Happy holidays to you paradox. You are correct that we Americans work too hard, spend little time with families and when we are old, we are not so sure of our safety net. Our seniors are really struggling.
On the other hand our European cousines do not work as long hours as we do but enjoy life with their families every day. When you visit Europe, you notice people sitting in the side walk cafes at late hours during a week day and you wonder if these people are working next day, and when they get old, they are treated much better with all kinds of facilities and programs. They never have to choose between medication and food as lot of our seniors have to do.
I guess there price to pay for everything we do. For the standard of living we Americans have achieved, we are paying rather a terrible price in terms of our work ethics and lack of social responsibility towards our fellow citizens. We may have more material wealth then Europeans but I think they are happier than us when it comes to living on a day to day basis.
Posted by suresh at December 24, 2008 07:54 AMAnd a peaceful solstice to all! I know I bust your butt a lot of the time, paradox, but I kid because I love. Take care of yourself, and enjoy the things that make you happy for just a little while. The mess will still be here on Monday!
Happy Christmas Eve to all, hope your holiday's a good one.
Posted by iamcoyote at December 24, 2008 08:22 AMEven non-godbots have fun today! We put up lights on the house weeks ago to prevent a Christain egging, and have the cutest little Steiff coyote in the manger!
TIKI - funny! I'm the baby Jesus! Of course, you may get egged anyways, what with the sacrilege and all.

Posted by Seven of Six at December 24, 2008 01:57 PMActually the little Catholic girls liked the Steiff coyote in the manger, and their parents didn't seem to notice that the life size cut outs of the 3 wisemen were actually Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, and Richard Dawkins.
Peace on Earth.
Posted by TIKI AL at December 24, 2008 02:32 PMHitchens?! Ah what the hey, I'll down a gallon of single malt with him and enjoy his rational bits.
Happy everything to all!
Posted by Sharkbabe at December 24, 2008 06:32 PMYea, Sharkbabe, I'm conflicted on Hitchens with his war views, but he sure gives the godbots hell.
