Wow. You sound like older African Americans who are on pins and needles wondering if something bad is going to happen to Obama. (i.e. Kennedys, King, and many others too numerous to name). You just have to relax and just let things play themselves out and deal with the outcome. I am confident that the Secret Service is completely capable of protecting Obama.
If Obama wins, and I largely agree with E.J. Dionne, that he is truly a leader of the 21th century. He has inspired an entirely new generation, motivated people like ourselves and reached out to independents and republicans to build a majority coalition.
By all indications, he should win. If he does, I do hope that he governs as a Centrist. That means that he is going to need congress to reach across the isles to those bastard Repugs and find common ground. Although my first instinct is to break it off in their asses if Obama wins, I know that that is not good for the country. I am more interested in undoing BUSH-SHIT and putting the country back on track domestically and internationally.
Angelic? Far from it, he is an egotistical politician who is very opportunistic. That is not a bad thing because he is on the verge of becoming president. Something that Turkana reminded me of during some of our debates, we have to hold Mr. Obama accountable and not go along with every idea.
Personal Advice: Turn off the news and go take a walk or go for a ride with the radio on a music station and forget about politics until tomorrow. Obama is gonna be ok....promise.
Posted by angryman at November 3, 2008 07:52 AMIt's usually only too easy for Brits to adopt superior airs when it comes to the topic of guns and the perils of public life. However, it wasn't many years ago that the IRA got very close to killing Thatcher and her cabinet, when they blew up the hotel where the Conservative Party Conference was taking place. Of course, it's clearly pretty easy to obtain guns in America, and shooting a President is easier than planting bombs, particularly if the gunman is prepared to die afterwards, like those morons who recently plotted against Obama.
I feel sorry for the Obama kids, because the family's life is not going to be at all normal when he's in the White House. The main thing is, I just said "when", not "if".
Dittos to the Luck and Safety...and, I so agree with you about the "cult of personality"...I do NOT see Obama as any kind of saviour (except from BUSH/McSHAME/SCARAH)..nor do I expect him, if elected, to do everything the way I'D LIKE IT!!! But, sadly, I'm expecting that soon some on the left will quickly begin to bash him if HIS agenda isn't THEIRS!!! That will be as stupid as the worshipful wingnuts on the right have been about BUSH/CHENEY...can we finally enter a time when people, read, think critically, compromise to make SOME PROGRESS, consider ALL PEOPLE...listen to someone with some intelligence and ponder possibilities??????!!!!!!! That's what I HOPE FOR!!

America had a lot of lone nut gunmen (and women) who took pot shots at the president and candidates over a quarter century ago. Two Kennedys in the 1960s. Wallace was paralyzed in 1972. Ford came close to getting hit twice in 1976. Reagan was hit and nearly killed in 1981.
The 1981 event was the catalyst for a complete rethinking of the Secret Service approach to security. There hasn't been even a close call since.

The only thing I worry about is McLame and Caribou Barbie stoking the flames of hate saying "Obama pals around with Terrorist" and nut jobs yelling "Kill him."

There may very well be some reprises of Oklahoma City, sad to say.
But the Timothy McVeigh types are almost certainly NOT up to the task of taking out a president. We're talking Darwin Award candidates, here. Wingnuts are, by self-selection, poor thinkers. They universally have two major blind spots. First, they select facts to fit their hopeful theories, not vice versa. Which means they'll ignore obvious flaws in their plans. Second, they hold such cartoon-like stereotypes of outsiders that they are incapable of understanding how/why outsiders act the way they do or, more importantly, anticipating the outsider's response to something they do. So, if they come up with a multi-step plan to commit a crime, they won't properly think through how the security force will a) have anticipated them in the first place and b) will react after, say, step 3 alerts the security force.
As stated before, these are people who think feminists are pro-bin Laden. They are that clueless. This is why everytime one of their plots is revealed to the press it's clear they were still in the early stages of planning.
