A horrible personal loss for his friends and family and a terrible loss for the country and planet as well.
My condolences, turk.

I'm so sorry about your loss, and the loss of such a good spirit. The world needs more people like your friend.
Posted by otherlisa at June 8, 2009 01:38 PMI too am sorry for your loss and the loss to all of us.
Oddly, I lost a lawyer friend of mine ll years ago tomorrow in a car accident. Laurel Rubin, like Luke, was an outstanding student, Cornell, then JD from Berkeley. Could've gone anywhere, but chose to work for underserved populations for Evergreen Legal Services in Eastern WA.
One day she called and asked me how she could get people to stop eating meat. She was a vegetarian - but was representing meat packers who'd been fired for trying to start a union. Their work repulsed her, but their right to work and to be safe and paid well, was imperative.
She didn't just work for her clients, she befriended them, ate with them, sang with them, knew their children and families.
And, in the short time she was in our rural community she joined our symphony, taught Hebrew school, sang in a chorale, and made time to teach her friends about Judaism. More than tolerance (tolerating) people, Laurel embraced them.
Her memorial service was bi-lingual, and the Synagogue was packed to the gills.
I hope if there's an afterlife that Lauren & Luke find ways to champion the underdog from heaven too.
Take care.
