As a gay former Catholic, the Maine vote leaves a special bad taste in my mouth. I spent the last year at Catholic weddings of many of my family's children. My mother is near death, and I expect to go to her Catholic funeral. After that, I won't ever step foot in a church again. The bigotry of the organization is revolting.
At the last wedding I went to, a former priest of mine had the gall to tell me that gays only want the Church to change its stance on homosexuality because we want their "approval." I was trying to be polite, so I didn't tell the man to go to hell. I don't give a damn about their approval or the approval of the damned Maine Catholics that voted for this latest proposition (abomination). What I care about is having the legal benefits in my relationship that all the self satisfied heteros have in their relationships. And here is my middle finger to all the Maine Democrats who keep their heads up their butts while voting against civil rights for gays.
Posted by candideinnc at November 4, 2009 05:19 AMin races that don't matter to me....a very unpopular NJ governor was defeated by a a less unpopular guy. A GOPer won governor in the South and a Democrat won a house seat in a district that has been GOP forever...... the Owens win is a direct rebuke to Conservative GOP politics, to Palin, and all the other Tea Baggers. But the Corporate Media glossed over that pretty well. The first two show Obama is weak. The last shows.....well, lets concentrate on the first two.
Posted by T2 at November 4, 2009 07:04 AMNew Jersey voters: WHAT HATH YOU WROUGHT?
Local radio news reports this morning that a strange, stain seems to be spreading across the State House lawn, from west to east. Botanists at the New Jersey Department of Agriculture have identified it as the "Black Greedywort Rust", a redolent member of the venalis corriuptus family of fungi which was once prevalent in the region. Naturalists (and politicians) are surprised by the early onset of the disease. It was only recently thought to thrive largely in the deepest, dankest regions of the South, Gulf Coast and in portions of Alaska.
Those responsible for the safety of New Jersey's ecosystems are extremely worried about the infestation. Additionally, a very odd and ugly froglike creature has been reported by (no longer) sober individuals as appearing briefly on the State House grounds: seeming to appear out of holes no one had ever noticed before, quickly flick out it's obscenely long, dripping and vile smelling tongue to snatch a quick meal of crow or squirrel and, just as quickly, disappear again. Alarmed reports of a missing senior Democratic Aide to Joseph Roberts, the Speaker of the House, are thought to be unrelated.
A visibly furious Trenton Police spokesperson, asking not to be identified because, "Nobody else ever has to!", has vowed to find and punish the supposed wag who put up a ramshackle billboard overnight on the wall outside of the Governor's mansion. The sign read, in mysterious red ink which is being thoroughly analyzed,
"Welcome to the future home of Christie the Hutt! Coming soon to a nightmare near you!"
To date, 135 individuals and progressive organizations have claimed responsibility for the sign. The Governor-elect has vowed to investigate whether ACORN had anything to do with the sign, or anything else in New Jersey for the past 20 years. He claims to have consulted with his crack(ed) investigation team from his former US Attorney's office. They are reported ready to invade the Justice Department and "turn everyone upside down" from day one of the Christie administration. Michelle Brown has graciously accepted the position of Chief of Staff and Constant Traveling Companion for Governor Hutt.
I have to tell you, I'm depressed! Once again, the Democratic administration, coming on the heels of yet another Republican meltdown, makes hard choices, fights recalcitrant and boneheadedly dishonest and disruptive tactics by Republican "grown-ups" and, after FINALLY clawing the way back to at least seeing the light of fiscal security, without crushing the lower and middle income citizens; who comes along but the latest Republican colostomy bag, waving a magic wand and promising to lower taxes, improve education, fight corruption, restore civility to hockey games and, of course, work to restore world peace.
Like Lucy holding out an irresistible football, New Jersey Charlie Browns fall for the scam all the time! In this case, however, the mental vision of Chris Christie in a tutu and magic faerie suit, blowing smoke out his "magic wand" is severely disturbing. It's not something you would want your child to see! Yuchh!

You wouldn't recognize handwringing if it smacked you upside the head.

Sure he would, he calls her mommy and that's why he's so brain damaged, eh?
Posted by Twinky P* at November 4, 2009 09:34 AMI don't understand why the state, in any capacity, is involved in the marriage business. To my understanding, marriage is historically a religious institution.
The State should not venture into religious waters by even dealing with the idea of marriage. The State's duty is to ensure that legally binding partnership contracts are entered into by consenting adults wishing to enjoy the legal and tax advantages there of.
If someone chooses to marry...then they are free to find a church to sanction that partnership. Separation of Church and State demands this type of approach to the issue of equal partnership rights.
But there is just too much bigotry to be capitalized on for a rational resolution of this issue to be seriously considered.
