Comments: As Billed

Well, it could have been worse.

If the Times had asked me, I would have suggested Jay Cost as their token Republican.

Did you actually read the entire thing Turkana? what he's saying is that if the total wingnut, Cheney, had been the candidate he would have been beaten worse than McCain and the lunatic fringe he represents would have been discredited. The result might have been that the Republican party might have had a chance to reinvent itself. Makes sense to me.

ron,

did you miss the part about debating torture, but not for the purpose of actually holding people accountable for it. so, to what purpose?

Douhat has done some bloggingheads.tv diavlogs that are quite interesting. What he's saying in this article is that he wished that Cheney had run, and been butchered a la Barry Goldwater in '64, and then the Limbaugh/Hannity crowd would have had to face up to the fact that a more intelligent and moderate approach will be necessary to have a prayer of getting elected. As it is now, they just blame it on McCain not being a real conservative.

Douhat is bright - his only really serious blind spot is abortion. The only hope for the GOP is for it to be taken over by people like Douhat and his co-author Raheem Sa-something - also on blogging heads and even more intelligent and reasonable that Douhat.
