Comments: Failing Grades

Tell him to go to the Dean and demand a diploma if they won't offer courses for him to get it. That's ridiculous, to put it politiely.

Republicans have trashed this state into Mississippis funding levels for education. It's one of the dumbest things I've ever seen or lived through. I hope they're happy--they rest of us are royally screwed.

...Dark Ages here we come!

Pessimist, good points. Sadly you are only scratching at the surface. I've been hearing a lot from the LA education trenches and it is truly scary. In the high schools in South Central there are more cosmetology classes than chemistry. A lot of students are steered into cosmetology even though failing to take chemistry makes them ineligible for the UC (and possibly Cal State too) system. And of course there are nowhere near enough guidance counselors so kids may not find out until they are seniors that they have been screwed. The information about what they need to do to get into college is just not made available (and yes people are trying to change this, but it's a tough fight). In East LA there are schools where there are more military recruiters than guidance counselors. Worse, the guidance counselors are not allowed to go into classrooms and talk to the kids about what they need to do to get into college, but the military recruiters are allowed to do presentations about how glamorous a military career is.

There are grassroots groups in these communities that are trying to make things better, but the barriers to change are enormous. In the rich schools they are arguing over how many pupils per computer they should have, in the poor schools it is a fight to get functioning (let alone clean) bathrooms and buildings that aren't falling apart. The rich/poor divide is truly stark and depressing.

This is intolerable. If the class has not made you or your son should talk to the departmental Dean or Chair and make it readily apparent that some agreement must be reached regarding alternate credit for the course...THIS SEMESTER. If the dean is not amenable, your son should stay in the chain-of-command and take it to the VP for student affairs if an undergraduate, or the Graduate Dean if a graduate student. The school President is the last in the chain. If no compromise has been reached, you may want to have your attorney question the school as to the availability of the class, alluding to the possibility of seeking restitution for personal injury resulting from the years of lost income.

If this situation is not resolved, post again. I've got a buddy connected with the regents who would probably love to stuff a big summa cum laude in the respective deans' keister.

Briefly without elaborating to another few topics related to your topic. I won't even start on how the outdated univ system has ruined this country and hemorrhaged it with all the social enginering, paper professionals, attorneys, and funny moneys instead of genuine investments.

Ah, but most to all of you have done anything to get the illegals out and ensure only those who have been citizens for x no. of years get any govt. benefits.

Alex - I cannot understand what you've written. Maybe if you have time to re-write it, it might be possible to figure out your point.
