For the record, that would make Clarke the very first member of the Bush Administration to offer an apology of any kind. The guy, based on his history, may be a hard-core conservative, but at least he had the decency and humility to come out, in front of the cameras no less (!!), and apologize. Hopefully, his action will be the start of rolling the Ball of Apology to where it affects as many different public officials on a variety of issues.
Until then, Show me the tapes!!

Posted by Tony at March 24, 2004 12:54 PMWow! Unfortunately I was not able to see this for myself. It appears to me after reading this, that the only adult that was in charge and who actually knows and understands what the word responsibility means, is no longer working in government. It is well past time for others in this Administration to own up to their mistakes and to do the same. However, using some words similar to ones Mr. Clarke used the other night, that will happen when hell freezes over. Mr. Clarke is true patriot. He is a man with a conscience, a sense of morality, and a man of immense character... how refreshing.

Posted by Bragan at March 24, 2004 01:32 PMWhat do you suppose Bush will do now? I'm sure that the Bushies will keep attacking the character of anyone who opposes them, but this is becoming more difficult. Mr. Clarke can't help but win admiration for his candor. It can only hurt Bush to continue to malign his character. I'm actually quite frightened of what he may do next. You know what they say about cornered animals...
Posted by Jo at March 24, 2004 01:54 PMWhat a masterstroke by Clarke.....whether it was heartfelt or a cunning political ploy, his apology just blew the wheels right off the BushCo "discredit Clarke" wagon. Count on that quote to lead off every nightly news show, although Fox will probably voice over "Former Clinton aide takes blame for 9/11".
Posted by T2 at March 24, 2004 02:15 PMExactly, T2. On the radio, I heard people talking about the possibility of Clarke putting on a show to sell his book. The prevailing view was that if he is putting on a show, he is doing so really well.
Posted by CA Pol Junkie at March 24, 2004 02:35 PMWhat a classy guy Clarke is - not only that, he is the best witness I have ever seen - cool, articulate, thoroughly knowledgable, terrific memory, great timing (e.g., he would wait for the question (even if the question was adversarial), pause, smile a bit, and then come out with solid answers - never smirking, nor defensive - just a dream witness - I'm in love.
Posted by Dorothy M. Ligon at March 24, 2004 02:42 PMI saw part of his testimony and thought he was very impressive. It will be interesting to see what our not so brave media does with it.
Posted by JWC at March 24, 2004 02:50 PMNew Republican Spin:
Dick Clarke said ".....I failed you,"
Posted by kdub at March 24, 2004 03:34 PMI can't recall EVER seeing a bureaucrat who was willing to let himself be associated with a massive failure, much less say "I failed you.
They can't touch him now.
Posted by Matt Davis at March 24, 2004 06:13 PMRight after the Clark hearings, I surfed over to CNN to get their take. I was outraged to see the lead headline. It said" Official challenges Clarks credibility. I don't have to even 'splain" to you good people how pissed I was.
So I wrote em an E-mail and explained how I felt.
Then I surfed to Kos and found out others were sending mail. And what do you know? About 20 minutes latter, CNN changed that headline to something a little more representitve of what we all SAW tonite.
Moral is.....The worm is turning.
