Well, it's obvious that if you can afford $20 a month for a cell phone you can surely afford $800 a month in rent. Duh!
Posted by snark at March 6, 2009 06:47 PMThe world has been impressed by the number of satellite dishes in our hobo jungles for years.
Posted by TIKI AL at March 6, 2009 07:06 PMThe very fact that these so called "real Americans" display their ignorance concerning the existence of
pre-paid phones shows just how far out of touch the PJ brigades really are.
What did we learn from this hit-piece on a homeless guy with a cell?
First, that major American newspapers and rich journalists are in shock at the idea of a homeless person having anything to do with the 21st century. The last time the media noticed the poor and homeless, except as scary things to avoid and not think about, was the movie The Grapes of Wrath (1940) apparently.
Second, the news media and well-paid reporters are so out of touch that they have no idea how the poor has to scrape by to live in America today or what the priorities of day-to-day life become. What, you could suddenly lose your job and/or house and find yourself in line in a soup kitchen? Who knew!
Finally, we also learned what 'reporter' Andrew Malcolm will look like in a few months when the LA Times goes bust like the rest of the newspaper biz, he loses his home and his stocks are wothless --and he finally sees what life is like on the other side of the perfect 'American Dream.'
Andrew, I know this might freak you out, but you can have a blog about your new adventure and update it on your cell! Or from something called a public library! In the meantime, here is your follow-up story: 'Shocking news: homeless people have blogs!'
Posted by Tom The Patriot at March 6, 2009 08:04 PMGee, I recall Newt Gingrich saying he thought poor people should have laptops as a way of puuling themselves up by their bootstraps.
Posted by Danton at March 6, 2009 08:10 PMNice to see you again snark.
Great picture, nice to see the First Lady lending a hand. I wouldn't read much else into this, the phone might not even be active...just something for emergencies, no fees required. One can call 911 without having a service provider.
I'm staring to see bumper stickers out there reading they miss Bill Clinton and believe it or not W too!
Even Whoopie doesn't like paying more in taxes!
Where is John Galt?
Posted by peter at March 6, 2009 08:27 PMK-Lo is a fat, ugly ho.
Yo.
Posted by The Creator at March 6, 2009 08:45 PM"Where is John Galt?"
On vacation with Santa Claus, the Easter bunny and several other mythical creatures.
Posted by herbal tee at March 6, 2009 09:42 PMYeah, you tell'em, you right-wingers.
Why don't those homeless people get a job?
Oh, that's right, you probably need to be available by phone to get a job.
The right wing hasn't been in touch with America since Ronald Bonzo said that there were a lot of people just enjoying camping out. Like the homelessness he helped foist on people was just ducky.
Wingers sure can act like ass-hats sometimes.
Posted by kleven-stein at March 6, 2009 09:46 PMJust saw a commercial about a gov't program that allows people eligible for food stamps to qualify for some free cell phone and some minutes. I think it was called like safelink wireless and is offered by tracfone.
Now of course this will piss off the wingnuts even more and give them a whole new angle to screech and whine about because well teh poor people need to look and act their rightful place in society and we can't be helping them with cellphones for keeping in touch with the rest of the world ....but all I can say is that after working at a food pantry every month for the past year and a half and witnessing the people that show up there, one realizes most are just regular amurkans (even many working and not all homeless) who are really struggling to keep pace in these economic times. These wingnuts are so out of touch with the finanical situation that many americans find themselves in these days and so unaware of just how large of a segment of the population has fallen behind over the past decade....they're clueless.
Maybe if the party of Rushbots actually got out of their bubble and attended or gawd forbid volunteered regularly with these individuals and learned their stories they would just stfu....but I know that's just a pipe dream.
Posted by emal at March 7, 2009 05:46 AMThe right wing thinks that the poor must be totally bereft of any means before they "deserve" the charity their shrivelled little hearts will provide. I keep flashing back to the scene in Oliver where the Limbaugh-like monster in the food kitchen roars out MORE?"
Posted by at March 7, 2009 06:57 AMI suppose many haven't noticed, but phone booths are more or less extinct. So if you don't have a residence with a phone, pretty much the only way you can ever use one is if you have a cell.
