Comments: As California Goes…

"they don’t believe in reality or government" - don't you mean "they really don't believe in government"?
The cornerstone of the conservatives is "small govt" get the "govt out of our lives". Until they need earthquake disaster help, or highways fixed, etc.etc.etc.

California is a liberal state. It has gone down in flames because the Progressive party has failed. Too much government spending and taxes are too high.

First the Soviet Union fails, now California. Big government is a failure.

Tuesday is a chance for Californians to join the Teaparty and tell the progressives to stop ruining the country.

You folks are caught between the super-majority issue and the irresponsible populism of the initiative process. I see no solution for CA except to amend constitution to do away with the super majority.

We have difficult times ahead. The national economy has essentially been replaced by a speculative, bubble economy based on three card monte ethics. The natural environment is making it increasingly clear that Mother Nature doesn't do bailouts. There is a way through this and it is to engage a large part of the economy and labor system in a transition to sustainable economies, real production of sustainable, cradle to cradle goods. It won't "produce" the obscene level of profit that the uber-meisters have grown accustomed to, but the uber-meisters need to be neutered by a steeply progressive tax schedule with a top rate of 75% or above like we had back in the Eisenhower era.

Good luck in CA. I am worrying here in the Evergreen State.

Just like a Republican to suggest teabagging instead of getting down to work, huh? Fookin' perverts.

I voted against all six propositions. I favor a Constitutional Convention to start all over, scrapping all ballot initiatives, putting in a unicameral legislature with longer terms (we don't have a house of lords; the idea that the Senate would carefully study bills passed by the Assembly is a pathetic joke) and putting in much higher alcohol taxes. I suspect that the voters will opt for the worst course- reject the stupid ballot initiatives, assume that a new governor can solve the problem and opt for more ballot initiatives in the fall.

Mommy, look! It's a UniCon! Is it true they've all said the same thing for 30 years? Wowsers!

I strongly oppose Prop 1A because I think that increasing inflexibility in the budget process is counterproductive. But, I would maybe - maybe - be willing to vote for the ballot measures if they solved the problem. But they won't - the ballot measures will only deal with about $5 billion of the deficit, leaving $15 billion to be cut on May 20th, regardless. Mortgaging the future to deal with 1/4th of the problem isn't something I'm willing to support.

I've consistently voiced vote "No" on Props 1A,1C,1D,1E and "Yes" on Prop 1B. No change today, get these people to do a proper job. They can Doxie, and the problem isn't with the minority. Had Democrats acted like Democrats say in West Virginia, you'd have a surplus with money to spare for those fires, earthquakes, and highway repairs. West Virginia Democrats seem to be more realistic with the public's bounty. Much of California's problems comes from a lack of competition. Everyone's in a safe district, no need to participate, but that's what you want. Isn't it Doxie, Democrats uber alles?

Posted by headxray at May 18, 2009 07:08 PM

pay up.

I'll bet I'm right on how California votes Tuesday. Me, some little Republican, knows how the Democrats in California are going to vote. Democrats broke it, they own it. Everything Democrats wanted in the state they get, only how to keep paying for it. Democrats in West Virginia own their surplus. They have money for rainy days.

So, peter wants to be paid in advance for a bet he makes with himself? Well, okey dokey! peter, you owe me a million bucks for a bet I made just now, and according to your rules, I don't have to say what the bet was, 'cept that I won.

Pay up, dude.

Posted by Twinky P* at May 19, 2009 07:21 AM

Actually Twink...the bet was made by the dude who's head X-Ray revealed he has no brain:

"typical shit-fer-brains pete: Democrats uber alles?

pete I'll wager a $100 you don't know what those words mean...

shit-fer-brains pete setting new standards in right wing stupidity..."

Peter just responded that the brainles one should "pay up" then proposed a new wager.

You should really try to keep up with the posts.

I seem to recall (no pun intended) that in 2003 the people of California threw out their elected governor when he tried to fix the budget mess. One of the big complaints was that Gov Davis decided to return the DMV fee for cars back to level it had been prior to the surplus years of the late 1990s.

That is, facing a major budget crisis brought about by the plummetting tax revenues in the early 2000s recession, Davis did the right thing and got the boot. Schwartzengroper promised to keep the car taxes down.

You can make the case that 2003 was an early example of "tea party" activism. Certainly the petition to remove Davis came from the hard right. Certainly many of the state's media giants were pushing hard to remove Davis -- they'd been trying to smear him in the run up to the 2002 election until his Republican opponent got caught in a major scandal.

So today California has the highest state taxes in the nation, horrible roads, woefully underfunded schools (ranked down at the bottom with TX, LA, MI, and AL), and inadequate services.

And while the wingnuts want to blame the Democrats because CA has been a reliable Democratic state in recent presidential elections, the truth is that Republicans have owned the governorship for all but 5 of the last 27 years. They've done to California what they did to the country.
