What a bunch a revisionist crap...

Posted by peter at November 21, 2008 06:08 AM

Looking forward, why isn't the 'change' Obama admin. bringing in some great progressives like;

Joseph Stiglitz is a Nobel Prize-winner in economics and a critic of corporate globalization. He should be Treasury Secretary.

Senator Russ Feingold is a champion of civil liberties. He should be Attorney General.

Robert Greenstein is head of Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. He would make a much better OMB director.

Arlene Holt Baker, executive vice president of the AFL-CIO, would be a tremendous Secretary of Labor.

And if Obama really wanted change, if he really wanted to honor progressives who backed him early on and then did the grunt work against McCain, he’d nominate Dennis Kucinich as Secretary of State.

No, we continue to get Clinton retreads even Larry Summers’s name is still being bandied about for Treasury, even though Summers, while Clinton’s Treasury Secretary, forced the deregulation of our financial markets and imposed disaster capitalism on Russia.

That's the 'change' we are looking forward to...

Peter, you are in denila dude. Better get a life and move on.

paradox, I don't think Bush is stupid although he is incurious, and he is an idealouge and he is used to getting his way and he doesn't think he needs to listen to to other folks and points of view. Everything that you say can still follow from that.

Now Srah Palin, she truly is a tiger petter...no argument there.

Posted by John B. at November 21, 2008 06:37 AM

speaking of revisionist crap,
how is it that the right are now calling this economic disaster obama's recession?

Posted by anthony at November 21, 2008 06:41 AM

How in the hell can it be Obama's recession Anthony? He hasn't done anything...ever, to move it one way or another.

Posted by peter at November 21, 2008 06:45 AM

Peter
You are right on with your comments...but you know that will never happen....change is just a buzz word.
Yes, some change will come, we have nowhere to go but up...that's easy. Whatever change happens is usually superficial, enough to demonstrate to the American public that, yes we are different than the previous admin. But I'll be a grown up and see what happens.
Ok, Ms Palin is hot! Maybe she can be our mascot or something akin to that... (Yes, I'm aware of her mental abilities)

Posted by Parallax at November 21, 2008 06:48 AM

Well, that is what your friend Rush is calling it Peter. It's an Obama's recession. That's how either ignorant Rush he is or manipulative he is. Take your choice.

Posted by Judith at November 21, 2008 06:51 AM

Judith, losers always blame the winners, and the right wingnut brand is in the remainder bin along with petey's hero Not-Joe the Not-Plumber's supposed book even before some out of touch dork publishes it. All that's left of the 'pukes is skinheads like Not-Joe, felons, perverts and the idiots who blow them. Like petey.

Posted by iamcoyote at November 21, 2008 07:19 AM

Well, that is what your friend Rush is calling it Peter. It's an Obama's recession.

Exactly right Judith. My wingnut friends are already sending me the e-mails how this is Obama's recession... first time Petie has sounded rational.

And if Obama really wanted change, if he really wanted to honor progressives who backed him early on and then did the grunt work against McCain...

I think Obama is looking for competent government first... if you haven't noticed all these appointments are way Progressive compared to the neo-cons bu$h appointed.

His lower level cabinet will have a lot of Progressives.

Speaking of Progressives, I have to give a big shout out to my Congressman... Raul Grijalva. He was named co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. He helped Obama with the Hispanic vote throughout the Southwest.

Talking about Joe, seems Gov. Sherod has suspended for a month a Democratic state employee for being hyper-partisan by looking into and providing info of Joe's personal afairs.

Parallax, I even see team Obama is looking at several of Tenet's deputies for intel matters.

More references of Rush, the entertainer, take anything he says and combine it with $1.31 and it might get you a cup of coffee, somewhere.

Posted by Seven of Six at November 21, 2008 07:45 AM

Lets see, how many of these folks Obama's appointing voted for the AUMF? 23 Senators and 133 Congressmen voted against it. Where are they? Where are their considerations by team Obama?

Posted by peter at November 21, 2008 07:50 AM

today is a good day as any to get a final analysis/conclusion of his tenure out of the way, better to get it over with.

Groan. Can't we just let him go? I can't go through the litany again. Worst ever, getting away with it, leaving a mess behind, I get it.

Posted by MaskedVigilante at November 21, 2008 07:50 AM

I agree with many things but in some respects I think that Dubya fully believes and suscribes to the Norquist "drown the guv't in a bathtub" mentality through his constant pillaging of the treasury for his crony corporate buddies. From failed wars paid for on the Murkan credit card and on his tab, no bid contracts to Darth or large pioneer RNC political donors, and to the laissez- greed- fox-guarding-the-hen- house governance style...he's a privatize the profits, socialize the losses for my buddies kind of believer.

The only thing is that a funny thing happened on the way down the drain..apparently the suction whirlpool force became too great and those pesky serfs and the masses realized (perhaps a bit too late) that good government and governance is essential for a healthy, thriving, prosperous, and productive society. They realized that and that all those history books about the causes of failed great societies in the past were somehow correct about a gov't filled with checks and balances and the huge importance of a 4th Estate.

Also, repukes mistakenly greatly misunderestimated the time frame for the impact to be felt from this style of crooked governance. Apparently 8 years was just a wee bit too long before the serfs/world (and yes even wall street corporate murka) would start reeling from the effects of this amoral flim flam of an ideology. And ultimately (hopefully) what might have happened instead is that the repuke brand has been drowned in that tub.

Ironically for a government of/for/by the people that the repugs so hate and are always seeking to dismantle and destroy, they always want to run and be in charge of it.

And lastly, it's apparent, that the W in Dubya's name really does stand for Worst....as in Worstpreznitevah!

Paradox correctly identifies the stolen election of 2000 as the tip-off of what was to come. Rigging your brother's state to cheat in very specific precincts to defraud the vote overall, then getting your dad's Supreme Court to intervene. I've printed this before, but here is the dissent from Justice Stevens in Bush v Gore:
"Although we may never know with complete certainty the identity of the winner of this year’s Presidential election, the identity of the loser is perfectly clear. It is the Nation’s confidence in the judge as an impartial guardian of the rule of law."
Yes, sadly, it is we, the people, who sat idly by and watched our government stolen in broad daylight.

We are teatering on a depression. Paulson's response is pathetic. If this had happened 6 months ago, we would not make it to the next administration.

Posted by allansfca at November 21, 2008 08:10 AM

As far as the CNN's 'funny' video showing the world's leaders seemedly not being very friendly to our President Bush. Jeanne Moos had the shots that Obama fan Rick Sanchez failed to show. Apparently President Bush didn't have "cooties" as Rick laughingly refered to this reception, but had already greeted and warmly received by the visiting heads of state. CNN fixed this impression using the usually funny Jeanne Moos.

The turd droppin' GOoPer elephant has now been branded with "Repub Depression" in giant letters, and properly so. And it appears that things are just getting worse. "Conservatives" wrecked the country.

Americans (including cretinous Repubs) better hope that Obama is a better president than FDR, or we'll all be eating cat food in a couple years, and peter's low cost brand won't even have any fish by-products.

Now, everyone with a brain hates Republicans. Soon, even low income whites will hate Repubs. peter, you're a leper.

You'll be settin' up a lot fewer folding chairs and mopping up a lot less coffee spills at your upcoming Repub "meetings", even in Tex-ass. You're in the wilderness and you clowns hate science so much you don't even have a compass! Happy wandering!

Posted by euzoius at November 21, 2008 08:36 AM

And once again...we care about if a Miserable Failure-loser lame duck pres who's a proven pathological liar was greeted or snubbed because why?

Do you see the problem...no one with half a thinking brain and a real life gives a shit if he was greeted or apparently snubbed or not except for Rush luvin dead enders and the kewl kid media conventional wisdom generators who have apparently have nothing better to report.

And to be consistent, I'm all for correcting the record..it should be done..., but as long as that record mentions the whole truth and the facts and reported it as such: "The worst, president ever and the man who lied us into a war of choice and is responsible for the biggest financial meltdown ever was not snubbed." You see the story really wasn't even newsworthy at all in the first place...but if you want to be correcting and reporting facts and records...well that's how it should have been clarified by Ms. Moos.

Posted by emal at November 21, 2008 08:44 AM

Yeah, Bushco thought that by drowning the gov't in the bathtub, they'd be able to get rid of all the social programs, because 'pukes hate helping people. Hilariously, their cunning plan backfired and they created the opening to introduce newer, better, social programs. Bwahaha! Those pukes can't do anything right!

Posted by iamcoyote at November 21, 2008 08:52 AM

Hey! I've been unbanned! Thanks to the unbanners!

Look, this isn't Obama's economy. Don't believe anyone trying to propagandize the market correction as Obama's fault. It's just not true.

The stock market is a discounting mechanism of the future. This bear market is a reflection of what investors are anticipating down the road. But Obama hasn't even implemented any policies and was rather vague during his campaign about what he wanted to do. Who knows what he'll do when he gets in. He has to work with Congress on everything.

This economy is in the tank because in the past decade, we've had two massive bubbles break. So much wealth has been destroyed from the stock market collapse and the real estate collapse.

(At least the gap between the rich and poor had narrowed dramatically the past few months!)

In addition, during the first half of the year energy prices were sky high. Those are the numbers that are being reported in earnings now. That folks were shopping less because they were sending more money to OPEC when they fueled their gas tank.

The Federal Reserve has mismanaged interest rates. They were too low for too long, then they raised them too high for too long because they worried about inflation. As I blogged recently, exactly the opposite is the risk here. Not inflation.

Anyways, as I've noted on the blog, people do have more money in their pockets right now due to falling gasoline prices and also because they lost their homes. Gas is under $2 around the country. And if you had a $2500/mo. mortgage payment, and lost your home, now you're renting somewhere for much cheaper and have more cash left at the end of the month. At least here in Sacramento, the malls, restaurants and casinos are more crowded now than they were 6 months ago.

In addition, there is a lot of stimulus out there. True, banks aren't lending now, but I think we need to see a round of consolidation.

Anyways, that's my take. The market is down about 50% from the highs, and if you're optimistic about the future, then when is a better time to buy? I believe this is a great opportunity for folks in their 20's and 30's to invest for the long term. It's a 50% off sale on America!

Cue Neil Diamond singing "America!"

I think we're all wishing Obama well. We're all in this together.

Posted by Muck at November 21, 2008 08:56 AM

Ahhh, the legacy of Bush. Wars of aggression and death and destruction, sure. Shred the Constitution and Civil Rights, sure. Sociopathic, sure...you need only go as far as Katrina and his studied incompetence to understand it.

His greatest gift was his trickle down tax cuts. The wealthy kept a little more in their pockets and then lost every bit of it and much much more in the financial meltdown. Giggle!

The interesting dynamic with the republi-KKKons is that the r-KKKon party was composed of the wealthy and the stupid. The wealthy are bailing in droves leaving only the...well, just look at the trolls...

We are teatering on a depression.

Nahhh. Just mid-republi-KKKon flush and circling the hole.

I've seen where the r-KKKon's think their future is in the Southern states. They're becoming a party of love, not hate.

About the only way to more completely misstate what actually happened would be to stand there and babble incoherently while drooling on yourself.

B. Obama is not the new or next Kennedy.

Posted by peter at November 21, 2008 09:34 AM

petie, Obama is looking for competent, hardworking, smart, diverse people in his cabinet. Everyone so far falls into this category.

Quit being a dickwad, he hasn't taken office yet, give him a chance.

Posted by Seven of Six at November 21, 2008 09:42 AM

Yeah Muck, demand will come roaring back now that those who have lost their homes are back into the game! They've got the dough to turn this little downturn around! Jeebus, do actually believe anything you post?

It's great that you're back in the market, but do we really have to watch your hamhanded nonsense about persuading others that things are moving the right way and so BUY BUY BUY?

It's as bad as the cretinous peter's pathetic lamebrain attempts to generate progressive "dissatisfaction" with the new admin---yeah, petr, you've really got a great handle on what motivates our thinking on things. Clueless doesn't begin yo decribe you. Why not take about a year off from your worthless "blogging" efforts, take a course, read a new Nazi history of the Russian Invasion? You've got nothing, nothing, to say. Clear out.

The only thing that will save the economy now is a massive fiscal stimulus package of $500-800 billion. Private consumption is falling off a cliff, unemployment will be exploding in the next coulpe months. Bankruptcies will be everywhere, from the largest to the smallest enterprises. Commercial real estate is just starting to tank, and it will take hundreds of regional banks with it. We're now staring deflation in the face, the Fed has shot its wad (fed funds rate is effectively zero) and is powerless, the credit markets are seizing up again, and business can't borrow or raise capital. See GM.

And muck is watching the taco stands and casinos in Sacramento and yelling "huzza!". And thinks he knows enough to yap about his "econ" blog and bloviate about his paltry "investment" life. Sheesh. Muck, you're never right, that's what's so great about you.

Posted by euzoius at November 21, 2008 09:51 AM

"Anyways, that's my take" Mucktroll, your "take" has been proven to be entirely worthless, as has the economic plans of the Bush Admin which you consistently praised over the last few years. Horrible Financial Worldwide Crisis. You didn't see any of it coming.
"Your take"? Take "your take" and shove it. You missed the most obvious financial disaster in 80 years, dumb ass.

so peter again,
how is it obama's recession?
will you disavow the talking heads who are now attempting to pin this on him? you did not answer me nor judith. the right is trying to pin this on him, will you shout that hey, he isn't in office yet on their blogs, or is it just this one?

Posted by anthony at November 21, 2008 10:14 AM

Yup I'm thinking most people are just dying to spend all that "extra" cash in their pocket from falling gas prices and losing their home at the mall especially since many have also just lost their jobs.

Amazingly that "go shopping" Dubya reflex mantra appears to be your answer to any national crisis. Well, maybe those poor folks who lost their job can borrow from what's left in their 401k's... D'oh! muck...buy buy buy...shop til you drop baby...welcome back....you do realize you still sound out of touch and ridiculous.

Posted by emal at November 21, 2008 10:24 AM

Looking forward, why isn't the 'change' Obama admin. bringing in some great progressives like;

Quit trying to redefine what change means. Obama has shown us very clearly that he is an over-achiever in pragmatism (somewhat to my chagrin). He's putting people in positions to affect change. I'd love to see more progressives in cabinet and department positions, but its not going to happen, nor did I expect it to.

This problem stems from the right trying to paint Obama as a liberal. He's not even close to a liberal. Classic right-wing tactics: paint an opponent as some extremist that they aren't and then rail on them for not living up to their mischaracterizations. (not specifically referring to you Peter, your post had some nice points)

Hey! I've been unbanned! Thanks to the unbanners!

LAWLS! That never stopped you before Muck, nice double backflip with 1/2 twist entrance though. You are in prime form, tempered with a bit of financial sobriety, but prime nontheless

At least the gap between the rich and poor had narrowed dramatically the past few months!

Yes, but nothing as changed. All the mechanisms are still in place to keep that gap obscenely large. Not to mention they are so financially insulated from the real world, they'll climb out of their hole much faster than the rest of us "little people." "Oh Woe is me, I'm no ONLY worth $20 million dollars! Whatever shall I do!"

That folks were shopping less because they were sending more money to OPEC when they fueled their gas tank.

Wow, you were doing so well too! C'mon Muck, this is silly. While fuel prices have a big impact on the economy as a whole, are you saying that an $80 - $100k per anum household of 4 spending an extra $150/month on fuel is going to kill their consumerism? Okay toss in more for general energy costs, but still energy costs weren't the real pin prick of the bubble.

This bubble wasn't based on that spending. It was the billions upon billions of dollars tossed around like candy. It was a freaking party and powered by people buying shit they didn't need couldn't afford in the first place.

Yet another example Laissez-faire economics doing its best to destroy the middle/consumerism class.

The Federal Reserve has mismanaged interest rates.

Buh...bu.... but, Greenspan was a freaking GENIUS!! Oh, wait... nevermind.

now you're renting somewhere for much cheaper and have more cash left at the end of the month.

::: pounds head on the table :::: Um, what about all those pesky credit cards that were maxed out trying to cling onto the houses. The people in that situation screwed themselves big time for a long time to come. They aren't going to suddenly fuel the economy again.

At least here in Sacramento, the malls, restaurants and casinos are more crowded now than they were 6 months ago.

It Burns!!! It Burns!! Oh, please make it stop! Think McFly, Think!

Forever the optimist, eh Muck? Its going to get uglier, much uglier. We'll claw our way out, leaving a wide swath of destruction in our path. The working poor are going to be decimated.

I believe this is a great opportunity for folks in their 20's and 30's to invest for the long term. It's a 50% off sale on America!

Done wisely, sure.. that is if you have a job.

BTW welcome back Muck!

You assclowns are playing in a rigged casino

Exactly Phid, but they don't care. The ones doing the rigging made their billions, they are laughing at the rest of us, especially the ones that kept cheering them on.

Posted by Simp at November 21, 2008 10:28 AM

And BTW, it may very well be that America is not a good "buy", even at "50% off".......it's a pretty severely damaged "product".

Nothing is a sure thing anymore. There are no obviously winning "plays"....there's no assurance that what worked in the past will work again. Once something is smashed, sometimes it can't be repaired.

Posted by euzoius at November 21, 2008 11:09 AM

Bush was enabled not only by American journalism but the Democratic Party, in other words. The precise same enabling represented by the rankly odious Joe Lieberman and his continued acceptance.

While I do not disagree, completely, I think that a lot of the blame rests on the American people.

I mean, holy fuck, what was the voting percentage?

The most important Presidential election ever and still, a massive amount of eligible voters, did not even bother to vote. Are you kidding me.

I believe that if everyone voted who were eligible to vote then the GOP would be gone forever.

I also think that the Right is more organized in their phone trees and email lists and messaging and marketing.

Take, for example, the whole offshore drilling fiasco. I do not know how many of us progressives got on the phone and called the Congress and emailed and faxed and wrote letters, etc...but I do know that the Right Wing mobilized their masses and those people did that which is why the Congress capitulated.

Believe it or not, these assholes - especially the House members who are up for election every two years - really do listen to us.

If we do not raise hell, they will not do our bidding. It is as simple as that. The Right Wing as a whole lot of blow hards and they are loud. We need to scream louder. Period.

We need to use our forums that we have in place - blogs and the small bit of Progressive radio and Rachel and Keith - we need to use these forums to educate the people and to get the people to be active. When the people are active the changes will occur.

No matter how Progressive Obama may or may not be - he needs a movement. He absolutely needs us to raise hell, contact Congress, write letters to editors, march, go to meet-ups, join our local Democratic Party, have house parties, etc, etc. The campaign is not over; it has only just now started. We have to act as if we are still trying to win the election because what we are fighting for now is the actual change that can be implemented as a result of winning the elections.

People - this is not really up to Obama or the Congress...It is Up to US, you and me, all of us collectively.

"If you wanna end war and stuff, ya gotta sing louder." - Arlo Guthrie

stupidipides! Long time no see, my friend! How the heck have you been? I thought you'd be more optimistic with Change coming, like Daschle, Rahm, and Hillary. Lots of new faces there. Nothing says "get 'er done" like Tom Daschle.

Peter, I agree with Seven. We have to give Obama a chance here. And lets hope he does a great job. The election is over, and it's time to group up and work together.

Euz: The only thing that will save the economy now is a massive fiscal stimulus package of $500-800 billion

Hey Euz, check out gasoline prices! There's a $300 billion stimulus package right there! Sending less money to OPEC and Venezuela makes my day, Clint!

You're right, T2, I did miss it. As did many others. Like... Warren Buffett! His Berkshire is down quite a bit, but then again he has expressed a personal interest in narrowing the gap between the rich and the poor.

Hey Emal, I've been out shopping and waiting in these long lines. Lots of folks out there. I bought an iPhone. What a zoo that Apple store is. Reminds me of those model home offices about 5 years ago, with everyone waiting around for help. Great technology. I recommend one for all of you. A few days ago on my blog is an entry called "Apptacular" with a link to 100 highly-rated apps. I listed a few that I've been using, too. Or search the Google for apptacular if you don't want to give me the link love. LOL.

Simp, thanks for the welcome back. Makes me feel warm and fuzzy. Well, that could be the eggnog.

Hey, the SP500 is up .76 points as I type! It's a rally!

"You're right, T2, I did miss it" Sure you did. But I didn't - you can't loan money to people that clearly can't afford a $400k house and a $50k monster gas guzzler truck burning $5 a gallon gas and expect everything to come out rosy at the same time you are blowing up $4 Billion a week on a phony war in Iraq AND giving tax breaks to the wealthy 3% of the country. And just because the gas price has gone down only proves it was a Total Rip-Off for the EXxons from the start. Remember, they told us it was lack of refining capacity driving the cost up....well, guess not. It was just rich people getting richer until the well dried up.
And "as did many others" yes to that also. Unfortunately those "many others" were the people you Republicans and George Bush installed to keep financial disasters from happening. Idiots all.

So now Barack Obama is going to appoint Hillary Clinton to be the chief architect of his foreign policy. Yet his signature issue in the primaries was his "good judgment" to oppose the Iraq war. He invoked this more than any other qualification in his early battles with Hillary Clinton. She may have experience, he'd charge, but she lacked the wisdom to oppose the war. Oh well...
