Comments: It's time to talk to Iran*

Tom who?

So what, we're going to have adult negotiations? What a freaking concept.

Pick an issue, any issue, compare the GOP's stance of the last 8 years (at least) to Obama's and/or the Dems, and tell me why we should ever listen to the Goppers again?

Maybe they'd be up for a game of chess.

It is like a breath of fresh air to hear someone talk intelligently about Foreign Policy. In contrast to "fight them over there", "bring it on", "if you are not with us you are against us" and declaring Nations Terrorist States. And too many other idiotic BUSHISMS that are too stupid to repeat. Geo W. Bush Will You Please Go Now!

Maybe they'd be up for a game of chess.

Funny, I immediately thought of the computer in that old movie WarGames with Matthew Broderick.

But it seems to me that Iran's been playing chess all along while the neocons were playing checkers. And losing badly.

We have very dear friends who are Iranian expats. They left the country as teens following the revolution. They still have most of their families there. There is tremendous good will towards the United States amongst the average Iranian. Our poor handling of the situation, since the hostage crisis quite frankly, has miraculously done little to damage that. The only reason we have anything to fear from the Iranians is because they are afraid of us. They have no intent of obliterating Israel. They support Hezbollah because Hezbollah is against what we express as being our interest in the region. The whole situation is a defacto "cold war". If we settle things with the Iranians they will have no incentive to support Hezbollah as a "satellite client".

I can't help but liken the situation to our continued pointless embargo against Cuba. The policy, once set, has proven almost impossible to alter. Much to everyone's mutual detriment.
