Like the man said. If you're much under 40 you don't remember this moment and the chain of events leading to it. It's telling that John Dean's book is titled Worse Than Watergate: The Secret Presidency of George W. Bush.
Posted by phidipids at August 9, 2004 11:15 PMI miss the "dogged media". Now they're just lap dogs.
Posted by soccerdad at August 10, 2004 03:33 AMThe media of the 70s were NOT quick to decide that there was fire to go with the Watergate smoke. Hell, Woodward and Bernstein had trouble for a while convincing their editors to run some of the stuff.
Don't worry, the junkyard dog media will be back in full force next January, when a Democrat takes over.
Posted by Matt Davis at August 10, 2004 05:13 AMYes and No. The contexts share some similarities but the differences are significant. Not only do we have a "different" media--the 2004 version is more consolidated and corporate, and therefore more conservative--but also let us not forget that the Dems were in control of Congress. Control of the House and a split Senate allowed Dubya to push through his radical gifts to the rich and 9/11 gave Bush the opportunity to pursue the neocon's ill-considered ambitions as well as to increase his Congressional advantage. While the more conservative media is dismaying at times, GOP control of Congress is the main reason why impeachment hearings are not being held.
Posted by Bragan at August 10, 2004 09:30 AMWhat I can't figure out is how folks think we should reelect George Bush -- we're only going to have all that expense impeaching him.
