The following is a true account of the events that took place 26 May 2009:
4:02 PM Mailman handed me Obama stimulas check.
4:09 PM Cashed stimulas check at Wells Fargo.
4:19 PM Purchased 19" Sharp LCD at Ultimate Electronics for pool cabana.
5:02 PM Monitored O'Reilly going off the deep end from the deep end of the pool.
Thank you President Obama.
Hang on! You got a check?
Posted by Twinky P* at June 1, 2009 09:02 AMYep. May 26th. Spent the whole thing. I feel I did my part. I tried to buy an American TV, but couldn't find a 1966 Sylvania on Craigs List.
Posted by TIKI AL at June 1, 2009 10:15 AMI'm reading about all the fallout from the murder in Wichita, and it occurs to me that this is the first such murder to take place in the 2000s ... that is, the first such murder since the rise of the internet left.
If there is a silver lining to this perhaps the center-left will start addressing the abortion rights issue head on, rather than avoiding it.
Many, perhaps most, of the "pro-lifers" mean well. They really imagine that it's fully-term, cute and cuddly babies that are being killed, not microscopic zygotes. They really imagine that it's millions of late-term abortions each year, not dozens. They really imagine that the late-term abortions are decided on due to inconvenience, not out of extreme grief due to circumstances no one would wish on their worst enemy.
Yes, I understand that a lot of "pro-lifers" are actually anti-sex -- that they oppose federal funding of abortion because they really want to "punish promiscuous poor people" -- and that if they really cared about the fetus they'd also strongly advocate universal health care for women and their children, and national insurance that would allow mothers (or fathers) to stay home with children in the first years of their lives.
I understand that most Republicans are "pro-life, pro-death penalty, pro-war, pro-torture", and that they see no contradiction in these positions. I understand that they are "pro-life*" with a big asterisk (*excepting fetuses in countries we are bombing, poor fetuses without health insurance, liberal fetuses, non-white fetuses, and fetuses that have made the mistake of actually being born).
But there are enough people who are "pro-life" or who lean "pro-life" that have been fooled by the "pro-life" rhetoric into believing the nonsense listed in my 3rd paragraph above. And it's THOSE people who need to be targeted in a visable pro-abortion rights campaign by the center-left.
Posted by Anonny at June 1, 2009 10:56 AMExcellent post from Dailykos.
Dr. Tiller should have taken the hint when he was bombed and shot the previous times and changed his ways. The fact that he persisted and was ultimately attacked again is his own fault.
That's about as straight forward an endorsement of terrorism and giving in to terrorism as I've ever seen.

Christian and Muslim fundamentalists agree on pretty much everything except which imaginary God to worship and the preferred color of skin.
Posted by Anonny at June 1, 2009 12:00 PMTIKI, the Stimulus this time was a tax cut. Not a check like last time. Are you in a time warp?
Posted by T2 at June 1, 2009 12:36 PMAnonny, the latest wingnut talking point on reasons for abortion (including late term) is that there is never any medical necessity, the selfish mother was simply "depressed" and that's all the irresponsible doctor-murderer needed to hear to begin torturing the healthy, innocent, about-to-be-born fetus to death. (Here the wingnut prostrates him or herself and begins convulsing about "saving the lambs.")
The reason that no one knows any facts about the abortion situation in America is that our elected Dems are (mostly) afraid to stand up and defend the doctors and health care providers who perform abortions and explain what the actual lay of the land is. So the wingnut lies and misinformation goes utterly unchallenged---certainly by their Noise Machine--but also by the corporate press.
We are held hostage by the worthless corporate media and weak Dems, while the Rightwing Noise Machine spews lie after lie, which many "independents" ingest and believe.
The latest murder/assassination won't change that, nor will we start to get serious about protecting the nation's doctors who ensure reproductive rights. The gub'mint has left them to battle the "religious" wingnuts on their own.
Posted by euzoius at June 1, 2009 01:02 PMThe next thing out sourced will be abortion because our doctors will be afraid to perform it. However, the HMOs will refuse to pay for it because it is performed outside the country. So ultimately we will have "back alley" abortions and unnecessary deaths of women.
When are we going to learn from the rest of the world?
Posted by suresh at June 1, 2009 02:56 PMThat's not what I hear Euz, but it would be a surprise to be hearing the same thing as you anyhow.

He's with y'all now...
"Said Cheney: "I think that freedom means freedom for everyone. As many of you know, one of my daughters is gay, and it is something we have lived with for a long time in our family. I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish. Any kind of arrangement they wish. The question of whether or not there ought to be a federal statute to protect this, I don't support. I do believe that... historically the way marriage has been regulated is at the state level. It has always been a state issue and I think that is the way it ought to be handled, on a state-by-state basis... But I don't have any problem with that. People ought to get a shot at that." h/t politicalwire.com
I just wonder how many of you agree with him now? Is hell freezing over?
Posted by peter at June 1, 2009 03:48 PMpeter: cheney's pro-gay marriage statement reminds me of the extremely rich, extremely reich-wing parents of a college classmate of mine.
He was the epitome of preppiness, a prototypical Reagan supporter of the early 1980s, and flamboyantly gay. After years of tension he finally came out to his parents. They initially responded with the silent treatment, but ultimately decided to accept him.
They told him that when he found the right guy they would pay for the kind of wedding reception that they'd bought for his sister, and that they'd set them up in an equally nice house.
However, they warned him, if he ever told them he was a Democrat they would cut him off and never speak to him again.
True story. He and his partner went on to become very very wealthy stockbrokers, and active Log Cabin Republicans.
So, no, this doesn't surprise me about Cheney. In fact, it's pretty obviously a quid-pro-quo with his daughter -- you go on TV and defend my war crimes and I'll go on TV and say I think it should be legal for you and your partner to get married.
The anti-gay hostility does not come from the Republican party bosses. Hell, by some estimates nearly half of the Republican males in Washington are gay. No, it's part of the hatred-feeding that the Republicans do to get the votes.

I guess since Deadeye's Daughter is heroically defending her dear old Dad for his torture policies, the least he can do is cut her some slack on gay marriage.
Anyway, too little, too late. A convenient (and cowardly) "epiphany" uttered after years of absolute power, when he happily used the issue to get himself re-elected by his hate-filled minions after lying the nation into an oil war.
It makes Deadeye appear even more manipulative, craven and calculating, IMO. Loathsome "conservatives" and their monstrous "leaders"....
Posted by euzoius at June 1, 2009 05:40 PMDoh! Anonny beat me to the punch(es)!!
Damn....
Posted by euzoius at June 1, 2009 05:43 PMPresident Obama makes a decree that marks LGBT month pushing for everything short of marriage equality. Former VP Cheney goes him one further and pushes all in on marriage.
What a world we live in, my it's getting cold in NY.
Posted by peter at June 1, 2009 06:16 PMOh no, The Confluence, is coming for us!
Attention commentors PUMA's are on the march. They will try and take over TLC. The air is thick with fear!
Posted by Seven of Six at June 1, 2009 09:45 PMT2: I received a letter saying I would be getting a check due to the economic recovery act, and 2 weeks later it came. Time warp? I don't think so. Remember, I am retired.
oozo: Cheney has 2 daughters. Did you morph them into one? The big mouth winger is strait.
Posted by TIKI AL at June 2, 2009 01:03 AM"Two daughters"
Whoops, I didn't know that!
So maybe big mouth torture-daughter wheedled the promise out of Dead Eye Dick for her sister's benefit....
