Would it just be preaching to the choir to mention AIDS in a DNC Convention speech? Or is health terror, be it in Africa or at home, not on the radar screen?
Posted by Kenn Chaplin at July 27, 2004 08:52 PMIt's the best speech I've ever heard. I got chills, I was in tears, I was pumping my fist in the air. Now that's what Democrats are about, that's the soul of the party . . . finally.
I think our party now has the magic on its side, and this is a totally new experience for me--energized, united, standing for something hopeful and inspired and positive. All my life the Dems have just been the only real option against the fearsome Republicans--a self-defensive move--or, at best, the party of my father, my ancestors, the party to which I'm loyal--no matter what. But this, tonight--it was great.
I remember back in 1980--the 49ers were 3 in 2 after 5 games. The season before they had won 6 games total and that was the best season they'd had in years. Anyway, after 5 games, they were 3 in 2--and we 49er fans were all very pleased that they were doing so well, that maybe this season they would do better than 50%. A guy with whom I worked--a teamster type--predicted with absolute certainty that they were going to win the Super Bowl that year (they did, of course--their first). Not even my dad, superfan, believed that was possible. He told me, "Raenellle, this isn't their year." But this guy had no doubts. I asked him on what he was basing his belief, and he said "they have the magic."
I think the Dems have it this year.
Posted by Raenelle at July 27, 2004 09:36 PMObama was indeed great.
I'm hoping the nominees are able to build on the momentum.
If Edwards brings his "A" game tomorrow night the ticket will be in great shape.
Posted by Scott at July 27, 2004 10:08 PMWell, I hope the convention website has the A/V file (quicktime or windows-media) up sometime tomorrow.
It was nice to see the speeches from yesterday!

Posted by Darryl Pearce at July 27, 2004 10:10 PMObama re-framed the debate. He offered an inclusive America, where people care about one another. "If a child is in pain, that hurts me, even if it's not my child. If a senior can't pay for their drugs, that hurts me, even if it's not my grandparent."
He was smart, thoughtful, insightful, and -- best of all -- offered a positive view of the future. Hope for the Demos and for us all.
Posted by MS at July 27, 2004 10:26 PMOf COURSE the networks didn't carry it - they're freezing the whole convention out.
I sure hope someone keeps track of the coverage of this versus the republican convention...

Posted by Dick Cheney at July 28, 2004 04:25 AMThe image I'll take from this convention is that of a hall filled with people from all races, all walks of life, all orientations coming to one location, as delagates representing their friends and neighbors, to support the ouster of the right-wing Bush Admin. Wait a month, view the same scene at the GOP hatefest and you'll see a hall full of grim-faced white people intent on keeping the country away from the way of life Mr. Obama so artfully presented.

Why is it that this white man couldn't resist making a sports analogy when describing the intellectual accomplishments of a black man?
Posted by just asking that's all at July 28, 2004 07:02 AMI'm sure the RNC has an entire team of researchers looking for dirt on Obama. Private detectives are scouring every record to be found for smear material. We're all fallible, and the most innocuous misstep can be painted into a hell-damning moral or criminal transgression. Give it a few weeks, but soon enough Coulter & Crew will grace the major news outlets with assorted lurid tales.
Posted by STEVE DUNCAN at July 28, 2004 07:22 AMObama's keynote speech couldn't have been better - and his delivery was terrific - if you didn't feel tingly, you have already died.
Posted by Dorothy M. Ligon at July 28, 2004 07:34 AMHere is where you can see Obama's speech. Do see it if you haven't. This guy needs to be on the ticket in 2012.

In his primary campaign here in IL Obama already copped to having used cocaine in the past. I was lurking in Freeperville recently (followed by a cold shower and a rough scrub down) and saw references to "admitted cocaine abuser Barack Obama." But Obama seems to play in Peoria so...
Brilliant speech last night.
Old Senate race story from CBS: Obama "dabbled" in cocaine.
Posted by Dan at July 28, 2004 09:36 AMto bad Bush won't admit it.
Posted by Goose1 at July 28, 2004 09:55 AMHow long will CNN tolerate Tucker Carlson lying to the American people (http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/special/president/convention/dnc/press.pundits/archive/index.072804.html):
He came out for tax cuts for corporations; that's kind of interesting. He didn't say anything about Iraq; that's interesting too. He didn't say anything about the Patriot Act. He didn't say anything about desecrating the environment. He said not a word about Halliburton. In other words, his speech sounded nothing like the typical Democratic speech this year. I thought it was good.
For those who didn't catch his speech (unfortunately, they bumped the keynote speech from network TV in favor of Ron Reagan Jr. talking about stem cell research), here's the link: http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/07/27/dems.obama.transcript/index.html
1) Kerry is for corporate tax cuts too. That was straight from the Kerry platform.
2) Obama did say things about Iraq. Bush did not follow any provision of this recommendation when going into Iraq:
When we send our young men and women into harm's way, we have a solemn obligation not to fudge the numbers or shade the truth about why they're going, to care for their families while they're gone, to tend to the soldiers upon their return, and to never ever go to war without enough troops to win the war, secure the peace, and earn the respect of the world.
3) Obama did say something about the Patriot Act. When Obama mentioned the agents poking around in libraries, that was a direct reference to Section 215 of the USA PATRIOT Act:
The pundits, the pundits like to slice and dice our country into red states and blue states; red states for Republicans, blue states for Democrats. But I've got news for them, too. We worship an awesome God in the blue states, and we don't like federal agents poking around our libraries in the red states.
I would imagine Carlson was trying to mislead people on #1 and #2. For claim #2, it sounds like he's just trying to be partisan in saying that Bush didn't leave our soldiers in the lurch. For #3, he just needs to do his research.

Huh? A platitudinous soporific from Obama and the emergence of a different style of corporate shill as if Bill Clinton wasn't.
What this mind numbing bromide really means is that once the Dems trounce Bush electorally we will all just kiss and make up.This, of course, will not be as noxious as a Bush fascist victory- but sickening none the less.
Put a prettier face on it.Clinton as the killer with charm and Bush as idiot redneck killer still killers one and all...
Condolences to Bush...You get the picture. Let Bygones be by gones. You have to kick mega corporate ass to bring in something like National Health Care which would be tantamount to expropriating all the pro gay rights investment class mutuak fund gorged limousine liberals. That's not gonna happen.
Speaking for myself I am in NO WAY one with Bush and the Republicans.I mean SERIOUSLY NO WAY. These people are as malefic murderous aliens and silly paeans for reconciliation and unity verges on criminal obscenity.
When these obsequious Dems start demanding that Bush and his ilk spend some serious time in jail for crimes against America and humanity itself then and only then will Barack's absurd genuflections resonate with any sincerity.
Ralph Nader truly a piece of shit.
Yes: Impeach, Arrest, and Imprison. Unity? We are one people?
Bullshit.

Despite my rant dissing Obama overall I felt it was an effective speech.
Maybe this guy may have it in him to break the mold. Dean tried and became a victim of inter party fratricide.
Dennis Kucinich had the only platform worth a damn and it rendered him irrelevant.
I still haven't heard one innovative policy decision out of this convention. Anything visionary? Snowball's chance in Hell.
It all remains wretchedly tedious and talk is cheap.
Jill.
