds like AMD might have been one. Google is supposed to be one now. But such companies are even rarer now than they were in the 1970s.
